The captivating history and wildlife-rich rainforests of this South American nation are on full display on this magical journey. Striking a perfect balance between historical discovery and natural splendor, this trip showcases the wonders of Colombia that, while unfamiliar now, aren’t likely to stay undiscovered for long. Our advice: Get there first.

After getting settled, the adventure begins in Bogotá, Colombia’s vibrant capital, where you’ll be introduced to the city’s fascinating history on a private tour. Begin where it all started in La Candelaria, the oldest part of Bogotá, and visit Plaza Bolívar, the Museo Botero (home to an incredible collection of art by its namesake, Fernando Botero), and the Gold Museum before taking in a breathtaking view of the city from the monastery atop Monserrate. Later, visit nearby Lake Guatavita, a sacred lake northeast of the city purported to be the source of the legend of El Dorado, before visiting colonial Zipaquirá and its famous underground cathedral.

After a few days in the Andean foothills exploring San Agustin and Popayan, towns central to understanding Colombia’s colonial past, a short flight brings you to Santa Marta, the gateway to the enveloping rainforests of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona. Accompanied by a private guide, you’ll head deep into this stunning environment nestled amid the Sierra Nevadas in search of wild creatures and if the seas are cooperative, a spot to swim. Later, you’ll have the chance to explore some of the nearly 30,000-acre (12,000-hectare) park in search of the hundreds of exotic bird species that inhabit it on a guided tour, or unwind amid the confines of your hotel before moving on to your next destination: Cartagena. ... Cartagena comes by its nickname – “the Venice of Colombia” – naturally. Protected by 17th-century fortifications and UNESCO alike, a romantic allure exudes from its every winding alley and cobblestone street. You’ll get an insider’s glimpse of the forces that shaped the city on a private tour of its signature sites, including the iconic Plaza de los Coches, Bolivar Plaza, the Palace of Inquisition, and Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, the largest Spanish fort in the Americas. Later, step outside the city and explore La Boquilla’s mangrove swamps on a private canoe excursion.

Day 2: Bogota

La Candelaria is Bogota’s heart and soul. The oldest part of the city and host to Plaza Bolivar, this esteemed barrio is high on any visitor’s agenda. As you wander the streets of La Candelaria away from the main square, your guide will not only explain the history of Bogota but also the intricacies of current Colombian culture and daily life. There will be time for a refreshment stop in one of the cities coffee houses before visiting the Botero Museum; a permanent exhibition of works of art by Fernando Botero, Colombia’s most famous artist, who’s oversized art is instantly recognisable. The museum not only houses work by Botero but also other world-famous artists such as Dali, Monet and Van Gogh. Next door you’ll find Casa de la Moneda, which is home to a museum that takes you on a tour of the history of Bogota focusing on the currency used in Colombia. With your guide in tow, the next stop will be the Gold Museum which is situated on the northeast corner of the Parque Santander. This is a must-see when in Bogotá, with more than 35,000 pieces of pre-Colombian gold-work in the collection. Break for lunch at Son de Los Grillos and then, following a short drive or interesting walk from the center of the old town, arrive at the base of the hill that leads up to the hill top view point and monastery of Monserrate. The summit can be reached by either funicular railway or cable car. Here, the highest point in the city, you are afforded excellent views of the different sectors of Bogota; from La Candelaria and its terracotta tiled roofs to the high-rise business sector and then on across the sabana (or flat plains) off in the distance. Atop Monserrate a new convent is a pilgrimage site for many Colombians whom make their way past the fourteen Stations of the Cross until reaching the monastery. You’ll also discover a few artisan shops along the way, with others selling snacks and refreshments. After a day spent exploring historic Bogota, you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 3: Bogota

This morning, your journey will take you to the Lake Guatavita which is a circular lake in the mountains in what appears to be a meteor crater. The origins of the crater are unclear however, it is reputedly one of the sacred lakes of the Muisca people, and a ritual conducted there is widely thought to be the basis for the legend of El Dorado. Your guide will expand on the many more legends associated with lake Guatavita. Lunch is included and will be taken at a local restaurant. Afterwards the journey will continue to Zipaquirá. Traveling north of the city, through countryside once occupied by the native Muisca Indians, Zipaquira is one of the more popular tourist destinations in Colombia. Zipaquira is most famous for its Cathedral carved underground in a still functioning salt mines just west of the town. The illumination and execution of the work is a tribute to modern techniques and years of work from the miners and artists. Around the central square of the town of Zipaquira the colonial buildings still hold their charm footed by brickwork paving and overlooked by the Cathedral Diocesana de San Antonio. Please note: Due to the unique weather patterns that develop around the lake, adverse weather can develop rapidly. Guests should prepare for rain, and there is limited shelter is available around the lake. As well, guests should prepare for extensive walking, often on rough, wet or uneven ground. Stout, comfortable footwear is advisable. Total walking time can be tailored on-site, however, guests should expect hike for a minimum of one hour and 30 minutes, and up to a maximum of four hours.

