Day 2: Lima

Founded in 1535 as Ciudad de los Reyes, or the City of the Kings and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, Lima’s history is both fascinating and tumultuous. Discover the Peruvian capital firsthand alongisde a private guide and driver, beginning with a visit to two of the city’s trendiest barrios, San Isidro and Miraflores. Brimming with modern architecture, world-class restaurants, boutique and brand name retailers, quirky museums and inviting cafés, take in impressive views over the Pacific Ocean along an expansive and cliff-side, coastal boardwalk in Miraflores, then stroll through the well-tended parks and promenades of San Isidro. After an informative tour of modern Lima, you will be privately transferred to the bohemian enclave of Barranco, host to the MATE Museum. Aiming to bring Peruvian artists and culture to worldwide attention while offering the best in international contemporary art and photography, MATE facilitates this exchange through a dynamic range of exhibitions, residencies, and events, alongside a permanent display of work by renowned Peruvian fashion and portrait photographer Mario Testino. Soon after touring the museum you will find yourself in the heart of historic Lima, marveling at centuries-old buildings as the past is brought to light, beginning with a visit to the Government Palace and City Hall in historic Plaza Mayor. In the same square, completed in 1774, is the San Francisco Convent. An impressive example of Spanish Baroque architecture, it remains as striking today as it was in the 18th century despite the multiple earthquakes that have shook its foundation. Extensive catacombs underneath the convent host the remains of an estimated 25,000 individuals who were buried prior to the opening of Lima’s city cemetery; a visit to the aged tombs is one you won’t soon forget.

From award-winning ceviche to mouth-watering Peruvian-Japanese fusion, inspired French-influenced Novoandina cuisine to farm-to-table organic delights, Lima has it all. Tonight, discover this buzzing gastronomic scene firsthand. Reservations will be made in advance at the restaurant of your choice, and round-trip transportation in a private vehicle will also be provided. Our Destination Experts top recommendations for fine dining in Lima include: Maido, Central, Astrid y Gaston, Nobu, Rafael and Chez Wong. Please note: Your meal is not included and will be paid for on location. Reservations are confirmed at the time of booking and are subject to availability.

Day 3: Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

You will be privately transferred between your hotel and Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima by a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Board a flight in Lima with direct service to Cusco. Approximate flight time is one hour and 15 minutes.

Enjoy a private transfer to the Sacred Valley, stopping along the way to tour Awana Kancha. A popular artisan outpost and a friendly place to experience alpacas and Andean culture, Awana Kancha textile mill is a fantastic place to observe traditionally-dressed women spinning colorful patterns before your eyes. Using the wool of alpacas, llamas, guanacos, and vicunas, the women create designs using natural dyes that have existed in the Andes since the time of the Inca. In addition to the textiles, visitors have the chance to hand-feed llamas or nurse baby alpacas with milk from a bottle. Following your visit to Awana Kancha, you will be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

The effects of being at high altitude vary from person to person. While some travelers will experience no discomfort, others may find the process of acclimatization more challenging. To ensure an enjoyable experience in the coming days, take some time to rest and allow your body to adjust to the change in environment.

Accommodation: Sol y Luna Lodge

Sol y Luna, surrounded by tropical vegetation and towering mountains, is a blissful getaway for couples, families and solo travelers alike. Bright and inviting, with individual color schemes and themes, guestrooms offer excellent linen and bedding to ensure a comfortable nights rest. In the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, it is near Cusco and just minutes from the archeological sites of Pisac, Moray and Maras.

