Few places on earth can match Patagonia’s rugged natural beauty. This gripping adventure brings you deep into this fabled land of jagged peaks, massive glaciers, and endless skies. Bookended with time to explore the vibrant South American capitals of Buenos Aires and Santiago, you’ll get your fill of frontier wildness with all the comforts of civilization, too.

It begins in Buenos Aires, the electric Argentinian capital, where you’ll step out on a tour of the narrow cobblestone streets of the San Telmo and La Boca barrios, take in a colorful tango show over dinner at Rojo Tango, and explore the city’s fascinating architecture.

From the capital, we next fly south to El Calafate, gateway to the wild lands of Patagonia. After a visit to the Glaciarium (a museum devoted to the world of ice) and experiencing the wonders of rural life at Estancia Nibepo Aike, come face-to-face with Los Glaciares National Park’s magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier on a crampon-assisted hike.

Next, cross the border into bound for the Chilean frontier, your home base for the next few nights. Here, you’ll have the chance to hike across the Grey Glacier, hike and go horseback riding through the Sierra Dorotea, and kayak Los Pioneros Fjord before returning northward to your last stop: Santiago.

A dynamic city that holds to its past while embracing the future, Santiago is the perfect spot to wrap up your South America tour. First, tour the city’s gastronomic hotspots on a private tour of Mercado Central and other sites before lunch (and pisco sours) at a traditional Chilean restaurant and a visit to the trendy Barrio Italia neighborhood for pastries. Finally, develop an appreciation for the Chilean capital on a private historical tour of the city capped off with a visit to the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino, which offers an unparalleled glimpse into the life of the region’s indigenous peoples before their first encounter with Europeans. ... Day 2: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires boasts several magnificent and unique neighborhoods, but San Telmo and La Boca - as many travelers will tell you - should occupy one of the top spots. Today, San Telmo is without question one of the trendiest quarters of the city thanks to its cool, bohemian atmosphere and famed antique shops. Plaza Dorrego is the place to be on Sundays to find anything from antiques, memorabilia, second-hand clothes to dusty magazines during its traditional Antiques Fair. From San Telmo your private guide and driver will take you across to La Boca, arguably one of the most authentic neighborhoods. Its history was largely shaped by immigrants who, similarly to what happened in New York City’s Lower East Side, established themselves here at this gritty port-side barrio when they arrived in Buenos Aires. A working-class district, it has jealously guarded its identity, of which soccer and tango are major ingredients. What will strike you immediately is the peculiar architecture, especially along Caminito Street which in 1959 was declared an outdoor museum. It is the work of one of Argentina’s most famous painters and neighborhood philanthropists, Quinquela Martín. He gathered neighbors to paint the houses, made out of tin and scrap metal, in bright colors, emulating the early immigrants. The most recognizable icon, though, is La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box), right in the heart of the area and home of the Boca Juniors, the country’s largest soccer club

Get ready for a night of Tango like no other at Rojo Tango! You will be picked up at your hotel in a private vehicle by a professional driver and a bilingual tour guide. The show starts at 8.30pm at the Cabaret of the Faena Hotel + Universe. "Rojo Tango” is an invitation to live and feel the tango intensely. It is a sophisticated show that lets you experience the pleasure of the tango up to its most minimum details, its harmonic melodies, its rhythm and the feelings and colors coming to live in the dance. Witness a professional performance, offered to a small audience. Dancers wear unique costumes, including updated innovations in fabrics, embroideries and colors. The hairdos are of particular importance and match every detail of the costumes and dance. The special lighting enhances the dance's different nuances. A special dinner and drinks are included. You will be returned to your hotel after the show.

