Book-ended with time to explore the vibrant South American capitals of Buenos Aires and Santiago, you’ll get your fill of frontier wildness with all the comforts of civilization, too.

It begins in Buenos Aires, the electric Argentinian capital, where you’ll step out on a tour of the narrow cobblestone streets of the San Telmo and La Boca barrios, take in a colorful tango show over dinner at Rojo Tango, and explore the city’s fascinating architecture.

From the capital, we next fly south to El Calafate, gateway to the wild lands of Patagonia. After a visit to the Glaciarium (a museum devoted to the world of ice), come face-to-face with Los Glaciares National Park’s magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier on a crampon-assisted hike.

Next, cross the border into bound for the Chilean frontier, your home base for the next few nights. Here, you’ll have the chance to hike across the Grey Glacier, hike and go horseback riding through the Sierra, and kayak the coast before returning northward to your last stop: Santiago.

A dynamic city that holds to its past while embracing the future, Santiago is the perfect spot to wrap up your South America tour. Develop an appreciation for the Chilean capital on a private historical tour of the city capped off with a visit to the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino, which offers an unparalleled glimpse into the life of the region’s indigenous peoples before their first encounter with Europeans. Day 2: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires boasts several magnificent and unique neighborhoods, but San Telmo and La Boca - as many travelers will tell you - should occupy one of the top spots. Today, San Telmo is without question one of the trendiest quarters of the city thanks to its cool, bohemian atmosphere and famed antique shops. Plaza Dorrego is the place to be on Sundays to find anything from antiques, memorabilia, second-hand clothes to dusty magazines during its traditional Antiques Fair. From San Telmo your private guide and driver will take you across to La Boca, arguably one of the most authentic neighborhoods. Its history was largely shaped by immigrants who, similarly to what happened in New York City’s Lower East Side, established themselves here at this gritty port-side barrio when they arrived in Buenos Aires. A working-class district, it has jealously guarded its identity, of which soccer and tango are major ingredients. What will strike you immediately is the peculiar architecture, especially along Caminito Street which in 1959 was declared an outdoor museum. It is the work of one of Argentina’s most famous painters and neighborhood philanthropists, Quinquela Martín. He gathered neighbors to paint the houses, made out of tin and scrap metal, in bright colors, emulating the early immigrants. The most recognizable icon, though, is La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box), right in the heart of the area and home of the Boca Juniors, the country’s largest soccer club

Day 3: Buenos Aires

During your day at leisure consider taking a riverboat to Tigre which lies on the Paraná Delta, English-style rowing clubs, countless marinas, humble dwellings and elegant mansions from the “Belle Époque”, such as the Tigre Club, are to be seen, as well as small pensions and upscale lodges, restaurants, tea-houses and simple picnic sites. If the outdoors are your passion, head out to a nearby "Estancia" where you can  enjoy a BBQ lunch or perhaps a traditional folklore show. Or spend the day in Uruguay visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Colonia del Sacramento. You can even rent a bike and enjoy the sites and sounds of BA at your leisure, from the zoo to the rose garden, it's yours to discover. If you are interested in art, tango, cooking or exploring the cafe culture of Buenos Aires, consider a themed private tour. Just ask your Destination Expert for more details in figuring out the most suitable options for you.

Buenos Aires may well be the best place in the world to catch an exclusive tango show, and the nightly performance at Café de Los Angelitos may well be the best in the city. This evening, enjoy a special night out as you are picked up from your hotel by a private driver and a bilingual guide, then set out to Café de Los Angelitos. After settling at your table, take in an intimate tango performance led by local dancers, all while enjoying a gourmet dinner consisting of grilled local meats, international dishes and excellent Argentinian wines. A sensory experience capturing the essence of Buenos Aires tango and gastro-culture, it is a night you’ll remember for some time.