Day 4: Sacred Valley

The quiet town of Pisac, found in the south of Peru’s Sacred Valley, is host to an open-air market where artisans from across the region congregate to showcase their meticulously designed crafts. Vibrant hand-woven textiles, elaborately decorated pottery, carefully constructed jewelry and authentic Peruvian pan-flutes are just a few of the wares you’ll find on offer by the many merchants found throughout the market square. Open seven days a week, the market is most active and lively on Sundays. Nearby, the hilltop ruins of Pisac afford wonderful views from the many terraces, canals, houses and temples found at this remarkably well-preserved site. Notably, you will see Intihuatana, a solar calendar made from a large slab of red stone that aligns with the sunrise during winter solstice, found in a sprawling temple complex constructed from carved pink granite. The views are sweeping and memorable, and with far fewer crowds than at Machu Picchu, it is a quieter site to learn about Inca culture from your expert guide. The final stop today is Ollantaytambo Fortress, the last Inca stronghold to resist the Spanish conquistadors. An incredible example of Inca military architecture, it is found on the outskirts of the namesake town in an area known as Temple Hill and is often the starting point for intrepid hikers heading out on the last leg of the journey to Machu Picchu. Lunch at Wayra, found at Sol y Luna Lodge in the Sacred Valley, is included. Please note: Due to weather conditions during the rainy season (December through March, and possibly longer) the Marinera dancers will not be performing at Wayra Restaurant, however the Paso horse show will still take place. As well, the Paso horse show ends at 14:30; Guests arriving for a late meal will not watch the show.

The mandatory tourist ticket, necessary for explorations in and around the Sacred Valley, is included. This tourist ticket is valid throughout your stay in the region.

Day 5: Sacred Valley - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu

In the company of a private driver and local representative, depart from the Sacred Valley en route to Ollantaytambo Train Station, the penultimate stop on your journey into the ancient capital of the Inca Empire.

Note on Luggage: This morning, the private guide and driver who accompany you to the train station in the Sacred Valley will also transport your primary luggage back to Cusco for secure storage. You will bring a personal overnight bag aboard the train to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival to Aguas Calientes, you will disembark the train and meet your Machu Picchu guide immediately. This local guide will ensure your overnight bag is forwarded to your hotel in Aguas Calientes via hotel porters. This will allow you to continue directly to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival in Cusco, your primary luggage will be waiting for you.

Set near the base of the imposing Pinkuylluna Mountain, meander through the sleepy town of Ollantaytambo to arrive at the centrally-located train station where you will bid farewell to your local assistant and board the iconic Vistadome. Having settled in, the train will depart along a route that traces the Urubamba River, affording striking views of the dramatic landscape as you approach the valley below Machu Picchu. After a two-hour journey, the Vistadome will pull into a train station on the foothills beneath the ancient citadel in the town of Aguas Calientes. Here, your local guide will welcome you together with local hotel porters who will transfer your luggage to your accommodation.

Please note, strict luggage restrictions apply aboard the Vistadome: 1) Only one piece of hand luggage is permitted per guest, weighing a maximum of 11 lbs (5 kgs). 2) Hand luggage cannot be larger than 62 linear inches. Baggage that exceeds weight or measurement restrictions will not be permitted. Please speak to your Destination Expert for more information.

Board a shuttle bus in Aguas Calientes and begin the 30 minute drive to ascend Machu Picchu Mountain on a switchback road carved into the mountainside. Buses depart frequently, leaving Aguas Calientes approximately every 30 minutes.

Steeped in mystery, the mountain citadel of Machu Picchu has dazzled visitors since its discovery by American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Believed to have been constructed sometime around 1450 CE and abandoned just over a century later, it is one of the world’s most prized heritage sites, and for good reason; complementing a fascinating history and incredible architecture are unforgettable views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the wild Urubamba River some 2,000 feet below. With a private guide catering to your personal interests and providing an informative overview of the history and architecture of this ancient citadel, gain a firsthand understanding of – and intimate appreciation for – the pièce de résistance in Peruvian travel. Depending on the timing of your arrival, you will visit the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel found atop Machu Picchu, to enjoy a leisurely lunch either before or after your in-depth tour.

Board a shuttle bus at the entrance to Machu Picchu and make the 30 minute return to nearby Aguas Calientes. Shuttle buses depart frequently, leaving Machu Picchu approximately every 30 minutes.

Accommodation: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo

A top choice for those heading to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is an intimate Andean village with terraced hills, waterfalls, stone pathways and 83 whitewashed adobe casitas tucked away in the cloud forest. Member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, the property is home to an estimated 214 bird species – such as the golden-headed quetzal and the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock. After exploring the historic sanctuary, guests can enjoy Unu Spa, which combines classic nurturing treatments with a mystical Andean approach. The first-class restaurant features stunning views of Vilcanota River, and shares the secrets of Peruvian cuisine with a contemporary twist.

