European-inspired architecture, flavorful wines, and stylish retreats meet intoxicating tango rhythms, balmy climes, and raw nature at the mouth of the Río de la Plata. From Buenos Aires’ sultry allure to bustling Montevideo and the calm embrace of nature in Punta del Este, this experience blends the very best of Argentina’s biggest city with Uruguay’s under-explored gems.

We begin in Buenos Aires, the grand Argentinian capital. After getting settled, head out with a private guide to explore this most European of Latin American cities on a tour that introduces you to stunning examples of early 20th-century architecture in the upscale Palermo and Recoleta neighborhoods, as well as Recoleta Cemetery, final resting place of Argentina’s political and cultural elite, en route to the fabled Teatro Colón, one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses. Later, step outside the city and back in time to BA’s golden age on a tour of a private estancia, then return downtown to explore the chic San Telmo and La Boca districts before taking in a tango show over dinner at the famous Café de los Angelitos.

Across the Río de la Plata lies your next stop: Montevideo. With the help of a private guide, you’ll explore the Uruguayan capital’s magnificently restored Ciudad Vieja (“Old City”) and the impressive Plaza Independencia before enjoying a delicious lunch at Mercado del Puerto. Uruguay’s emerging wine scene takes center-stage later on a private visit to Juanico Winery, the country’s finest vineyard, where you’ll be treated to a tour of the grounds and cellar before partaking in an exclusive wine-tasting over lunch. ... Show More »

The tour draws to a close in the exclusive resort town of Punta del Este. Best known as the preferred escape for Buenos Aires’ elite, your time here begins with a nature-themed excursion to Cabo Polonio, a secluded wilderness that’s home to sea lions, pristine beaches, and remote islands. There’ll be plenty of time to take advantage of your relaxed surroundings later on a free day in Punta del Este, with which you can explore the coastal town, browse the market stalls, or simply unwind on the beach before returning to Montevideo and home.

Tonight, consider Tegui, Aramburu, Chila, Ociedo or Casa Cavia. From traditional to modern Argentine cuisine to eclectic international, these restaurants offer a wide range of sensational dishes that are sure to impress. Day 2: Buenos Aires

Most visitors to Buenos Aires are struck by the fact that it has the chic and glamour of a European city, with Paris coming to mind many times. Nowhere is this more palpable than in Palermo and Recoleta, the latter considered to be the perhaps most affluent neighborhood of the city. To understand why, a brief dip into history is required. In the early 20th century, Argentina experienced unprecedented prosperity. Local aristocrats dreamed of competing with Paris, then the cultural center of the world, and decided to display their wealth through the city’s architecture, imitating the splendor of the French capital. See for yourself, after your private guide and driver have collected you from your hotel and start the day at the splendid Plaza San Martin, right in the heart of Buenos Aires. Designed by French landscape architect Carlos Thays, it is surrounded by some of Buenos Aires’ most impressive public buildings. It is easy to imagine the life of the wealthier classes at that time as you are driving along Alvear Avenue, a sort of smaller-scale Champs Elysées up to Recoleta cemetery where generations of the Argentine elite have been buried, including Eva ‘Evita’ Peron. From here you continue your city discovery north to Palermo, lined with colonial mansions and dotted with cafés, restaurants and boutiques and further divided into trendy, creative, chic and cool areas called Palermo Soho, Palermo Hollywood and Palermo Viejo. Your tour concludes driving down the Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest boulevards in the world. On the way your private guide will take you on a tour of the 19th century Teatro Colón. A magnificent building with acoustics that rate it among the top five in the world and an opportunity to marvel at its lavish interior.

Day 3: Buenos Aires

It’s not easy to leave the cosmopolitan flair, architecture, history and night-life of Buenos Aires. But only 60 miles away, you can experience another important aspect of Argentina: a day visit to a real estancia. On this small shared tour, you can play polo, go horseback riding, or simply enjoy a day out in the warmth and comfort of the estancia, not far from the city, yet in the middle of the pampas. It’s a terrific way to spend a day outdoors and enjoy an authentic Argentine barbecue. Following a hotel pick up around 10:00 am and transfer to the estancia, welcome drinks with empanadas will be waiting for you when you arrive at approximately 12:30 pm. An hour or so later, feast on an asado lunch, which is a selection of meat cuts prepared in the traditional Argentinean way and accompanied by a wide choice of salads and potato dishes, as well as alcoholic & nonalcoholic beverages. After lunch, just relaxing under the shade of the trees or in one of the sun lounges by the pool – there’s a towel service and pool bar – might pass the time wonderfully, but you can also go cycling and there are horses for all levels if you wish to go for a ride. A traditional English tea with cakes and scones is served around 5:00 pm, and we will take you back to your hotel around 6:00 pm. Please note: Although you will be privately transferred to and from the estancia alongside an English-speaking guide and professional driver, activities at the estancia may be shared with other guests.

