Day 2: Santiago

One of the best ways to understand Santiago is to study the city’s historical development. Your tour begins by driving to Santa Lucia Hill, which is called Huelen in the native aboriginal dialect. Santa Lucia Hill was popularized by Spanish conqueror Pedro Valdivia who founded the city and gave it the name Santiago de Nueva Extremadura, in honor of the apostle Santiago, who was the patron Saint of Spain. Next up, you will visit the Plaza de Armas (Main Square), which is the central point of the city's earliest urbanization. Today, the Cathedral, main post office, National Historic Museum and Municipalidad de Santiago (city council) are located around the square. Carrying onward, you will tour through the Pre-Colombino Art Museum where more than three decades have passed since Sergio Larraín García-Moreno and the Municipality of Santiago founded the museum. Wander around in Plaza de la Constitución Square, see La Moneda Government Palace as you discover the fascinating historical milestones of the city from independence to the present day. Before returning to your hotel, you will visit one of the oldest barrios of Santiago: Republica and Concha y Toro.

Santiago is far more than a gateway to Atacama, Patagonia or the Chilean wine region. Host to a range of vibrant bars and nightclubs, tonight you’ll head out in the company of a private guide and professional driver to experience the best of Santiago’s nightlife. Begin the evening with a visit to Krossbar – a sleek yet casual bar - where you’ll enjoy a beer tasting, a proper pint, and a light appetizer. Carrying onward, your next stop is to Jardin Mallinkrodt – an open-air bar featuring a garden theme – where you’ll have another refreshment paired with a cocktail dish and an entrée. Your final stop of the evening is to the chic and sophisticated Siete Negronis where you’ll cap of the night’s experience with two more cocktails; the Pisco Sour is highly recommended. After a night on the town, you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 6: Mendoza

Enjoy a full day exclusive tour to three of the most important wineries of the region, Bodega Catena Zapata, Ruca Malen Winery and Achaval Ferrer Winery.

Bodega Catena Zapata is widely recognized for its revolutionary owner and wine-maker Nicolás Catena. He is known for introducing to the international wine community the true potential and quality of the Mendoza terrain. Argentina produces world-class wines, thanks to the Malbec grape in general and the wines of Nicolás Catena in particular.

Continue on a private visit to Bodega Ruca Malen, exclusively focused on making wines of excellence, based on their knowledge and above all, their passion for winemaking. The bodega visit will take you through the vineyards and sorting machines to the fermentation and aging rooms, offering an intimate glimpse into the wine making process from grape to bottle.

Achaval-Ferrer is a collection of old vineyards in beautiful places. They are committed to the production of wines that are expressive of their territory. They are a small winery because this is the key to top quality. Low yields allow the vineyards to express their personality in the grapes. Low intervention winemaking allows the grapes to fully express their vineyard in the bottle. Each of their wines is a different expression of Malbec.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at either Ruca Malen or Ruca Malen Winery, the choice is yours.

Day 8: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires boasts several magnificent and unique neighborhoods, but San Telmo and La Boca - as many travelers will tell you - should occupy one of the top spots. Today, San Telmo is without question one of the trendiest quarters of the city thanks to its cool, bohemian atmosphere and famed antique shops. Plaza Dorrego is the place to be on Sundays to find anything from antiques, memorabilia, second-hand clothes to dusty magazines during its traditional Antiques Fair. From San Telmo your private guide and driver will take you across to La Boca, arguably one of the most authentic neighborhoods. Its history was largely shaped by immigrants who, similarly to what happened in New York City’s Lower East Side, established themselves here at this gritty port-side barrio when they arrived in Buenos Aires. A working-class district, it has jealously guarded its identity, of which soccer and tango are major ingredients. What will strike you immediately is the peculiar architecture, especially along Caminito Street which in 1959 was declared an outdoor museum. It is the work of one of Argentina’s most famous painters and neighborhood philanthropists, Quinquela Martín. He gathered neighbors to paint the houses, made out of tin and scrap metal, in bright colors, emulating the early immigrants. The most recognizable icon, though, is La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box), right in the heart of the area and home of the Boca Juniors, the country’s largest soccer club

