Home to vast deserts, mammoth glaciers, skyscraping mountains, and enchanting cities, Argentina and Chile should top every traveler’s to-do list. This adventure combines the very best of both, blending outdoor adventure with urban delights and a host of stylish twists.

It all starts in Buenos Aires with a private tour of the stunning neoclassical and monumentalist architecture that has earned the city its nickname: “the Paris of South America.” After some time to explore the Argentinian capital on your own, you’ll witness BA’s most famous cultural export first-hand with a sizzling tango performance over dinner at Rojo Tango.

From the capital, head west to Mendoza, the laidback hub of Argentina’s wine country. Here, you’ll get familiar with the region’s top Malbecs on a private tasting tour of three of the region’s esteemed wineries: Bodega Catena Zapata, Bodega Ruca Malen, and Achaval-Ferrer. With its picturesque scenery and relaxed atmosphere, the Mendoza Valley is ideal for relaxation, so be sure to make the most of it!

Next, we head south to El Calafate, land of rambling estancias and gateway to Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, domain of the mighty Perito Moreno Glacier. From a magnificent Patagonian lodge, head out for a full-day private encounter with the UNESCO-protected ice giant.

You’ll get the full Patagonia experience across the border in Chile where, from an isolated lodge at the edge of Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, you’ll trek to the scenic Mirador Cuernos outlook, marvel at the Paine Massif, and explore Laguna Azul. (The lodge itself offers a variety of excursions from birdwatching tours to horseback rides to sailing, too.) ... Show More »

The adventure continues back up north in Santiago, the Chilean capital. The city’s fascinating history is revealed on a private architectural walking tour where an expert guide will point out the diverse array of styles. Later, you’ll have the chance to sample Santiago’s full flavor on a private tasting tour of the bustling markets, restaurants, and pastry shops that are reshaping the city’s culinary heritage.

The tour ends on a grand note in San Pedro de Atacama, a rustic oasis on the lip of the Atacama Desert. From a remote lodge, you’ll explore the incredible landscapes on tours of the Valley of the Moon and the Atacama Salt Flat, hike the geothermal landscapes of El Tatio, and study the stars as they swirl across the vast night sky.

Day 2: Buenos Aires

Architecturally speaking, Buenos Aires is one of the most fascinating cities in Latin America. Meet your private guide and transportation at your hotel for an exciting and educational journey, allowing you to get a glimpse of the city’s rich history through its buildings. You’ll begin at Plaza de Mayo, where you’ll observe the most conspicuous of Buenos Aires’ Colonial buildings: the Cabildo, a primitive town hall. Admire the neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace, known as the Pink House, with its peculiar asymmetrical façade. Finally, we trace the tracks of Monumentalism, a school so dear to Fascism, visible in the Ministry of Economics building. Next you’ll walk across Avenida de Mayo to see the monumental Barolo Palace and Congress. You will then head for Puerto Madero, a cutting-edge urban renovation project initiated in 1991, where you will focus on an area known as ‘Little Manhattan’, which concentrates a handful of state-of-the-art, intelligent buildings created by the greatest Argentine architects, such as César Pelli and Mario Roberto Álvarez. Next, enjoy a guided tour of Teatro Colon, an incredible opera house that is considered to be one of the best venues in the world, then make your way to Plaza San Martin, location of South America’s first skyscraper. Continue to Recoleta, featuring the great Recoleta Cemetery, and a Colonial church built in 1732.

This evening, you may opt to dine at internationally renowned chef Francis Mallmann's Restaurante Patagonia Sur, where regionally inspired dishes, with a focus on quality Argentine beef, will dazzle your palate. Reservations will be required well in advance, and your meal and transportation is not included.

You can even rent a bike and enjoy the sites and sounds of BA at your leisure, from the zoo to the rose garden, it's yours to discover. Bodega Catena Zapata is widely recognized for its revolutionary owner and wine-maker Nicolás Catena. Argentina produces world-class wines, thanks to the Malbec grape in general and the wines of Nicolás Catena in particular.

Continue on a private visit to Bodega Ruca Malen, exclusively focused on making wines of excellence, based on their knowledge and above all, their passion for winemaking. The bodega visit will take you through the vineyards and sorting machines to the fermentation and aging rooms, offering an intimate glimpse into the wine making process from grape to bottle.