Day 4: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires boasts several magnificent and unique neighborhoods, but San Telmo and La Boca - as many travelers will tell you - should occupy one of the top spots. Today, San Telmo is without question one of the trendiest quarters of the city thanks to its cool, bohemian atmosphere and famed antique shops. Plaza Dorrego is the place to be on Sundays to find anything from antiques, memorabilia, second-hand clothes to dusty magazines during its traditional Antiques Fair. From San Telmo your private guide and driver will take you across to La Boca, arguably one of the most authentic neighborhoods. Its history was largely shaped by immigrants who, similarly to what happened in New York City’s Lower East Side, established themselves here at this gritty port-side barrio when they arrived in Buenos Aires. A working-class district, it has jealously guarded its identity, of which soccer and tango are major ingredients. What will strike you immediately is the peculiar architecture, especially along Caminito Street which in 1959 was declared an outdoor museum. It is the work of one of Argentina’s most famous painters and neighborhood philanthropists, Quinquela Martín. He gathered neighbors to paint the houses, made out of tin and scrap metal, in bright colors, emulating the early immigrants. The most recognizable icon, though, is La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box), right in the heart of the area and home of the Boca Juniors, the country’s largest soccer club

Buenos Aires may well be the best place in the world to catch an exclusive tango show, and the nightly performance at Café de Los Angelitos may well be the best in the city. This evening, enjoy a special night out as you are picked up from your hotel by a private driver and a bilingual guide, then set out to Café de Los Angelitos. After settling at your table, take in an intimate tango performance led by local dancers, all while enjoying a gourmet dinner consisting of grilled local meats, international dishes and excellent Argentinian wines. A sensory experience capturing the essence of Buenos Aires tango and gastro-culture, it is a night you’ll remember for some time.

Day 5: Buenos Aires - Montevideo

After meeting your driver in the hotel lobby, you will be privately transferred to the Pier in the Puerto Madero barrio of Buenos Aires to board the ferry to Montevideo, Uruguay. Once on board, relax as you cross the massive Rio de la Plata aboard the Buquebus Ferry, taking in the marvelous views along the way. Upon arrival, you will be met by a private driver and an English-speaking guide who will direct you to your awaiting vehicle and begin an in-depth tour of Montevideo. Modern and refined, the capital of Uruguay is often described as a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life. During this private guided tour, you will visit Ciudad Vieja, the colonial remnants of centuries past, where you’ll walk down cobbled roads to reach Teatro Solis, Uruguay’s most famous. You’ll also tour through the impressive Mercado del Puerto (or Port Market), lined with mouth-watering restaurants which serve scrumptious meals that feature grilled meats prominently. Discover Plaza Independencia (Independence Square), a wide, tree-lined square which divides the old city from the modern downtown. Here you’ll see the monument and mausoleum dedicated to Jose Artigas, one of nations most famed sons who is often described as “the father of Uruguayan nationhood” as well as Palacio Salvo. In the city center you’ll pass by excellent examples of grand neoclassical architecture en route to Centenary Park, a massive green space featuring a monumental obelisk. Toward the end of your experience, you will visit the upmarket districts of Punta Carretas and Pocitos to peruse the many shops, avenues and cafes in the area. After a few hours spent discovering beautiful Montevideo, you will be delivered to your hotel.

Accommodation: Hyatt Centric

Experience Montevideo to the fullest, with stunning views of the waterfront and beautiful walking trails just steps from Hyatt Centric Montevideo. The hotel boasts an ideal location in the charming Pocitos neighborhood, with revered restaurants, historic structures, and an endless promenade to explore. Day 6: Montevideo

Juanico Winery is one of Uruguay’s finest vineyards, and it just so happens to be the country’s largest. Nestled in the bucolic Uruguayan countryside, the winery was built sometime around 1830 and in subsequent years was modernized while retaining its original charm and character. The result is an outstanding winery where the latest technologies work in harmony with time-honored traditions to produce some of the country’s most celebrated wines. On this private-guided tour, walk through a selection of the vineyard, explore the winery, its antique structure and underground cellar. Toward the end of the experience, settle in for an exclusive wine tasting experience as well as a delicious, fresh-prepared lunch. Following your meal, you will be returned to your hotel in Montevideo.

