Day 2: Lima

Lima is a food enthusiast's paradise. Packed with award winning restaurants and innovative kitchens, the hardest part is deciding what to eat and where. On this private guided gastronomic tour of the Peruvian capital, sample some of the city’s most famous dishes and cap it all off with a delicious cocktail at a trendy bar in the bohemian Barranco district. This tour begins in the early afternoon with a visit to Chez Wong, the private residence of Chef Javier Wong, found in La Victoria district. Here you will sample Chef Wong’s award winning ceviche, declared "The Best Dish in the World" by The Guardian in 2014. Onward, you will head to southern Miraflores to enjoy lomo saltado, a Peruvian stir fry, at Panchita or Tanta, described by Lonely Planet as an homage to Peruvian street food. The third stop on this flavorful outing is Tio Mario, a stylish restaurant in the Barranco barrio where you will enjoy either picarones for dessert, or – if you have room – antichuchos, grilled meats on a skewer. Lastly, head to Ayahuasca Bar, just minutes from Tio Mario, for a tasty cocktail in what is often dubbed Lima’s most fashionable cantina. Please note: As this tour includes several tastings, please consider having only a light breakfast in the morning. Alternatively, guests may visit Huaringa's for their cocktail (reservations are required). Restaurants visited are subject to change based on seasonality and availability.

From award-winning ceviche to mouth-watering Peruvian-Japanese fusion, inspired French-influenced Novoandina cuisine to farm-to-table organic delights, Lima has it all. Tonight, discover this buzzing gastronomic scene firsthand. Reservations will be made in advance at the restaurant of your choice, and round-trip transportation in a private vehicle will also be provided. Our Destination Experts top recommendations for fine dining in Lima include: Maido, Central, Astrid y Gaston, Nobu, Rafael and Chez Wong. Please note: Your meal is not included and will be paid for on location. Reservations are confirmed at the time of booking and are subject to availability.

Day 3: Lima - Puerto Maldonado - Amazon

Enjoy a private transfer between your hotel and Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima alongside a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Board a flight from Lima with direct service to Puerto Maldonado. Approximate flight time is roughly one hour and 35 minutes.

Lodge staff will welcome you at the Puerto Maldonado airport, and take you on a short shuttle transfer to the river.

Join a motorized canoe transfer on the Madre de Dios River, and after approximately 45 minutes, you'll arrive to the lodge.

After a delicious lunch at the lodge, you'll gather with your explorer guide and choose from the various excursions available at the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica. As a first day, a suitable recommendation is a guided walk along the trail system where you'll discover the Amazon Basin.

This trail offers an excellent introduction to the jungle environment, winding past impressive trees such as the staggeringly tall kapok, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching and observing exotic insects. Also on your first night, try a twilight river excursion — a guided afternoon boat ride on the Madre de Dios river. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits, while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and up to three different caiman.

*Please note: this is a sample itinerary, subject to change based on weather conditions, and your individual desires.

Accommodation: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Exotic yet accessible, the Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica Lodge is situated in a private reserve surrounded by the vast Peruvian Rainforest. Climb the banks of the meandering Madre de Dios River and enter another world. Wake to a symphony of tropical birdsong and end your days by lantern light, falling asleep to the gentle night noises of the Amazon. As Peru’s pioneer in nature travel and research, Inkaterra provides an unforgettable introduction to this amazing realm of incomparable biodiversity. Inspired by native Amazon design, the private thatched-roof cabañas combine natural materials with contemporary amenities. Four cabaña options are offered, creating the most luxurious of all lodges in the Peruvian Amazon.

Day 4: Amazon

Wake up late or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m., for those who want to avoid the heat, and enjoy nature at its fullest. A full buffet breakfast is served from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. This morning you may visit the Lake Sandoval excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. Return to the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica for lunch.

After lunch, consider the remarkable Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. Ascending the first tower, 95 feet above the forest ground, you begin your encounter with the treetop realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. Be on the lookout for colorful toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and sloths. If you wish you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. The excursion finishes by returning to the lodge.

After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for about 30 minutes along the 650-foot wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush eco system, you may observe the various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora, trees and there is a possibility to see snakes of this flooded marshland. The walk finishes by returning to the lodge.

Day 5: Amazon

Enjoy a trip to Gamitana Creek, located 25 minutes by boat from the Inkaterra lodge. For one and a half hours, explore the rainforest along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek that is home to many piranha, caiman, turtles and birds, until the Sanipanga landing point. Navigate your way back downstream, observing the abundant flora and fauna along the way. Return to Gamitana Farm to do a short guided tour to see how local farmers grow fruits and vegetables.

After lunch, enjoy an excursion to Hacienda Concepcion, with over 200 different plant species, and learn about the uses and benefits of local flora. This is followed by a 30 minute canoe trip to look for turtles, sun grebes, nightjars and exotic herons.