Achaval-Ferrer is a collection of old vineyards in beautiful places. They are committed to the production of wines that are expressive of their territory. They are a small winery because this is the key to top quality. Low yields allow the vineyards to express their personality in the grapes. Low intervention winemaking allows the grapes to fully express their vineyard in the bottle. Each of their wines is a different expression of Malbec.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at either Ruca Malen or Ruca Malen Winery, the choice is yours.

Day 15: Santiago

This morning, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Tradition and Modernity: a journey through a city in constant change. This tour is intended to supply a very complete overview of the urban history of the city of Santiago, as well as some of its most important architectural landmarks, both historical buildings (Museo de Bellas Artes, Cerro Santa Lucia, Central Market, Mapocho) as well as spectacular contemporary constructions (Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, MAVI). You will walkabout around heritage neighborhoods and sensitive interventions of recent architecture, which account for a perfect union between tradition and modernity in a city that is in full swing. Make a stop by the former National Congress and continue thereafter to the foundation heart of Santiago represented by its Main Square, and the significant historic buildings that make up the edges. The tour ends at the Civic Center of the city, with the accumulated history of Palacio de la Moneda. At the end of the tour, return to your hotel.

This evening, consider dining at Bocanariz, found a short walk away from your hotel. Located in the heart of the trendy Lastarria district, this elegant resto-bar is not a destination for only a meal, but also for exceptional Chilean wine experiences. Unlike traditional restaurants, at Bocanariz the menu has been elaborately designed so that the food compliments the wine, and not the other way around. With over 200 varietals on-hand and a wait staff comprised fully of trained sommeliers, your taste buds will be dancing by the end of the evening. Many can be sampled by the glass, or you can try a themed flight and see if your palate can tease out delicate notes such as smoky, spiced, citrus, herbed or sweet. You won’t find a better wine list in all of Chile!

Day 16: Santiago

Today you will experience a gastronomic tour like few others as you taste your way through Santiago on this informative, scenic and above all, delicious city tour. As this outing includes quite a few tastings, a light breakfast is recommended in the morning.

After being picked up by your guide and driver, you will make your way to La Vega Central Food Market to take in the sights and sounds of this bustling marketplace which offers some of the best and freshest produce that the fertile lands of Chile have to offer. Your next stop is the Mercado Central, a historic and sprawling square in the heart of downtown Santiago that offers a dizzying array products from the Pacific, first opened in 1872. After touring Mercado you will make a quick stop to enjoy a traditional Chilean empanada at a local favorite.

Following your time in the square, carry on to downtown Santiago and Cerro Santa Lucia, an iconic landmark dating back to the 1540’s and also stroll through the Plaza de Armas, a common meeting place for locals and tourists alike. Here you will also find the Santiago Central Post Office, the National History Museum, and Santiago City Hall. Carrying onward, you will visit the presidential palace of La Moneda, originally a colonial mint opened in 1805, which now serves as the offices for select Chilean officials.

By this time, you will have earned a fresh appetite and to satisfy this you will travel to the Providencia neighborhood. Here, you will stop for lunch at a traditional Chilean restaurant which will feature a Pisco Sour, Vaina cocktail or soft drink, a flavorful menu of options to suit every taste and preference, and a glass of fine Chilean wine.

After lunch, visit the up-and-coming district of Barrio Italia. Newly refashioned, this trendy neighborhood is home to a number of boutique shops, antique stores, art galleries and, a few blocks down, mouth-watering desserts! Your final tasting on this tour of Santiago is at a traditional Dulcería that offers a range of Chilean pastries. After enjoying a sweet treat to cap off your tour of this beautiful city, you will be returned to your hotel.

Accommodation: Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa

Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa is the only lodge in the San Pedro region that is totally enveloped by natural surroundings. Located in the lush Catarpe Valley of the Salt Mountain Range, just over a mile from the plaza of San Pedro, the Alto Atacama’s design was influenced by local village architecture and conceived to blend seamlessly into its environment and appear as a part of the terracotta-colored ridge that rises behind it. The setting, the sweeping views, the tranquility and silence, and the hotel’s wonderful outdoor lounge spaces make the Alto Atacama a destination unto itself, and unlike any other hotel property in the region. Environmental sustainability and a strong connection with the local culture have put the Alto Atacama in a category of its own, as has its “Andescape” concept of decorative flora and stable of friendly llamas and alpacas, local cuisine, and Leave No Trace-schooled guides.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