Day 3: Buenos Aires

“Paris of the South” is a reference that is often applied in conversation or writing when travelers talk about Buenos Aires. The city is characterized by a certain nostalgic, old-world beauty and once you see some of its architectural jewels, you know why this sobriquet is appropriate. On this tour, your private guide is going to introduce you to some of the city’s finest landmarks that represent its Belle Epoque era around elegant Recoleta and Retiro, with tree-lined sidewalks, turn-of-the-century palaces and handsome apartment buildings featured prominently. The sprawling Plaza San Martín, an important part of today’s exploration for example, is surrounded by several masterpieces such as the Beaux Arts Palace, originally built as a residence for the Anchorena family, an imposing mansion, partially, inspired by the Louvre. Putting this into perspective, in Argentina the name Anchorena evokes the wealth and power similar to the likes of Rockefeller and Morgan in the United States, Krupp in Germany or Rothschild in France and England. The building was acquired by the government and today houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then there is the Kavanagh Building, a ground-breaking Art Deco skyscraper that was at the time of its inauguration, in 1936, the tallest skyscraper in Latin America. Its construction was commissioned by Corina Kavanagh, a millionaire of Irish descent who sold two ranches at the age of 39 to finance her own skyscraper. Still in the same area, the Museum of Decorative Arts was the former home to Argentine aristocracy, the Errazuriz-Alvear family, an elegant piece of architecture, surrounded by sumptuous gardens and encircled by detailed, wrought iron railings. The list of splendid edifices you can see also includes Circulo Militar, designed in Paris and built in Buenos Aires for the Paz family who owned the La Prensa newspaper, the French Embassy, owned by the Ortiz Basualdo family until 1939 and the Brazilian Embassy, owned by the Pereda family until 1944. All of these large houses or mansions were known at the time by the surname of their owners because built between 1880 and 1930, when Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world, they transformed Buenos Aires into the most European of Latin American cities. Following the economic crisis in the 1930’s many of these buildings were difficult to maintain and their owners chose to sell them, which is why today they function as embassies, museums or hotels. By the end of your walk, you should have a pretty good grasp of the history that shaped the city’s urban development during its golden era of architecture and what these landmarks represent today. You can also enjoy a nice lunch at a selected nice restaurant in Recoleta. At the end of your excursion, your private guide will take you back to your hotel.

A city with too many outstanding restaurants to name - old, new and many hosting relics from the past that showcase Buenos Aires’ fascinating history - a night or two dining in Argentina’s political and culinary capital is highly recommended. Tonight, consider Tegui, Aramburu, Chila, Ociedo or Casa Cavia. From traditional to modern Argentine cuisine to eclectic international, these restaurants offer a wide range of sensational dishes that are sure to impress. Please speak to your Destination Expert for further information or recommendations.

Day 4: Buenos Aires - El Calafate

A private airport transfer with a professional driver and English-speaking guide is included between your Buenos Aires hotels and domestic airport (or vice versa)

Fly from Buenos Aires domestic airport to El Calafate. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 15 minutes. Please note that flights are subject to change based on availability and are a separate purchase.

Enjoy a private airport transfer with a professional driver and English-speaking guide.

A great option on your day of arrival to the area before you’ve seen the ‘real thing’ at El Calafate as a visit to the Glaciarium is an informative and entertaining interactive multi-media show that introduces you to the fascinating world of the glaciers. Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the museum where you are going to be greeted by the immersing sound of ice-melting water, leading to a series of dioramas recreating the glaciers’ most characteristic features. Photos by some of Argentina’s finest nature photographers, such as Florian von der Flecht, Daniel Wagner and Andres Bonetti support the projections with extraordinary captivating images. The Southern Patagonian Ice field and all the Patagonian glaciers are represented, seen from every possible perspective, including a look at a glacier from an over-flight to the experience of actually being inside a glacier. Another unforgettable experience is GLACIOBAR, located in another part of the museum. Everything is made from ice, starting with the walls which are completely coated with pure glacier ice, as well as the bar, tables, and chairs. The room temperature is -0°C and you have 20 minutes to enjoy the facility’s two protagonists: ice and cold. Beverages, including Vodka, Whiskey, Tequila and Rum, are served in special creative ice glasses. After this frosty interlude, your private guide will transfer you back to your hotel.

Accommodation: Kosten Aike

Kosten Aike Hotel, situated in El Calafate, utilizes traditional ancestral Tehuelche designs, reflected in the aesthetic geometry that defines every corner of the hotel. After spending your day exploring the magnificent glaciers and national parks of Patagonia, returning to the comfort of spacious and welcoming rooms is the perfect reward. Day 5: El Calafate