Day 4: Buenos Aires

Most visitors to Buenos Aires are struck by the fact that it has the chic and glamour of a European city, with Paris coming to mind many times. Nowhere is this more palpable than in Palermo and Recoleta, the latter considered to be the perhaps most affluent neighborhood of the city. To understand why, a brief dip into history is required. In the early 20th century, Argentina experienced unprecedented prosperity. Local aristocrats dreamed of competing with Paris, then the cultural center of the world, and decided to display their wealth through the city’s architecture, imitating the splendor of the French capital. See for yourself, after your private guide and driver have collected you from your hotel and start the day at the splendid Plaza San Martin, right in the heart of Buenos Aires. Designed by French landscape architect Carlos Thays, it is surrounded by some of Buenos Aires’ most impressive public buildings. It is easy to imagine the life of the wealthier classes at that time as you are driving along Alvear Avenue, a sort of smaller-scale Champs Elysées up to Recoleta cemetery where generations of the Argentine elite have been buried, including Eva ‘Evita’ Peron. From here you continue your city discovery north to Palermo, lined with colonial mansions and dotted with cafés, restaurants and boutiques and further divided into trendy, creative, chic and cool areas called Palermo Soho, Palermo Hollywood and Palermo Viejo. Your tour concludes driving down the Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest boulevards in the world. On the way your private guide will take you on a tour of the 19th century Teatro Colón. A magnificent building with acoustics that rate it among the top five in the world and an opportunity to marvel at its lavish interior.

Day 5: Buenos Aires - El Calafate

A private airport transfer with a professional driver and English-speaking guide is included between your Buenos Aires hotels and domestic airport (or vice versa)

Fly from Buenos Aires domestic airport to El Calafate. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 15 minutes. Please note that flights are subject to change based on availability and are a separate purchase.

Enjoy a private airport transfer with a professional driver and English-speaking guide.

A great option on your day of arrival to the area before you’ve seen the ‘real thing’ at El Calafate as a visit to the Glaciarium is an informative and entertaining interactive multi-media show that introduces you to the fascinating world of the glaciers. Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the museum where you are going to be greeted by the immersing sound of ice-melting water, leading to a series of dioramas recreating the glaciers’ most characteristic features. Photos by some of Argentina’s finest nature photographers, such as Florian von der Flecht, Daniel Wagner and Andres Bonetti support the projections with extraordinary captivating images. The Southern Patagonian Ice field and all the Patagonian glaciers are represented, seen from every possible perspective, including a look at a glacier from an over-flight to the experience of actually being inside a glacier. Another unforgettable experience is GLACIOBAR, located in another part of the museum. Everything is made from ice, starting with the walls which are completely coated with pure glacier ice, as well as the bar, tables, and chairs. The room temperature is -0°C and you have 20 minutes to enjoy the facility’s two protagonists: ice and cold. Beverages, including Vodka, Whiskey, Tequila and Rum, are served in special creative ice glasses. After this frosty interlude, your private guide will transfer you back to your hotel.

Accommodation: Kosten Aike

Kosten Aike Hotel, situated in El Calafate, utilizes traditional ancestral Tehuelche designs, reflected in the aesthetic geometry that defines every corner of the hotel. After spending your day exploring the magnificent glaciers and national parks of Patagonia, returning to the comfort of spacious and welcoming rooms is the perfect reward. Day 6: El Calafate

Your private driver and guide will pick you up at the hotel lobby to take you on a full day guided excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier, one of Argentina's prime touristic attractions. The 19 mile (30 kilometer) long glacier, is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system shared with Chile, it is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water and one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are not retreating. You will travel about two hours to reach the Glaciers National Park and from the beginning, you will see this trip has pleasant surprises! Already in the outskirts of El Calafate, you can see the Argentine Lake with its Round Bay populated with an important variety of birds such as the black neck swan, flamencos, duck steams, gallaretas, the cauquén and coirones. You will enter about 26 km into the Glaciers National Park where you will observe the arboreal vegetation formed by ñires, sour cherries, and lengas. As well as some flowers of diverse colors like the outstanding “notro” with its intense red color. A large visitor center at the site features a walking circuit which allows views of different faces and the surface of the glacier. There is also a restaurant at the site if you feel like stopping and having some lunch (not included). Throughout the day your guide will explain the general features of the glacier and give specific details of Glacier Perito Moreno's flora and fauna, and its particular formation. After an amazing day in the outdoors, you will return to your hotel in El Calafate.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.
