Day 2: Buenos Aires

Architecturally speaking, Buenos Aires is one of the most fascinating cities in Latin America. Meet your private guide and transportation at your hotel for an exciting and educational journey, allowing you to get a glimpse of the city’s rich history through its buildings. You’ll begin at Plaza de Mayo, where you’ll observe the most conspicuous of Buenos Aires’ Colonial buildings: the Cabildo, a primitive town hall. Admire the neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace, known as the Pink House, with its peculiar asymmetrical façade. Finally, we trace the tracks of Monumentalism, a school so dear to Fascism, visible in the Ministry of Economics building. Next you’ll walk across Avenida de Mayo to see the monumental Barolo Palace and Congress. You will then head for Puerto Madero, a cutting-edge urban renovation project initiated in 1991, where you will focus on an area known as ‘Little Manhattan’, which concentrates a handful of state-of-the-art, intelligent buildings created by the greatest Argentine architects, such as César Pelli and Mario Roberto Álvarez. Next, enjoy a guided tour of Teatro Colon, an incredible opera house that is considered to be one of the best venues in the world, then make your way to Plaza San Martin, location of South America’s first skyscraper. Continue to Recoleta, featuring the great Recoleta Cemetery, and a Colonial church built in 1732.

Established in the historical district of Buenos Aires back in 1867, La Cava is an exclusive wine club located at the El Querandi Restaurant. Meet your private driver for a transfer to La Cava, its wine cellar housed in a carefully restored antique mansion. The wine list features exclusive labels, traditional products from small vineyards, signature wines, and other rare wines not normally found on the market. A selection of three Malbec wines from three different regions have been selected for your tasting enjoyment today, and you’ll experience these in the presence of a sommelier. A return transfer to your hotel will round out the activity.

Founded by Mr. Aldo Mazzoni more than 30 years ago, the Primuseum is an iconic restaurant, music venue and museum hybrid that features some 3,000 antiques. Inspired by the memory of his grandmother cooking with a Primus stove, Mr. Mazzoni unconsciously began forming the foundations of the Primuseum while a young adult, bringing his concept to fruition after years of planning. To this day, Mr. Mazzoni’s passion for antiques is evident; the cleanliness of each item exhibited in the museum is outstanding, which is hardly a surprise as each item is personally cared for by Mr. Mazzoni. At night, locals and visitors alike flock to enjoy a live entertainment complemented by the gastronomic offerings available, relishing the warm and cozy atmosphere, made even better by evening performances of either tango, milonga (a group tango), or candombe (a UNESCO recognized heritage dance created and popularized by Afro-Uruguayan slaves in centuries past). Tonight, discover the Primuseum for yourself, enjoying a three-course dinner paired with wine (included), all while taking in the evening's performance. At the end of the night, your driver and guide will transfer you back to your hotel.

Day 5: Montevideo

La Ciudad Vieja, or Old City, is – as the name suggests – the foundational neighborhood of Montevideo. After undergoing years of renovation, the area has been transformed from an abandoned, dilapidated barrio into the city’s go-to location for lively entertainment in the evening and is also host to Mercado del Puerto, a popular and sprawling marketplace where you’ll find some of the best and freshest Uruguayan food and beverages in the country. Originally a walled port, the fortifications of Montevideo were torn down in 1829, however, the Gateway of the Citadel is still standing near Plaza Independencia. In Plaza Independencia, Montevideo’s most historic park, you’ll discover the historic Solis Theatre as well as the impressive Palacio Salvo. After exploring the historic center of Montevideo, take the time to enjoy a fantastic lunch at Mercado del Puerto (included) and then sit back and relax as you are returned to your accommodations.

Day 6: Montevideo - Carmelo

Colonia del Sacramento is one of Uruguay’s oldest and most visually-striking cities. It’s historic center – declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 – is lined with colonial-era buildings constructed during Portuguese reign, all found along beautiful cobblestone streets that were designed to suit the natural contours of the landscape, giving the district a unique character. Intense warfare between Spain and Portugal throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries cast a pall over the region as both Crowns ceaselessly vied to dominate the region. Despite the constant battles, the historic center was spared. On this privately guided tour, discover the history – both new and old – of Colonia del Sacramento as you casually saunter through the city, passing landmarks including Calle de los Suspiros (or the Street of Sighs), the Holy Sacrament Church – consecrated in 1680 – the Lighthouse, and a trio of museums that focus on Spanish and Portuguese rule, respectively, and a third that hosts a vibrant range of tiles that have been regionally produced through the centuries. During the tour, you’ll break for a replenishing lunch in the historic quarter when the time is right, then stroll along the shores of the River Plate where an impressive boardwalk offers the perfect opportunity to snap gorgeous sea-side photos. After a day exploring Colonia del Sacramento, you will then carry onward to your hotel in Carmelo.

Accommodation: Narbona Wine Lodge Boutique Hotel

Narbona Wine Lodge Boutique Hotel offers five exclusive rooms where its detailed originality shows an antique decoration with modern equipment, reaching the welfare and joy of those who stay in. Distributed in three rooms overlooking the winery and two rooms overlooking the vineyards. Stylish shelter combining comfort, amusement, fields and vineyards, ensuring peace and rest in plenitude. Your vineyard escape is guided by a wine expert from the Wine House who will lead the way through the premises, opening the doors to the wine making temple, explaining the distinct phases of wine making and wrapping up the experience in the main room where a wine tasting and lunch will be offered. Day 10: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires boasts several magnificent and unique neighborhoods, but San Telmo and La Boca - as many travelers will tell you - should occupy one of the top spots. Today, San Telmo is without question one of the trendiest quarters of the city thanks to its cool, bohemian atmosphere and famed antique shops. Plaza Dorrego is the place to be on Sundays to find anything from antiques, memorabilia, second-hand clothes to dusty magazines during its traditional Antiques Fair. From San Telmo your private guide and driver will take you across to La Boca, arguably one of the most authentic neighborhoods. Its history was largely shaped by immigrants who, similarly to what happened in New York City’s Lower East Side, established themselves here at this gritty port-side barrio when they arrived in Buenos Aires. A working-class district, it has jealously guarded its identity, of which soccer and tango are major ingredients. What will strike you immediately is the peculiar architecture, especially along Caminito Street which in 1959 was declared an outdoor museum. It is the work of one of Argentina’s most famous painters and neighborhood philanthropists, Quinquela Martín. He gathered neighbors to paint the houses, made out of tin and scrap metal, in bright colors, emulating the early immigrants. The most recognizable icon, though, is La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box), right in the heart of the area and home of the Boca Juniors, the country’s largest soccer club

Enjoy the day with the comfort of a late hotel check-out, before departing on your late night flight.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