Depart from El Calafate early in the morning, around 9 am, and follow the old Estancias route that historically links Patagonian culture, its indigenous peoples, steppe and pioneers. It is not uncommon to see condors, foxes and hares and once you’ve crossed the Rio Rico, the landscape changes quite suddenly from steppe terrain to a mountainous scenery. You reach the estancia after a lovely drive along the edge of Lago Roca and entering Los Glaciares National Park where your host is waiting for you offering a warm welcome in the Quincho, the rustic dining room, with coffee, tea or mate and home-made cakes and pastries. It’s a perfect moment to relax and enjoy a magnificent view of the Andes mountain range. Nibepo Aike is a perfect example of a typical Patagonian estancia that was originally devoted to sheep rearing and nowadays has become the most prestigious Hereford cattle breeding ranch in the area while still retaining a small herd of sheep. Once you finished your coffee and pastries in the dining room it’s time to get ready for a fabulous long walk, discovering the diverse rocky outcrops eroded by glacial action and the changes in water level of the lake. Brilliant views of the southern arm of Lago Argentino are a constant as are the breathtakingly beautiful snow-capped mountains in the distance. You are bound to return to the estancia with big smiles. Afterwards, it’s time to go inside the shearing shed to understand the work of the shearing teams and observe the skilled hands during a sheep-shearing demonstration, accompanied by a very interesting commentary about wool sorting and wrapping. Weather permitting, there is also a demonstration of horse handling skills, to give you a full Patagonia gaucho experience. Returning to the Quincho – crossing the vegetable plot where most of the estancia’s fresh produce is grown - a whole lamb is being roasted on a vertical stake in traditional Patagonian fashion, but there is also red meat beef, sausages, fresh organic garden salads and home-made dessert. One glass of wine or soft drink per person is included. With the gorgeous views of the Andes all around you and fortified by a splendid Patagonian BBQ, it is time to return to your hotel in the late afternoon with wonderful memories for the drive.

Day 6: El Calafate

Your private driver and guide will pick you up at the hotel lobby to take you on a full day guided excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier, one of Argentina's prime touristic attractions. The 19 mile (30 kilometer) long glacier, is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system shared with Chile, it is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water and one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are not retreating. You will travel about two hours to reach the Glaciers National Park and from the beginning, you will see this trip has pleasant surprises! Already in the outskirts of El Calafate, you can see the Argentine Lake with its Round Bay populated with an important variety of birds such as the black neck swan, flamencos, duck steams, gallaretas, the cauquén and coirones. You will enter about 26 km into the Glaciers National Park where you will observe the arboreal vegetation formed by ñires, sour cherries, and lengas. As well as some flowers of diverse colors like the outstanding “notro” with its intense red color. A large visitor center at the site features a walking circuit which allows views of different faces and the surface of the glacier. There is also a restaurant at the site if you feel like stopping and having some lunch (not included). Throughout the day your guide will explain the general features of the glacier and give specific details of Glacier Perito Moreno's flora and fauna, and its particular formation. After an amazing day in the outdoors, you will return to your hotel in El Calafate.

Arriving at the south end of the channel of Ice floes, the boat maintains a reasonable distance from the wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Sailing along the glacier allows you to capture the spectacular calving’s as they happen! Boarding takes places at the dock located in the Bay “Under the Shade”, approximately four miles (seven kilometers) from the viewpoint of the glacier. This excursion has been added to your full day tour of the Perito Moreno Glacier. The boat is on a shared basis and will be done on your own (without private guide).

The hotel ambiance is Patagonian, radiating warmth, comfort and togetherness; all things desired by those who've spent their day in the Patagonian outdoors. The hotel sits on a bluff where the vast pampas meet Lake Sarmiento, and enjoys a magnificent view of Torres del Paine peaks on the other side of the lake. Much consideration and care was given so that Tierra Patagonia's architecture would complement the flow and geology of its gorgeous location. The essence of the interior decoration is authentically Patagonian, with hand-crafted furnishings and details using natural materials from the region and the highest quality workmanship. This property was named one of National Geographic’s Most Unique Lodges in the World.

Day 8: Torres del Paine

This world famous hike demands stamina, but the reward is well worth the effort -- on this guided, shared hike, you will enjoy some of the most impressive views of the three granite towers. The trek begins with a steep ascent for one hour along the Rio Ascensio until reaching the Paso de los Vientos. From here, it will take roughly 30 minutes to reach Campamento Chileno where you will break briefly. Soon, the walk continues to ascend through a lenga forest for one hour and 30 minutes, gaining altitude very quickly amid amazing views of the geological formations that the region is famed for. The last hour is the most challenging; the trail winds up thorough a moraine section of loose rock and there is exposure to the wind and the weather is highly unpredictable. Arriving at the lookout, you will enjoy the quintessential view of the Torres del Paine and, weather permitting, enjoy lunch with this fantastic landscape in front of you. Descending along the same trail you hiked earlier, for roughly four hours, you will reach the starting point of the trek. Make sure you dress properly: rain pants and a waterproof jacket, a hat, gloves, a fleece-lined (or warm) jacket, a synthetic and breathable top, light hiking pants, and hiking boots are all highly recommended. Avoid wearing cotton, jeans and new boots. This excursion is very strenuous and is not suggested for novice hikers.

