Day 3: Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

You will be transferred by a professional driver and an English-speaking representative to Lima airport.

Board your flight from Lima to Cusco. The flight will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

Enjoy a private transfer to the Sacred Valley, stopping along the way to tour Awana Kancha. A popular artisan outpost and a friendly place to experience alpacas and Andean culture, Awana Kancha textile mill is a fantastic place to observe traditionally-dressed women spinning colorful patterns before your eyes. Using the wool of alpacas, llamas, guanacos, and vicunas, the women create designs using natural dyes that have existed in the Andes since the time of the Inca. In addition to the textiles, visitors have the chance to hand-feed llamas or nurse baby alpacas with milk from a bottle. Following your visit to Awana Kancha, you will be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Take the rest of the day to allow your body to acclimatize to the change in environment and enjoy leisure time surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sacred Valley.

Accommodation: Sol y Luna Lodge

Sol y Luna, surrounded by tropical vegetation and high mountains, is a blissful getaway for travelers and families. The bungalows are built with local materials taken from the region. Bright and inviting, with individual color schemes and themes, rooms offer excellent linen and bedding. Day 4: Sacred Valley

Enjoy a full day excursion to the Pisac ruins located on the top of a hill overlooking the Vilcanota (Urubamba) river, a series of terraces, canals, houses, food storage and temples can be seen in very good shape. The most notable is the “Intihuatana” or solar calendar made out of a big piece of red stone. Continue to visit the Pisac Market where artisans from all over the area congregate to sell their crafts.

Lunch is included at Wayra Sacred Valley. Here, you will be surrounded by aromas of freshly baked bread from traditional wood ovens, as well as tasty empanadas with various fillings, served with lemon juice and hot pepper sauces, just to whet your appetite. You will also enjoy a variety of potatoes grown in remote Andean communities, whose inhabitants preserve these potatoes as a part of their own stories. Be amazed with many varieties and their unusual tastes, which reveal themselves in sauces, prepared with local herbs grown in the gardens and in the summer, with recently harvested corn.

As you enjoy your appetizers and drinks, the dishes - local tamales, anticucho kebabs, roast lechón (suckling pork), baby chicken and salmon trout baked in local herbs – are cooked to your taste to be then served at your table, with abundant house salad made with products from the organic garden.

After lunch, visit Ollantaytambo, a fortress built during the Inca Empire, excellent sample of military architecture. 8 hours in duration.

Please note: Due to weather conditions during the rainy season (December through March, and possibly longer) the Marinera dancers will not be performing at Wayra Restaurant, however the Paso horse show will still take place. As well, the Paso horse show ends at 14:30. Guests arriving for a late meal will not watch the show.

Houses, temples and a public square are all connected by narrow roads and steps cut into the mountainside. There are many theories as to the purpose of Machu Picchu; a temple to the sun? A fortress against jungle inhabitants? A sanctuary for the Incas? The mysterious lost city awaits you!

After the tour, enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge Hotel and the rest of the afternoon is to be spent at leisure!

Today you will board a bus from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes. For your convenience, the bus ticket is provided. Buses depart about every 30 minutes, once the bus is full.

After exploring the Historic Sanctuary and in-house excursions, guests can enjoy the Unu Spa, which combines the classic nurturing with a mystical Andean approach. On your voyage, you will sail along several tributaries of the Amazon, as well as on the mighty river itself. You are embarking on a spectacular adventure, to a place visited by only a few of even the most experienced world travelers.

Day 10: Peruvian Amazon Cruise

Nature Expedition. Board the ship's comfortable excursion skiffs for your first adventure. Life jackets, ponchos, rubber boots, and plenty of cold potable water are always available for you on board the skiffs.

Within the vast Amazon flooded forest, cruise along an amazing black water stream, as your guides tell you about the rainforest. You will explore what scientists call a “gallery forest,” because of its narrow vegetation that creates a tunnel of leaves. As we float through this tunnel, your naturalist guides help you to spot parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys in the trees along the riverbanks.

Walk into the jungle to meet native Amazonia people. With your guides as your interpreters, ask about subsistence farming in Amazonia and they will tell you how to cultivate these wild plants and trees. Here, deep in the primary rainforest, your guides identify for you the fruit trees and medicinal plants that comprise Amazonia’s natural pharmacy.

Visit one, where villagers plant palms to obtain oil. Go deeper still into the jungle, where you encounter more wildlife and learn about the Amazon’s natural pharmacy of medical plants. Wander under a canopy of kapok trees (ceiba pentandra), the tallest trees in the Amazon Basin

In the late afternoon, we will take our skiffs along the Pacaya River, journeying from Ranger Station No. 1 toward Yanayacu Lake, where you can view the abundant life that is hidden in the deep rainforest. You may see saki monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and the easy-to-spot heavy howler monkeys, leaping long distances from tree to tree. As the sun sets, you will hear the loud, ferocious sounding warning signals made by the howler monkeys as they mark their territories. When night falls, you will hear the second movement of the Amazon rainforest symphony, as other nocturnal animals send their shrill calls across the tree tops. We will use our special spotlight torches to locate night creatures, including, perhaps, huge caimans.

Tonight the vessel will be docked by the No. 1 Ranger Station in Pacaya Samiria National Park.

Day 13: Iquitos - Lima

The excursions today depend on the level of the river. Weather and time permitting, this will be the last opportunity to see how people live along the Amazon by visiting the lively riverside community of Belen by skiff, in Iquitos. Here, where the houses and shops actually float on the river during some months, you will see the bustling food market of the entire Peruvian Amazon where all local inhabitants throughout the region sell and purchase goods.

You have time to pack and prepare for the next stage of your journey.

Please leave your packed luggage in your cabins, to be transferred to the bus, before coming to the dining room for lunch.

Your afternoon in the remote city of Iquitos, accessible only by river or air, will not disappoint. This bustling town, complete with a house built by Gustave Eiffel, was once a rich center of the rubber industry. Everyone was awesome !

  • Christine Bordine — August 14, 2017 — South America

We absolutely loved the trip and working with the Kensington staff to arrange the details. The guides were phenomenal and the accommodations first rate. When we ran into a cancelled flight in Cusco, your team helped us out, notified the guide at the next destination of the situation and had put plans in place in the event that we would have to remain in Cusco another night. The guides were all very good, however the guides for the Sacred Valley/Cusco (Tatiana), Machu Picchu (Linder) and Easter Island (Sabrina) were phenomenal and really conveyed the passion for the area, history and culture.
