Day 2: Lima

Delve into pre-Columbian history on a private guided tour of two fascinating museums. First you will visit the Larco Herrera Museum. Founded in 1926, the museum features the world’s largest private collection of pre-Columbian art, housing an incredible array of ancient pottery and jewels of gold, silver and precious stones, which in total amounts to more than 45,000 pieces including Paracas textiles. Next, continue to the Archaeological Museum, a must-see for history buffs. It provides an overview of the history of the region, with highlights including exceptionally well preserved mummies as well as spectacular textiles.

Enjoy a fixed-menu dinner at the restaurant "Huaca Pucllana." In the Fifth Century CE, inhabitants of the Lima Valley began to construct the Huaca Pucllana after receiving orders from local priests who served as the governing leaders of the region during that time. The Huaca Pucllana was designed for two main reasons: to showcase religious devotion and authority, and to secure and control the water flowing from the nearby Rimac River.

Thus, Huaca Pucllana was both an important ceremonial and administrative location. Today, the monumental pyramid and surrounding plaza remains, spread over the 15 hectare Pucllana Archeological Zone. Today, 15 centuries after the foundation of Pucllana, Huaca Pucllana Restaurant welcomes guests to enjoy some of the best Peruvian and international cuisine in the country. Enjoy!

Board your flight from Lima to Cusco. The flight will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes. Separate purchase.

Enjoy a private transfer to the Sacred Valley, stopping along the way to tour Awana Kancha. A popular artisan outpost and a friendly place to experience alpacas and Andean culture, Awana Kancha textile mill is a fantastic place to observe traditionally-dressed women spinning colorful patterns before your eyes. Using the wool of alpacas, llamas, guanacos, and vicunas, the women create designs using natural dyes that have existed in the Andes since the time of the Inca. In addition to the textiles, visitors have the chance to hand-feed llamas or nurse baby alpacas with milk from a bottle. Following your visit to Awana Kancha, you will be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Take the rest of the day to allow your body to acclimatize to the change in environment and enjoy leisure time surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sacred Valley.

Day 4: Sacred Valley

Visit the Chinchero Market where the local people wearing bright dresses get together to barter their products: good as well as handicrafts. Located 32 Km (18 miles) from Cusco and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the town of Chinchero appears in the middle of the puna. Around the main square, the remains of an Inca wall and the frescoes on the portico of the Colonial church can be observed. Next, you will visit Ollantaytambo, it is here in this beautiful strategic spot,  that the Inca Pachacutec built his fortress/sanctuary of Ollantaytambo. It is a beautiful setting and the hills that surround it hide some of the most impressive ruins in the Valley. It contains structures such as the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Hall, the Incahuatana and the Baños de la Princesa (Princess Baths). This site is one of the few places where the Spaniards lost a battle during the conquest. Lunch is included at Wayra Restaurant.

Please note: Due to weather conditions during the rainy season (December through March, and possibly longer) the Marinera dancers will not be performing at Wayra Restaurant, however the Paso horse show will still take place. As well, the Paso horse show ends at 14:30. Guests arriving for a late meal will not watch the show.

Our vacation was "perfection from start to end". What a great feeling it was to know someone was at each airport/train waiting for us, driving us to the hotels, checked us into our hotels and didn't just drop us off, discussed each days itinerary and pick up times - called us in our room to verify times. When they say they will be there at 9:20, rest assured they will be there exactly at that time. The drivers, tour guides and representatives Bruno, Mel, Thomas, Betty, Paul, Willy & Hilda spoke excellent English, knew their history of Peru extremely well. We asked all kinds of questions and they were able to answer every question as well as taught us how to say thank you in Quechua and Aymara. The hotels were outstanding and exceptional! If I over looked anyone or any other detail - you all were outstanding including Kelly and Maria who put this trip together bending over backwards to make every detail perfect. You have made the perfect vacation even more perfect!!! I will add my review to TripAdvisor. Thank you so so much.

  • Karen G. — July 15, 2016 — South America

We had an excellent vacation. We loved Peru. The logistics and quality of guides were very good. In particular, the tour guides at Machu Picchu, the Amazon and Lima historical old town were excellent.

  • Anne C. — June 30, 2016 — South America

The local guides were great, in Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lima. I really enjoyed having the same guide, driver and car for all activities in the Sacred Valley, Cusco. It really helped to make us feel comfortable. The accommodations were great, especially at Sol y Luna lodge. Everyone was very willing to help make the trip what we wanted and accommodate our needs. The timing of tours worked out really well and think the trip was planned according to our needs, including things we may not have even been aware of.

  • Bruce C. — June 15, 2016 — South America

Our trip to Machu Picchu was to celebrate our 15 year anniversary, it was amazing!!!! We are frequent travelers and don't normally use a travel company but did for this trip, it was fantastic. Everything was cared for, the tour guides were very knowledgeable and passionate about their culture. They truly took the effort out of this trip for us. We will definitely use Kensington again.