Day 9: Buenos Aires

“Paris of the South” is a reference that is often applied in conversation or writing when travelers talk about Buenos Aires. The city is characterized by a certain nostalgic, old-world beauty and once you see some of its architectural jewels, you know why this sobriquet is appropriate. On this tour, your private guide is going to introduce you to some of the city’s finest landmarks that represent its Belle Epoque era around elegant Recoleta and Retiro, with tree-lined sidewalks, turn-of-the-century palaces and handsome apartment buildings featured prominently. The sprawling Plaza San Martín, an important part of today’s exploration for example, is surrounded by several masterpieces such as the Beaux Arts Palace, originally built as a residence for the Anchorena family, an imposing mansion, partially, inspired by the Louvre. Putting this into perspective, in Argentina the name Anchorena evokes the wealth and power similar to the likes of Rockefeller and Morgan in the United States, Krupp in Germany or Rothschild in France and England. The building was acquired by the government and today houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then there is the Kavanagh Building, a ground-breaking Art Deco skyscraper that was at the time of its inauguration, in 1936, the tallest skyscraper in Latin America. Its construction was commissioned by Corina Kavanagh, a millionaire of Irish descent who sold two ranches at the age of 39 to finance her own skyscraper. Still in the same area, the Museum of Decorative Arts was the former home to Argentine aristocracy, the Errazuriz-Alvear family, an elegant piece of architecture, surrounded by sumptuous gardens and encircled by detailed, wrought iron railings. The list of splendid edifices you can see also includes Circulo Militar, designed in Paris and built in Buenos Aires for the Paz family who owned the La Prensa newspaper, the French Embassy, owned by the Ortiz Basualdo family until 1939 and the Brazilian Embassy, owned by the Pereda family until 1944. All of these large houses or mansions were known at the time by the surname of their owners because built between 1880 and 1930, when Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world, they transformed Buenos Aires into the most European of Latin American cities. Following the economic crisis in the 1930’s many of these buildings were difficult to maintain and their owners chose to sell them, which is why today they function as embassies, museums or hotels. By the end of your walk, you should have a pretty good grasp of the history that shaped the city’s urban development during its golden era of architecture and what these landmarks represent today. You can also enjoy a nice lunch at a selected nice restaurant in Recoleta. At the end of your excursion, your private guide will take you back to your hotel.

Day 10: Buenos Aires

During your day at leisure consider taking a riverboat to Tigre which lies on the Paraná Delta, English-style rowing clubs, countless marinas, humble dwellings and elegant mansions from the “Belle Époque”, such as the Tigre Club, are to be seen, as well as small pensions and upscale lodges, restaurants, tea-houses and simple picnic sites. If the outdoors are your passion, head out to a nearby "Estancia" where you can  enjoy a BBQ lunch or perhaps a traditional folklore show. Or spend the day in Uruguay visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Colonia del Sacramento. You can even rent a bike and enjoy the sites and sounds of BA at your leisure, from the zoo to the rose garden, it's yours to discover. If you are interested in art, tango, cooking or exploring the cafe culture of Buenos Aires, consider a themed private tour. Just ask your Destination Expert for more details in figuring out the most suitable options for you.

Buenos Aires and tango are nearly synonymous, and no trip to this cosmopolitan gem is complete without catching a show. This evening, enjoy a special night out as you are picked up from your hotel by a private driver and a bilingual guide, then set out to Rojo Tango. After settling at your table, take in a sophisticated performance that showcases the rhythm, emotion and gentle precision require to master this intimate dance. Delivered in a small venue with accented lighting, the costume and hairdo of each performer is accentuated, allowing you to better appreciate the embroideries, designs and attention to detail. Adding to the experience, you’ll enjoy a gourmet meal paired with refreshments, all of which is included. Before long, the evening will wind to an end and you will be returned to your hotel, full in body and spirit.

Sofitel Buenos Aires (formerly The Brick): Buenos Aires

Located in the sophisticated neighborhood of Recoleta, which is characterized by its neoclassical architecture, the hotel stands out in stark contrast thanks to its contemporary style and its imposing brick facade. This upscale hotel highlights the best of European heritage, inspired by its Argentine roots. It provides a space for different works by local artists, such as the imposing sculpture by Gerardo Wolgemuth, which takes center stage in the lobby. Allow yourself to be amazed by this five-star hotel's architecture, inspired by a utilitarian style, which will take you back in time to the 17th century, a testament to how such a universal material can be fashionable and retain its value over time.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
