Day 2: Buenos Aires

Architecturally speaking, Buenos Aires is one of the most fascinating cities in Latin America. Meet your private guide and transportation at your hotel for an exciting and educational journey, allowing you to get a glimpse of the city’s rich history through its buildings. You’ll begin at Plaza de Mayo, where you’ll observe the most conspicuous of Buenos Aires’ Colonial buildings: the Cabildo, a primitive town hall. Admire the neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace, known as the Pink House, with its peculiar asymmetrical façade. Finally, we trace the tracks of Monumentalism, a school so dear to Fascism, visible in the Ministry of Economics building. Next you’ll walk across Avenida de Mayo to see the monumental Barolo Palace and Congress. You will then head for Puerto Madero, a cutting-edge urban renovation project initiated in 1991, where you will focus on an area known as ‘Little Manhattan’, which concentrates a handful of state-of-the-art, intelligent buildings created by the greatest Argentine architects, such as César Pelli and Mario Roberto Álvarez. Next, enjoy a guided tour of Teatro Colon, an incredible opera house that is considered to be one of the best venues in the world, then make your way to Plaza San Martin, location of South America’s first skyscraper. Continue to Recoleta, featuring the great Recoleta Cemetery, and a Colonial church built in 1732.

A city with too many outstanding restaurants to name - old, new and many hosting relics from the past that showcase Buenos Aires’ fascinating history - a night or two dining in Argentina’s political and culinary capital is highly recommended. Tonight, consider Tegui, Aramburu, Chila, Ociedo or Casa Cavia. From traditional to modern Argentine cuisine to eclectic international, these restaurants offer a wide range of sensational dishes that are sure to impress. Please speak to your Destination Expert for further information or recommendations.

Salta, a province tucked away in Argentina’s northwest, is known for its magnificent scenery of red rock valleys against a backdrop of Andean peaks, some excellent vineyards and, more recently, the lovely city of Salta itself. Brimming with colonial charm and, nowadays, offering new hotels, restaurants and shops, it can boast a thriving night life, especially within its delightful old city center. In other words, a great base from which to embark on a marvelous 236-mile (380-kilometer) round trip, revealing an endless array of stunning vistas. Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel around 7:30 am for an early departure, following the tracks of the “Train to the Clouds”, which weaves its way through the Andes at almost 14,000 feet (4,267 meters) above sea level. A true engineering marvel and the third highest train system in the world. Traveling along the spectacular Quebrada Del Toro (Bull’s River Gorge) is an unforgettable experience as the gorge’s mountain scenery, with its multi-colored rocks, constantly changes. On the way you pass the Ruins of Santa Rosa de Tastil, an ancient pre-Inca settlement until you reach the dusty mining town of San Antonio del Cobre, a typical highland settlement with adobe house and near-deserted streets. Bring out your sunglasses in time for your next stop, a genuine ‘wow’ moment: the salt plain of Salinas Grandes. The salt flats occupy an area of 131 square miles and on a clear day the blinding contrast between the dazzling blue sky and the cracked and crusty expanse of white is spellbinding. The opportunities to take creative pictures conjuring up all manner of optical illusions are striking. Your private guide will turn this into a truly exclusive experience by serving up a picnic lunch at the Salinas. After lunch you travel along the beautiful, winding Cuesta del Lipan towards the quaint village of Purmamarca, which sits right under the famous Cerro de los Sietes (Hill of Seven Colours), an almost otherworldly jagged formation of rocks, displaying a multitude of brilliant colors. Purmamarca itself is a splendid spot, with its postcard-pretty adobe houses, 17th century church and ancient trees. After this last stop on the journey, it’s back to Salta, arriving at approximately 7 pm.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
