Breathtaking jungle environments, rejuvenated cities, romantic strolls, and street-art masterpieces: This is modern Colombia. Surprised? Join us on this captivating tour through South America’s up-and-coming destination, and you’ll quickly learn that there’s plenty more where those wonders came from.

We begin in Bogotá, Colombia’s vibrant economic and political capital. After getting settled, explore this bicycle-crazy city on a privately guided cycling tour of the historic La Candelaria district before heading out to explore the city by night with a guide. (If you’re here on a Sunday, your bike ride will also include a visit to the Mercado de las Pulgas de Usaquen, Bogotá’s favorite market.) Later, devote a day to Chingaza National Natural Park, a wild space on the edge of the Andes, where you’ll have the chance to see rare animals like the Andean condor, the páramo tapir, and maybe even a puma.

Next stop: the Risaralda department, Colombia’s coffee country. With the boutique Sazagua Hotel as your home base, you’ll have the chance to learn the secrets of Colombian cooking from the hotel’s resident chefs, ride the surrounding trails atop a Paso Fino horse, hike the scenic Valle de Cocora, and learn about the magic elixir so essential to local life on a private tour of a coffee plantation. ... A short flight away lies your next stop: Medellín, a city once synonymous with violence that has transformed itself into one of Colombia’s safest and most beautiful cities within a generation. You’ll witness the “Colombian Miracle” first-hand with a local community leader on a private tour of Comuna 13, a once-lawless barrio that, through civic leadership and community pride, has become a haven for street artists, musicians, and families. Medellín is blessed with one of South America’s most enviable natural settings, as you’ll discover later on a full-day tour of the sparkling lakes and colonial towns of Antioquia, where you’ll encounter the massive 656-foot (200-meter) El Peñol rock formation and stroll the relaxed lakefront town of Guatapé.

From Medellín, the scene shifts north to the shores of the Caribbean Sea and Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, a gorgeous slice of protected land in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Maria. Here, you’ll explore the park’s jungle-shrouded pathways with a private guide and discover the staggering variety of birdlife here on a guided bird-watching encounter through the fabled Minca region. Keep an eye peeled for hummingbirds, toucans, macaws, and hundreds of other species.

Last stop: Cartagena, the romantic “Venice of Colombia.” One of Latin America’s most popular honeymoon spots, this UNESCO-protected city’s cobblestone streets, and colonial walls cry out to be explored. You’ll do just that on a tour that begins at the Torre de Reloj entrance to the iconic Plaza de los Coches, where your private guide will regale you with tales from the city’s fascinating history as you walk its charming streets en route to the infamous Inquisition Palace.

Day 2: Bogota

Colombia is a cycling-crazed nation, and Bogota is an immanently bikeable city. Today, set out with your guide to the Candelaria district of the city where you will be outfitted with a bicycle and safety gear, then pedal your way through the heart of this historic district, riding up Seventh Avenue to reach the city’s national park. After a few miles, break for coffee, then begin the return back to La Candelaria. A wonderful way to soak in the sights of Bogota, the excursion takes on a special twist on Sunday’s as you are guided to the Usaquen Flea Market, the city’s best-known marketplace. After returning your bicycle, your awaiting private driver will return you to your hotel.

Zona Rosa is Bogota’s most gregarious barrio, lined with trendy bistros, designer shops, boutique cocktail bars and high-end restaurants. The night begins with a cocktail in a local haunt before your guide leads the way to a second hot-spot, perhaps Andres Carne de Res, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner followed by more drinks, all enjoyed while taking in live music. Day 3: Bogota

Chingaza National Natural Park is a lifeline to Bogota and the surrounding area; 80% of the city’s water comes from the region. This immensely important Paramo (or highland eco-system) is found just an hour's drive north of the city, easily accessible by guests with an interest in active adventures. Today, after meeting your guide and driver in the morning, set out to Chingaza. Upon arrival, set out to explore a few of the all-but-endless trails that are scattered throughout this sprawling park that spans a mind-boggling 76,000 hectares. With glacial lakes and various eco-systems home to a wealth of wildlife including tapirs, spectacled bears, condors and pumas, this is truly a unique reserve. Over 1,000 unique plant species are found in the park, with the strange, furry-leaves frailejón plant being among the rarest. Additionally, the park also holds deep indigenous significance as the ancient Muiscas considered this region sacred and it’s believed many of the lakes were used for religious rituals. After a few hours hiking through Chingaza, return to your awaiting vehicle to begin the trip back to your hotel in Bogota.

