The soaring peaks of the Andes hide a secret that, once discovered, you’ll want to keep all to your own. Stretching across the Chile-Argentina border, the Andean Lakes District is one of the most picturesque places in an already stunning part of the world. Combining eye-popping outdoor views with indoor comforts and urban delights, this breathtaking adventure simply must be experienced to be believed.

The tour starts in Santiago, Chile’s cosmopolitan capital, with an eye-opening discovery of the country’s captivating (and often brutal) Cold War history on a private tour of historic sites like Casa la Moneda, the notorious Londres 38 detention center, and local museums. But it’s not all gloom: later, you’ll hit the town on a private twilight tour of the city’s best nightspots and devote a full day to exploring seaside Valparaíso, Chile’s wine capital, on a private tour.

From the big city, the scene then shifts to the charming village of Puerto Varas on the shores of scenic Lago Llanquihue. Here, in the company of a private guide, you’ll embark on a light hike across Volcán Osorno to take in unbelievable views of Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales.

The experience continues 185 miles (300 kilometers) to the east in Bariloche, the ravishing Argentinian resort town perched on the lip of Lago Nahuel Huapi. Here among the beautiful Andean lakes, you’ll take a chairlift-assisted tour of the town via the Circuito Chico, a stunning route filled with scenic vantage points from which to take in the surroundings. ... Show More »

Last stop: beautiful Buenos Aires. Get introduced to the Argentinian capital in the best possible way during a fantastic night out at Café de los Angelitos, where you’ll take in a dazzling tango show over dinner. Later, head out into (and under) the narrow cobblestone streets of BA’s trendy San Telmo neighborhood on a privately guided city tour that treats you to the above-ground highlights and the subterranean wonders of the city’s underground labyrinths. Finally, learn first-hand how Buenos Aires comes by its “Paris of South America” nickname on a guided tour of the Argentine capital.

Day 1: Santiago

Welcome to Chile!

To ensure your comfort, an English-speaking guide will be waiting for you outside of Customs holding a sign with your name on it. This representative will direct you to your awaiting vehicle and driver, and accompany you to your hotel to assist with check-in.

Accommodation: Hotel Magnolia

This historic building was originally home to the influential Zegers family. Exposed brick, wooden panels, and sleek furniture now bring a modern feel to this historic property. Seamlessly fusing the city’s past and future, Hotel Magnolia offers luxe accommodations, a gourmet restaurant on-site, and an ideal location at the foot of Cerro Santa Lucia Park. Situated in the trendy neighborhood of Bellas Artes, guests are likely to stumble into toccata’s (intimate concert) and a walk to the adjacent neighborhood of Lastarria for dinner on European style cobblestone streets is highly recommended. Modern Junior Suites and Superior Rooms define Hotel Magnolia, and guests can also look forward to the lively bar-restaurant, La Cocina Magnolia, which offers gourmet Chilean dishes in an open and airy space, to relaxing with a book in the study and to enjoying a drink on the terrace. Draw back the curtain and enter the world of Chile’s most influential families during your stay at Hotel Magnolia.

Day 2: Santiago

During the Cold War years a dramatic political divide emerged in Chile that can still be felt today, and in Santiago in particular. On this private tour you’ll receive a thorough introduction to Chile’s recent political history, learning about the events that led the country to democratically elect a socialist president, Salvador Allende, and the tumult that soon after resulted in the ascension of a right wing dictatorship headed by army chief Augusto Pinochet. To start the day, your guide will lead the way to the Paris-Londres neighborhood where you’ll visit Londres 38. Originally the headquarters of Allende’s Socialist Party, it became an unofficial, off-the-books torture and detention center after the 1973 coup d'état that overthrew the socialist government. After touring through Londres 38, continue to La Mondea Palace, host to the three main cabinets of Chile’s government. You’ll then visit Barrio Yungay, an area that in 1835 became a symbol of the Chilean Victory in the Battle of Yungay, a decisive victory in Chilean history. Later, you’ll pay a visit to the Museum of Memory and Human Rights which originally served as an infamous detention camp through the first years of the Pinochet dictatorship. Now a place of remembrance, the museum dignifies victims of the regime and serves as a stark reminder of past horrors to future generations. After your visit, lunch will be served at Bocanariz, a vibrant wine bar with an excellent menu that's sure to please. Rounding out your day, tour La Chascona Museum, one of renowned poet Pablo Neruda’s famous houses located in Bellavista neighborhood, named after Matilde, the secret love of Neruda. An active member of the Communist Party, Neruda’s death was later linked to the coup of 1973, which you’ll learn about in detail during your tour. Following the visit to La Chascona Museum, you will be returned to your hotel in Santiago.