Later on, consider the Rainforest by Night excursion. Biological activity differs greatly between night and day in the Amazonian ecosystem. Venture into the forest and experience the mystery of the animal activity that awakens in the rainforest after dark, enhancing animal resources to create new adaptation mechanisms. Listen to nocturnal forest sounds and spot species that only emerge at night. Return to the lodge.

Day 6: Amazon - Puerto Maldonado - Cusco - Sacred Valley

Board a flight from Puerto Maldonado with direct service to Cusco. Approximate flight time is one hour.

A local representative will meet you for a transfer, with private vehicle and professional driver, to your hotel in the Sacred Valley. Transfer time is approximately two hours.

The effects of being at high altitude vary from person to person. While some travelers will experience no discomfort, others may find the process of acclimatization more challenging. To ensure an enjoyable experience in the coming days, take some time to rest and allow your body to adjust to the change in environment.

Accommodation: Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness

Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness is built on a seventeenth century colonial hacienda by the Vilcanota River, just one hour from the city of Cusco and 30 minutes from Ollantaytambo train station. Day 7: Sacred Valley

Treat yourself to an authentic taste of the Andes with a privately guided trip to the local Quechua community of Huilloc. Here, a host family will prepare a home-cooked, organic meal with local products harvested in traditional and sustainable ways, which you will help deliver to those tending nearby fields. In a fast moving world, the people of Huilloc offer hospitality based on old, unwritten laws of the community which stipulate that visitors are to feel like honored guests, rooted in a desire to share the community’s history and traditions. Certain to be a trip highlight, discover that the centuries-old traditions of the Inca are alive and well while enjoying a native snack alongside an inviting Quechua family before carrying on to the ancient fortress, Ollantaytambo. The last Inca stronghold to resist Spanish conquistadors, the fortress is an incredible example of Inca military architecture and is found on the outskirts of the namesake town in an area known as Temple Hill, often the starting point for intrepid hikers heading out on the last leg of the journey to Machu Picchu. Lunch at Pakaritampu, near Huilloc, is included.

The mandatory tourist ticket, necessary for explorations in and around the Sacred Valley, is included. This tourist ticket is valid throughout your stay in the region.

Day 8: Sacred Valley - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu

In the company of a private driver and local representative, depart from the Sacred Valley en route to Ollantaytambo Train Station, the penultimate stop on your journey into the ancient capital of the Inca Empire.

Set near the base of the imposing Pinkuylluna Mountain, meander through the sleepy town of Ollantaytambo to arrive at the centrally-located train station where you will bid farewell to your local assistant and board the iconic Vistadome. Having settled in, the train will depart along a route that traces the Urubamba River, affording striking views of the dramatic landscape as you approach the valley below Machu Picchu. After a two-hour journey, the Vistadome will pull into a train station on the foothills beneath the ancient citadel in the town of Aguas Calientes. Here, your local guide will welcome you together with local hotel porters who will transfer your luggage to your accommodation.

Please note, strict luggage restrictions apply aboard the Vistadome: 1) Only one piece of hand luggage is permitted per guest, weighing a maximum of 11 lbs (5 kgs). 2) Hand luggage cannot be larger than 62 linear inches. Baggage that exceeds weight or measurement restrictions will not be permitted. Please speak to your Destination Expert for more information.

Board a shuttle bus in Aguas Calientes and begin the 30 minute drive to ascend Machu Picchu Mountain on a switchback road carved into the mountainside. Buses depart frequently, leaving Aguas Calientes approximately every 30 minutes.

Steeped in mystery, the mountain citadel of Machu Picchu has dazzled visitors since its discovery by American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Believed to have been constructed sometime around 1450 CE and abandoned just over a century later, it is one of the world’s most prized heritage sites, and for good reason; complementing a fascinating history and incredible architecture are unforgettable views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the wild Urubamba River some 2,000 feet below. With a private guide catering to your personal interests and providing an informative overview of the history and architecture of this ancient citadel, gain a firsthand understanding of – and intimate appreciation for – the pièce de résistance in Peruvian travel. Depending on the timing of your arrival, you will visit the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel found atop Machu Picchu, to enjoy a leisurely lunch either before or after your in-depth tour.

Board a shuttle bus at the entrance to Machu Picchu and make the 30 minute return to nearby Aguas Calientes. Shuttle buses depart frequently, leaving Machu Picchu approximately every 30 minutes.

Accommodation: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo

A top choice for those heading to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is an intimate Andean village with terraced hills, waterfalls, stone pathways and 83 whitewashed adobe casitas tucked away in the cloud forest. Member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, the property is home to an estimated 214 bird species – such as the golden-headed quetzal and the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock. After exploring the historic sanctuary, guests can enjoy Unu Spa, which combines classic nurturing treatments with a mystical Andean approach. The first-class restaurant features stunning views of Vilcanota River, and shares the secrets of Peruvian cuisine with a contemporary twist.