Day 6: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Board a shuttle bus in Aguas Calientes and begin the 30 minute drive to ascend Machu Picchu Mountain on a switchback road carved into the mountainside. Buses depart frequently, leaving Aguas Calientes approximately every 30 minutes.

Admission for your second entrance to Machu Picchu is included. All Machu Picchu admissions are valid for single use only, and allow guests to explore the citadel for up to four hours between 6am-12pm or 12pm-5:30pm. Please speak to your Destination Expert for further information on new travel regulations regarding touring Machu Picchu, and to address any questions you may have.

Today, you will have the opportunity to explore Machu Picchu on your own. Discover the mysteries behind this awe-inspiring ancient civilization at your pace. There are several activities you can choose from once you are onsite. Perhaps taking a hike to the Sun Gate or the Inca Bridge is the right journey for you. If you are seeking a more exhilarating experience, you may choose to climb Machu Picchu with a guide for an additional fee. Please advise your travel consultant if you are planning on making this climb into a reality. Another great pursuit is the Huayna Picchu. If you intend to take part in this climb, it must be booked in advance as there are a limited number of permits allowed per day. There is an additional cost for this venture and cannot be booked until complete and valid passport information has been provided. We suggest you arrive in Aguas Calientes at least 90 minutes before your scheduled train departure. If you have any questions about the activities mentioned above, it is encouraged that you contact your sales consultant for additional information.

For your convenience the bus tickets between Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes is provided. Buses depart about every 30 minutes, once the bus is full.

After a fascinating experience in the heart of the ancient Inca world, it is time to depart for the Imperial City, Cusco. Board the Vistadome in Aguas Calientes and relax as you embark on the scenic, four-hour journey to Poroy Train Station near Cusco. The route follows along the Urubamba River, climbing and descending through mountainous terrain utilizing, where necessary, a series of switchback rails. Consider purchasing a light snack or refreshment to make this sojourn through the countryside even more enjoyable. Before long, you will arrive at Poroy Station near Cusco.

Enjoy a private transfer between your hotel and Poroy Train Station found just outside of Cusco alongside a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Day 7: Cusco

Even after decades of exploration and study, many mysteries are lost in the lands outside of Cusco. How was the massive complex called Sacsayhuaman constructed? What was the purpose behind the waterfalls and terraced rocks of Tambomachay? Why was Puca Pucara seemingly built in a rush? Was the amphitheater of Kenko used for human sacrifices? Although you may not find the answers to these questions, discover the known history and storied fables surrounding these ancient sites as you explore the ruins near Cusco. Returning to the city, enjoy a delicious lunch at Incanto (included), which specializes in Mediterranean-Andean fusion and is described by Fodor’s Travel as “stylish” and “upmarket.” Refueled for the afternoon, your walking tour of Cusco will begin with a pleasant stroll through the cobbled streets of San Blas where a colonial church notable for its incredibly ornate, wood-carved pulpit will be visited. Onward, proceed to the Koricancha Temple, once walled in plated gold and featuring courtyard statues made of solid gold, Conquistadors described it as “fabulous beyond belief.” Today, the Church of Santo Domingo rests on the site of the original temple, making it an excellent location to learn about both Inca and Spanish culture and architecture from your private guide. Concluding with a visit to Plaza de Armas and Cusco Cathedral, this tour is an excellent introduction to the traditions, history and unanswered questions surrounding Cusco.

Day 9: Lima - Iquitos - Peruvian Amazon Cruise

You will be privately transferred between your hotel and Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima by a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Board a flight in Lima with direct service to Iquitos. Approximate flight time is one hour and 45 minutes.

Your guides await you, as your flight from Lima glides in for landing at Iquitos International Airport. After you’ve claimed your luggage, you will board an air-conditioned bus for your journey to the river.

Enjoy a scenic one-and-a-half hour drive through the Peruvian countryside to the small village of Nauta.

From the moment you step on board, you will enjoy the M/V Aqua’s atmosphere of low-key luxury. As you settle into your handsomely appointed, over-sized suite, you will feel the vessel begin to move; the beginning of one of the great adventures of your life. Stand on the Upper Deck to take in the view, as the M/V Aqua leaves Iquitos behind.