From the stables at Cerro Guido, head west by horseback with the Torres del Paine always in sight on this guided group tour. Segunda Barranca is a part of an estancia which has a house, a “puesto” or stand for the gaucho, and a shearing shed where depending on the time of year there may be sheep shearing or marking taking place. Experienced riders can gallop on a gently sloping plain or head to the “bosquecito” viewpoint on the way to or from Segunda Barranca.

This afternoon, enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Embark on a scenic group trip which concentrates on the west side of the Torres del Paine National Park. It is the best option to see a large part of the park in just one day, with several stops arranged to maximize your opportunity to see all that this impressive region has to offer. The journey finishes in the area of Lake Grey, where there are glaciers, ice floes and feathery nothofagus woods. If you are lucky, your group could see a huemul, a native deer in danger of extinction. Walk for roughly 30 minutes on the shore of Grey Lake and explore ice floes from the glacier that have become beached. The return journey to the hotel is on the south side of Lago del Toro.

Day 12: Santiago

Today you will experience a gastronomic tour like few others as you taste your way through Santiago on this informative, scenic and above all, delicious city tour. As this outing includes quite a few tastings, a light breakfast is recommended in the morning.

After being picked up by your guide and driver, you will make your way to La Vega Central Food Market to take in the sights and sounds of this bustling marketplace which offers some of the best and freshest produce that the fertile lands of Chile have to offer. Your next stop is the Mercado Central, a historic and sprawling square in the heart of downtown Santiago that offers a dizzying array products from the Pacific, first opened in 1872. After touring Mercado you will make a quick stop to enjoy a traditional Chilean empanada at a local favorite.

Following your time in the square, carry on to downtown Santiago and Cerro Santa Lucia, an iconic landmark dating back to the 1540’s and also stroll through the Plaza de Armas, a common meeting place for locals and tourists alike. Here you will also find the Santiago Central Post Office, the National History Museum, and Santiago City Hall. Carrying onward, you will visit the presidential palace of La Moneda, originally a colonial mint opened in 1805, which now serves as the offices for select Chilean officials.

By this time, you will have earned a fresh appetite and to satisfy this you will travel to the Providencia neighborhood. Here, you will stop for lunch at a traditional Chilean restaurant which will feature a Pisco Sour, Vaina cocktail or soft drink, a flavorful menu of options to suit every taste and preference, and a glass of fine Chilean wine.

After lunch, visit the up-and-coming district of Barrio Italia. Newly refashioned, this trendy neighborhood is home to a number of boutique shops, antique stores, art galleries and, a few blocks down, mouth-watering desserts! Your final tasting on this tour of Santiago is at a traditional Dulcería that offers a range of Chilean pastries. After enjoying a sweet treat to cap off your tour of this beautiful city, you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 13: Santiago

To accommodate your schedule, a late check-out has been arranged at your hotel.

One of the best ways to understand Santiago is to study the city’s historical development. Your tour begins by driving to Santa Lucia Hill, which is called Huelen in the native aboriginal dialect. Santa Lucia Hill was popularized by Spanish conqueror Pedro Valdivia who founded the city and gave it the name Santiago de Nueva Extremadura, in honour of the apostle Santiago, who was the patron Saint of Spain. Next up, you will visit the Plaza de Armas (Main Square), which is the central point of the city's earliest urbanization. Today, the Cathedral, main post office, National Historic Museum and Municipalidad de Santiago (city council) are located around the square. Carrying onward, you will tour through the Pre-Colombino Art Museum where more than three decades have passed since Sergio Larraín García-Moreno and the Municipality of Santiago founded the museum. Wander around in Plaza de la Constitución Square, see La Moneda Government Palace as you discover the fascinating historical milestones of the city from independence to the present day. Before returning to your hotel, you will visit one of the oldest barrios of Santiago: Republica and Concha y Toro.

You will be privately transferred between your hotel and Santiago Airport by a professional driver and an English-speaking guide.

We had a great trip. It was well planned and every detail was considered. The per-planning discussion with Kensington was methodical and they exercised great patience as we went back and forth on plans. The guides were terrific and the overall experience was very enjoyable. We’ve used Kensington on two safaris previously and we will use them again and again...