Santiago is far more than a gateway to Atacama, Patagonia or the Chilean wine region. Host to a range of vibrant bars and nightclubs, tonight you’ll head out in the company of a private guide and professional driver to experience the best of Santiago’s nightlife. Begin the evening with a visit to Krossbar – a sleek yet casual bar - where you’ll enjoy a beer tasting, a proper pint, and a light appetizer. Carrying onward, your next stop is to Jardin Mallinkrodt – an open-air bar featuring a garden theme – where you’ll have another refreshment paired with a cocktail dish and an entrée. Your final stop of the evening is to the chic and sophisticated Siete Negronis where you’ll cap of the night’s experience with two more cocktails; the Pisco Sour is highly recommended. After a night on the town, you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 11: Buenos Aires

Meet your professional driver and private guide at your hotel for a of Buenos Aires that features rare and ancient passages. The recently discovered tunnels of Buenos Aires are one of the city’s best kept secrets. Your tour will start at the Plaza de Mayo, the city’s founding site and birthplace of Buenos Aires’ urban development. Next is trendy San Telmo, a former enclave for the local aristocracy. Here, you’ll visit one of the recently unearthed subterranean tunnels that is part of a huge labyrinthine network that hides under the streets of San Telmo. A long corridor with vaulted ceilings and display cabinets exhibiting many items recovered during the excavation, you will also learn some of the many myths have been created around the tunnels: stories of secret encounters, disappearances, political conspiracies, even murder.

Other areas that are included in your tour include La Boca, a neighborhood strongly influenced by working class Italian immigrants. Characterized by make-shift houses built from scrap materials found in local shipyards and Puerto Madero. Buenos Aires’ latest and most sophisticated neighborhood, La Recoleta, is where you will enjoy a brief break to explore the gorgeous Plaza San Martín, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, and the celebrated Recoleta Cemetery. Some of the most important characters of Argentina’s political and cultural life are buried here, including Eva Peron. Day 12: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires boasts several magnificent and unique neighborhoods, but San Telmo and La Boca - as many travelers will tell you - should occupy one of the top spots. Today, San Telmo is without question one of the trendiest quarters of the city thanks to its cool, bohemian atmosphere and famed antique shops. Plaza Dorrego is the place to be on Sundays to find anything from antiques, memorabilia, second-hand clothes to dusty magazines during its traditional Antiques Fair. From San Telmo your private guide and driver will take you across to La Boca, arguably one of the most authentic neighborhoods. Its history was largely shaped by immigrants who, similarly to what happened in New York City’s Lower East Side, established themselves here at this gritty port-side barrio when they arrived in Buenos Aires. A working-class district, it has jealously guarded its identity, of which soccer and tango are major ingredients. What will strike you immediately is the peculiar architecture, especially along Caminito Street which in 1959 was declared an outdoor museum. It is the work of one of Argentina’s most famous painters and neighborhood philanthropists, Quinquela Martín. He gathered neighbors to paint the houses, made out of tin and scrap metal, in bright colors, emulating the early immigrants. The most recognizable icon, though, is La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box), right in the heart of the area and home of the Boca Juniors, the country’s largest soccer club

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.