On your voyage, you will also sail along the largest tributaries of the Amazon, as well as the mighty Amazon itself. You are embarking on a spectacular adventure, to a place visited by only a few of the most experienced world travelers.

Before dinner we will perform a routine safety drill. Then it’s into the air-conditioned lounge, where you will learn about life onboard, and will have the first of the nightly briefings about your adventure to follow. You will meet the naturalist guides and the cruise director, who will use video, photos, and maps to explain the details of your journey into the Amazon.

Sit down, relax, sample some fine South American wine, and enjoy the truly world-class cuisine, created by Executive Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, whose restaurant, Malabar, is one of the best in all of the Lima. Schiaffino’s recipes, with the imaginative use of local products – fruit, fish, spices – make every meal a delightful adventure. (The menu always offers choices, including a vegetarian option.) Toast the beginning of a beautiful journey.

Perhaps enjoy a nightcap on the Upper Deck, under the stars, before retiring.

Day 10: Peruvian Amazon Cruise

Board the ship's comfortable excursion skiffs for your first adventure. Life jackets, ponchos, rubber boots, and plenty of cold potable water are always available for you on board the skiffs.

Within the vast Amazon flooded forest, cruise along the Yanallpa River, an amazing black water stream, as your guides tell you about the rain forest. You will explore what scientists call a “gallery forest,” because of its narrow vegetation that creates a tunnel of leaves. As you float through this tunnel, your naturalist guides help you to spot parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys in the trees along the riverbanks.

Embark on a dusk cruise along the El Dorado River, in search of exotic nocturnal wildlife and with extraordinary stargazing.

Day 11: Peruvian Amazon Cruise

In the bright morning light, your guides will show you parrots, macaws, toucans, and many different types of monkeys. You will also go to the dolphin feeding spots along Pacaya River, where you will be delightfully surrounded by these creatures, and serenaded by the jungle symphony while enjoying a light picnic breakfast and fresh juice.

After lunch, venture out by skiffs on the Ucayali River alongside the banana boats transporting jungle products to the small port of Requena, keeping an eye out for pink river dolphins. On your cruise are very likely to see the Amazon’s two different kinds of freshwater dolphins—gray and pink. Keep your eyes on the jungle canopy too, where your naturalist guides help you to spot some of Pacaya-Samiria’s 13 species of monkeys including tamarins, howlers, dusky titi and pigmy marmoset monkeys.

Day 12: Peruvian Amazon Cruise

Today you can choose to go jungle walking, canoeing, kayaking or swimming on the black water Yarapa or Clavero River in the morning. Kayaking the Amazon will bring out the spirits of past explorers, gliding soundlessly down a rain forest river in a kayak with only the sound of bird calls and rustling of troops of monkeys in the treetops overhead to break the silence.

Journey to a remote Amazonian village to meet native Amazonian people. With your guides as your interpreters, you will share their culture, traditions, folklore, and you will have the opportunity to purchase some of their delightful folk art and crafts.

Leaving the peace and beauty of the jungle behind, we will enjoy our final dinner together, swapping stories about the wonderful experiences shared on the river.

After dinner, your guides will introduce some of the crew members that you have not yet met, but who have been busy with the “behind the scenes” work that has helped to create a seamless experience.

Day 13: Iquitos - Lima

The excursions today depend on the level of the river. Weather and time permitting, this will be the last opportunity to see how people live along the Amazon, by visiting the Bellavista Nanay morning market along the Nanay River. Sample exotic snacks from the Peruvian Amazon like ‘Suri’, Amazon caterpillars that are considered especially appetizing.

Your afternoon in the remote city of Iquitos, accessible only by river or air, will not disappoint. This bustling town, complete with a house built by Gustave Eiffel, was once a rich center of the rubber industry. En route, we will visit the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have seized from local people and fishermen. Biologists will give a presentation about the project and its efforts to help these helpless mammals. You will also see how the manatees are cared for and are prepared for re-introduction into their natural habitat. Finally, we will stop at the San Juan Amazonian Indian Market, for a last chance to shop for local crafts.

Board a flight in Iquitos with direct service to Lima. Approximate flight time is one hour and 45 minutes.

Upon arrival to Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, you will be greeted by a local representative holding a sign with your name on it just outside of arrivals. • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