A spectacular sea-side city, a day at leisure to explore this unique metropolis at your own pace is highly recommended. Host to the world’s longest continuous sidewalk, the Rambla of Montevideo stretches nearly 14 miles, running along the coast of the city. Offering outstanding views, it is a joy to simply wander along the promenade, though kite-flying, roller skating, sun-bathing or relaxing under the sun with a cup of mate are popular alternatives. While in Montevideo, be sure to visit a restaurant or cantina to enjoy a glass of tannat. Popularized in south western France, the fruit has since been adopted as the “national grape” of the country, and Uruguayan tannat is rightfully considered to be among the best in the world. In the old city, or Ciudad Vieja, be sure to visit a few iconic buildings and locations. Here you can find Solis Theatre, the country’s oldest, founded in 1856, as well as Palacia Salvo, which is likely the city’s most remarkable building. Designed by architect Mario Palanti and completed in 1925, this monumental structure is reminiscent of Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires, which Mr. Palanti also designed. Finally, be sure to tour through Plaza de la Constitucion. The site of critical debates and protests during the early years of Uruguayan independence, it is the most important city square in the country. Whatever you choose to do, Montevideo is all but certain to delight.

Day 7: Montevideo

Colonia del Sacramento is one of Uruguay’s oldest and most visually-striking cities. It’s historic center – declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 – is lined with colonial-era buildings constructed during Portuguese reign, all found along beautiful cobblestone streets that were designed to suit the natural contours of the landscape, giving the district a unique character. Intense warfare between Spain and Portugal throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries cast a pall over the region as both Crowns ceaselessly vied to dominate the region. Despite the constant battles, the historic center was spared. On this private guided walking tour, discover the history – both new and old – of Colonia del Sacramento as you casually saunter through the city, passing landmarks including Calle de los Suspiros (or the Street of Sighs), the Holy Sacrament Church – consecrated in 1680 – the Lighthouse, and a trio of museums that focus on Spanish and Portuguese rule, respectively, and a third that hosts a vibrant range of tiles that have been regionally produced through the centuries. During the tour, you’ll break for a replenishing lunch in the historic quarter when the time is right, and then stroll along the shores of the River Plate where an impressive boardwalk offers the perfect opportunity to snap gorgeous sea-side photos. After a day exploring Colonia del Sacramento, you will be returned to your hotel in Montevideo.

Day 8: Montevideo - Punta Del Este

After being picked up from your hotel in Montevideo, your private driver will head east for approximately two hours to reach Punta del Este. Taking in coastal views along the way, your English-speaking guide will set the stage for the days adventure. Upon arrival to Punta del Este, visit the upscale neighborhoods of Beverly Hills, Cantagril and San Rafael, admiring the incredible landscapes, then visit La Barra del Maldonado, a popular and historic fishing town. With colorful houses and pristine beaches, this is one of Punta del Este's must-see areas. Next, visit Playa Brava, located on the eastern side of the peninsula. See the beach’s famous 'Fingers' sculpture protruding from the sand and watch surfers out on the waves. Later you’ll head to the other side of the peninsula to see Playa Mansa, another beautiful beach. After enjoying the views in Playa Mansa, you will have free time for lunch (included) and then head to Casapueblo. This famous Mediterranean-style villa and art gallery is located right on the waters edge and was designed by Uruguayan painter and sculpture Carlos Páez Vilaró. Visit the museum and gallery inside the building and learn about the life of the famous artist and the history behind this incredible masterpiece. After a day exploring Punta del Este, you'll will be transferred to your hotel.

Day 9: Punta Del Este

Cabo Polonio is a special type of paradise. For nature lovers who seek quiet and calm, there are few places like it. Though this secluded region has seen a scattering of small homes pop-up in recent years – most completely ‘off-the-grid’ and without electricity or plumbing – this protected cape is still among the most pristine and least-visited in Uruguay. Strictly regulated, you’ll begin the day by meeting your private driver and English-speaking guide at your hotel, then make the transfer to the entrance of Cabo Polonio National Park where you will disembark and wait to board a 4x4 truck operated by the park system. After boarding the truck – a lumbering, hulking giant – with other visitors to the region, you and your guide will travel approximately four miles (six kilometers) to reach the beach. As the area is without electricity, the rhythm of the region and of its inhabitants is set by sunlight, while its geographic location – positioned opposite three small islands known as La Encantada, El Islote and La Rasa – provides the ideal conditions for certain creatures; as a result, a large colony of sea lions is permanently found here. With few restrictions regarding human interaction, this is an opportunity to see these playful animals up close. Often times, a pack of wolves can be seen roaming the countryside. Cold in the winter months and very hot in the summer, the ideal season to visit Cabo Polonio is in the spring when temperatures are more moderate. In the small town, handicrafts are available for purchase, however, it is the wide and warm beaches that make this area a must-visit during your time in Uruguay. As there are very few restaurants in the area, please consider bringing a snacks or sandwiches with you to ensure you can fully enjoy the experience. After a few hours exploring Cabo Polonio, join your guide for the return transfer to the entrance of the park where your vehicle and driver will be waiting to return you to your hotel.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America