Day 6: San Agustin

Begin your full-day adventure with a trip to the principal archeological site in the San Agustin region. Here you’ll discover a remarkable display of stone statues – over 300 in total – of which precious little is understood. Miraculously spared damage through centuries of tumult, the significance of these carvings – as well as who made them – has been lost to history, adding to their mysterious allure. Standing out among the relics is the Ceremonial Spring of Lavapatas. The largest monument in the region, it consists of a complex maze of canals and pools carved into the stone bed of the creek, depicting snakes, lizards, salamanders, iguanas, chameleons, frogs and turtles, many anthropomorphized. Not to be missed during your exploration: the megalithic sculpture known as Alto Lava Legs and the Forest of Sculptures. Carrying onward, head to the historic site known as Hipogeos de Obando. The village of Obando, found two miles from San Augustín, is host to a revered treasure: ancient underground tombs which, since discovery, have been carefully restored and can now be visited. Concrete stairs guide the way, descending to an enigmatic, gloomy interior. After resurfacing from the tombs, visit the nearby Archaeological Museum that is housed in a traditional, thatched-roof hut. The museum exhibits a variety of mid-size and small stone statues as well as several pieces of ancient pottery found in the region. After a quick stop to the souvenir shop to pick up handicrafts, sweets or traditional foods you’ll return to your vehicle and carry on to your next site; the Magdalena River Strait. A particularly fierce and beautiful section of the Magdalena River where the river is forced through a narrow gap, the Strait’s landscape is immensely beautiful, and located just a few miles away from urban San Agustin. The waters in this part of the river are light green in color and clear enough to see the sandy river bed only a few feet below the surface. Explore the river from its banks and take in splendid views from the top of a hill where you will also have the chance to visit Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, a large sculpture representing the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After a day of discovery in San Agustin, Obando and the Magdalena Straight, you will be returned to your accommodations.

Day 7: San Agustin - Popayan

You will be privately transferred from San Agustin to Popayan by a professional driver and an English-speaking guide. Along the way, break for a tasty lunch at a local restaurant specializing in authentic Colombian cuisine. Total travel time, with time for lunch accounted for, is approximately six hours.

For most visitors to Colombia, Popayan is not considered a top-of-mind destination, but this is likely to change in coming years. Beyond its colonial history and important role in the transfer of treasures stolen by the Spaniards from indigenous populations throughout Latin America, Popayan is host to some of the countries most striking churches and cathedrals, as well as some of its best universities. 17 Colombia presidents have lived in Popayan, and a number of poets, painters and composers also hail from the city. In 1983, much of the city was destroyed during a powerful earthquake, though restoration projects have seen the vast majority of the structures returned to their original brilliance. Today, set out to explore Popayan on your own. In this cultural and political hub, consider touring Caldas Park – opened in 1537 – the Clock Tower – constructed using 96,000 bricks sometime near 1673 – and the Humilladero Bridge – which connects the central and northern zone of the city. The bridge was designed by Italian friar Fray Serafin Barbetti who mummified remains rest at the nearby Archdiocesan Museum of Religious Art. Whatever you choose to do, you’re sure to be captivated by the unique atmosphere of this historic city.

Accommodation: Hotel Dann Monasterio

Day 13: Cartagena

This tour combines the experience of a local fishing community and exploring the Mangroves by canoe. The fishing village of La Boquilla is located 30 minutes east of Cartagena in an area of mangrove swamps. Many of the villagers are of African descent and on arrival there will be a performance of dance and a refreshment of fresh green coconut milk will be served. The Cueva Del Manglar is the Spanish name given to this protected eco system which is rich in birdlife and in keeping with Colombia’s reputation of being one of the most bio diverse countries on the planet you may well see Kingfisher, White Heron and Pelicans. The tour through the mangroves is taken by Canoe paddled by local fisherman, an ideal way to navigate the shallow waters through the “tunnels” naturally created by the Mangrove trees. As well as birdlife there is a wealth of flora and fauna to see in this rich ecosystem as you glide through the Mangroves.

Sweet-smelling restaurants, trendy bars, inviting boutique hotels and well-maintained colonial buildings define the city center of Cartagena – also known as the Walled City, or Ciudad Amurallada. Best experienced at leisure, stroll through avenues dotted with colorful homes, passing by sweeping plazas, towering churches and the centuries-old wall that has protected the city since the late 1700’s on this free day in Cartagena. Consider stopping for lunch at the acclaimed Restaurante Donjuan Cartagena found in the heart of the city. A trip to the Caribe Museum is a must-see for jewelry aficionados. And for those seeking to simply relax in the comfort of the refreshing Caribbean breeze, miles of rocky shores are yours to explore just steps beyond the city walls.

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