Day 5: Risaralda Coffee Region

Surrounded by the earthy aroma of native trees and the humming melody of exotic birds in a region declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in 2011, Sazagua Hotel offers a unique experience that is sure to be remembered. Begin your day with a freshly prepared breakfast paired with delicious, world-renowned coffee. Later, set out on a bucolic walk in and around the property aiming to spot some of the rarest avian creatures found in Colombia. Mountain blue birds, red-ruffed fruitcrow’s, golden-olive woodpeckers, hooded antpitta’s and many other striking winged creatures call this land home, and with feeders scattered across the hotel grounds, only time can tell what you may discover. For those looking for a more adventurous experience, activities such as horseback riding can be arranged with the help of nearby estancias, and for those seeking a more relaxed pace, informative and interactive activities including culinary courses or fresh-fruit tastings can also be arranged. Please speak to your Destination Expert for more information.

Naturally gaited with a smooth, four-beat step, Paso Fino horses are widely-regarded as the best breed for trail riding. Imported from Spain centuries ago, Colombian Paso Fino horses have, through generations, become known for their friendly nature and piston-like marching style. Today you will be paired with a Colombian Paso Fino horse and then set out on country-side trails to explore the coffee region. Over the course of your adventure, take in sweeping vistas, break for a tasty lunch, and after a few hours exploring the region, dismount from your horse and board an awaiting vehicle which will return you to your hotel.

Day 6: Risaralda Coffee Region

Departing from your lodge in the coffee region, set off for a day of active discovery in the Valle de Cocora (or Cocora Valley), first stopping in the town of Salento. The main square of this village has not changed in appearance or character for decades, and an energizing coffee break in a village cafe is the ideal start to the day, made better by the striking avenues lined with brightly painted Pueblo homes that serve as a backdrop. Arriving at the entrance to the Valle de Cocora, your guide will lead the way across a foot-bridge, past a trout farm and up a bridle path to arrive at lookout that affords panoramic views of a mountain-fringed vista accented by wax palm trees, a national symbol of Colombia and a protected species. Next, ascend into the cloud forest on trail that requires careful attention; this section of the hike tracks along narrows with slippery turns, over large tree roots and even across rivers, with the vegetation becoming increasingly dense along the way. The rewards are worth the effort, to be sure. Impressive birds are often spotted in this area, and – following more river crossings on basic foot bridges and stepping stones – you’ll arrive at Acaime Reserve where 12 hummingbird species have been observed. Feeders set throughout attract these entrancing creatures, meaning you’re all but certain to see a few species flitting about. After hot coffee and snacks, begin the return journey to the entrance of the reserve, trekking again through challenging conditions to reach the main trail, and soon after, your awaiting vehicle and driver. Please note: This tour requires roughly three hours of hiking, including two through difficult terrain. Suitable hiking footwear and attire is required.

Day 8: Medellin

This social development tour of Medellin provides you with a unique opportunity to explore the vibrant Comuna 13 district and witness the miraculous transformation of what was once one of the country’s most troubled neighborhoods (“barrios”). Today, the neighborhood showcases phenomenal transformation which has come about by way of innovative, determined social and urban planning by the local government and private investors. The success of Comuna 13’s ambitious makeover can serve as an inspiration and model for troubled and neglected communities around the world. In the gentle, undulating scenery it is hard not to appreciate the stunning contrast between this picturesque region and the modern, cosmopolitan city of Medellin. At the top you are greeted with a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the surrounding country side. There is normally a guide on the top of the rock to explain the local geography of the area and some of the unusual rock formations around the lakes below, as well as to point out the confiscated houses of infamous Medellin resident Pablo Escobar. The nearby town of Guatape is a lakeside getaway for the residents of Medellin and is an ideal location to explore the rural charm of Antioquia and take a leisurely walk along the waterfront or through the main town square with its brightly painted houses and store fronts. The surroundings of the Hotel Boutique Sazagua evoke the longstanding households from feudal times; wooden structures, spacious corridors, colonial flooring, Spanish tiles, lively colors, light and nature dominate the aesthetic. The eclectic decoration consists of furnishings and articles from various time periods and different locations from around the globe, plus a selected art collection. All these decorative elements create a captivating environment of comfort, refinement, amicable service and a personal touch in every detail.

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