Day 9: Aguas Calientes - Cusco

The spectacled bear, critically endangered due to centuries of habitat loss, is the only surviving bear species native to South America. At Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo, efforts are underway to help ensure a positive future for this beautiful creature. Subsisting on a diet that features just 5% meat, spectacled bears roam day and night to scavenge for food, and unlike many bears, are great at climbing trees, making it easy for guests to enjoy their antics day and night, year round. Famously, Paddington Bear is noted to be from ‘darkest Peru.’ Today, please consider visiting Paddington’s long lost relatives and the wonderful recovery project underway near Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo. Arranged on site, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the challenges this native creature faces to survive in the modern world. A donation to the recovery project – in partnership with the Protected Natural Areas National Services – is mandatory, with a minimum donation of $10 USD per person required.

After a fascinating experience in the heart of the ancient Inca world, it is time to depart for the Imperial City, Cusco. Board the Vistadome in Aguas Calientes and relax as you embark on the scenic, four-hour journey to Poroy Train Station near Cusco. The route follows along the Urubamba River, climbing and descending through mountainous terrain utilizing, where necessary, a series of switchback rails. Consider purchasing a light snack or refreshment to make this sojourn through the countryside even more enjoyable. Before long, you will arrive at Poroy Station near Cusco.

Enjoy a private transfer between your hotel and Poroy Train Station found just outside of Cusco alongside a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Accommodation: El Mercado Hotel

Warm and rustic, El Mercado is found in the heart of Cusco, just three and a half blocks from the city's main square, Plaza de Armas. A centuries-old building, it was originally part of the historic farmer’s market and this is reflected in its causal decor and spirited, locally-inspired cuisine. With all the amenities expected in a modern hotel, each of the 32 guestrooms balance contemporary comforts with colonial architecture paired with El Mercado’s legendary hospitality to ensure an exceptional stay.

Day 10: Cusco

Even after decades of exploration and study, many mysteries are lost in the lands outside of Cusco. How was the massive complex called Sacsayhuaman constructed? What was the purpose behind the waterfalls and terraced rocks of Tambomachay? Why was Puca Pucara seemingly built in a rush? Was the amphitheater of Kenko used for human sacrifices? Although you may not find the answers to these questions, discover the known history and storied fables surrounding these ancient sites as you explore the ruins near Cusco. After returning to the city, participate on a walking tour that begins with a stroll through the cobbled streets of San Blas where a colonial church notable for its incredibly ornate, wood-carved pulpit will be visited. Onward, proceed to the Koricancha Temple, once walled in plated gold and featuring courtyard statues made of solid gold, Conquistadors described it as “fabulous beyond belief.” Today, the Church of Santo Domingo rests on the site of the original temple, making it an excellent location to learn about the intersection of Inca and Spanish culture and architecture from your private guide. Concluding with a visit to Plaza de Armas and Cusco Cathedral, this tour is an excellent introduction to the traditions, history and unanswered questions surrounding Cusco.

What did Inca astronomers see and think when gazing up to the stars high above the city of Cusco? To answer these questions, a privately guided visit the Cusco planetarium is a must. Upon arrival, first learn about Inca theories of the night sky and then watch as a virtual presentation of the southern skies simulates astral movements, bringing to life constellations that cannot be observed in the northern hemisphere. To wrap up the tour, test your eye by participating in direct observations using a telescope found on-site which will be focused on the best and brightest constellations observable at the time of your visit (weather conditions permitting). Please note: As the evening in Cusco can be chilly, please be sure to bring warm clothing.

After being picked up from your hotel in Cusco, embark on a twenty-minute drive to the starting point for your horseback adventure. After participating in a brief safety orientation you will begin a two and a half hour ride alongside an expert local guide, passing through fields, Andean-style villages and taking in fantastic views of Inca sites and vestiges that dot the countryside. From a distant vantage point, take in a wonderful view of the city of Cusco on your way to the Temple of the Moon, then disembark from your horse and meet an awaiting driver for the return transfer to Cusco. Please note: Guests are not permitted to visit archeological sites on horseback due to preservation efforts.

This evening, enjoy dinner at one of the premier restaurants in Cusco, Cicciolina Tapas Bar. Reservations will be made in advance of your arrival at this highly regarded bodega which features  a wide range of local specialties and western staples, prepared using the freshest ingredients sourced from the Sacred Valley. Please note: Your meal is not included and must be paid for on location. We had a great trip. It was well planned and every detail was considered. The per-planning discussion with Kensington was methodical and they exercised great patience as we went back and forth on plans. The guides were terrific and the overall experience was very enjoyable. We’ve used Kensington on two safaris previously and we will use them again and again...
