Day 2: Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

A local representative will meet you in the lobby of the Wyndham Costa del Sol, guide you to Jorge Chávez International Airport and assist with flight check-in.

Board a flight in Lima with direct service to Cusco. Approximate flight time is one hour and 15 minutes.

Enjoy a private transfer to the Sacred Valley, stopping along the way to tour Awana Kancha. A popular artisan outpost and a friendly place to experience alpacas and Andean culture, Awana Kancha textile mill is a fantastic place to observe traditionally-dressed women spinning colorful patterns before your eyes. Using the wool of alpacas, llamas, guanacos, and vicunas, the women create designs using natural dyes that have existed in the Andes since the time of the Inca. In addition to the textiles, visitors have the chance to hand-feed llamas or nurse baby alpacas with milk from a bottle. Following your visit to Awana Kancha, you will be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

The effects of being at high altitude vary from person to person. While some travelers will experience no discomfort, others may find the process of acclimatization more challenging. To ensure an enjoyable experience in the coming days, take some time to rest and allow your body to adjust to the change in environment.

Day 3: Sacred Valley

Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the idyllic town of Chinchero would be similar to many other quiet Andean villages that dot the land if not for the bustling open-air market found in the main square. World-famous, this colorful fair operates Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and is the best place in the country to barter for hand-woven dresses and carefully-crafted trinkets, or to simply peruse seemingly endless wares. Chinchero is also host to the remains of an Inca wall and an excellent fresco on the portico of the nearby colonial church, both of which will be visited. Carrying on with your guide and driver, visit Ollantaytambo Fortress,  the last Inca stronghold to resist the Spanish conquistadors. It is an incredible example of Inca military architecture, found on the outskirts of the namesake town in an area known as Temple Hill, and is often the starting point for intrepid hikers heading out on the last leg of the journey to Machu Picchu along the Inca Trail. Lunch at Tunupa, a buffet-style restaurant featuring a range of Novo-Andean cuisine, is included.

The mandatory tourist ticket, necessary for explorations in and around the Sacred Valley, is included. This tourist ticket is valid throughout your stay in the region.

Day 4: Sacred Valley - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu

In the company of a private driver and local representative, depart from the Sacred Valley en route to Ollantaytambo Train Station, the penultimate stop on your journey into the ancient capital of the Inca Empire.

Note on Luggage: This morning, the private guide and driver who accompany you to the train station in the Sacred Valley will also transport your primary luggage back to Cusco for secure storage. You will bring a personal overnight bag aboard the train to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival to Aguas Calientes, you will disembark the train and meet your Machu Picchu guide immediately. This local guide will ensure your overnight bag is forwarded to your hotel in Aguas Calientes via hotel porters. This will allow you to continue directly to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival in Cusco, your primary luggage will be waiting for you.

Set near the base of the imposing Pinkuylluna Mountain, meander through the sleepy town of Ollantaytambo to arrive at the centrally-located train station where you will bid farewell to your local assistant and board the iconic Vistadome. Having settled in, the train will depart along a route that traces the Urubamba River, affording striking views of the dramatic landscape as you approach the valley below Machu Picchu. After a two-hour journey, the Vistadome will pull into a train station on the foothills beneath the ancient citadel in the town of Aguas Calientes. Here, your local guide will welcome you together with local hotel porters who will transfer your luggage to your accommodation.

Please note, strict luggage restrictions apply aboard the Vistadome: 1) Only one piece of hand luggage is permitted per guest, weighing a maximum of 11 lbs (5 kgs). 2) Hand luggage cannot be larger than 62 linear inches. Baggage that exceeds weight or measurement restrictions will not be permitted. Please speak to your Destination Expert for more information.

Board a shuttle bus in Aguas Calientes and begin the 30 minute drive to ascend Machu Picchu Mountain on a switchback road carved into the mountainside. Buses depart frequently, leaving Aguas Calientes approximately every 30 minutes.

Steeped in mystery, the mountain citadel of Machu Picchu has dazzled visitors since its discovery by American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Believed to have been constructed sometime around 1450 CE and abandoned just over a century later, it is one of the world’s most prized heritage sites, and for good reason; complementing a fascinating history and incredible architecture are unforgettable views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the wild Urubamba River some 2,000 feet below. With a private guide catering to your personal interests and providing an informative overview of the history and architecture of this ancient citadel, gain a firsthand understanding of – and intimate appreciation for – the pièce de résistance in Peruvian travel. Depending on the timing of your arrival, you will visit the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel found atop Machu Picchu, to enjoy a leisurely lunch either before or after your in-depth tour.

Board a shuttle bus at the entrance to Machu Picchu and make the 30 minute return to nearby Aguas Calientes. Shuttle buses depart frequently, leaving Machu Picchu approximately every 30 minutes.

Accommodation: Inkaterra El Mapi Hotel

Day 5: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Board a shuttle bus in Aguas Calientes and begin the 30 minute drive to ascend Machu Picchu Mountain on a switchback road carved into the mountainside. Buses depart frequently, leaving Aguas Calientes approximately every 30 minutes.

High in the mountains near Machu Picchu is a well-trodden, ancient rock pathway that leads the way to the ceremonial and traditional entrance to Machu Picchu citadel, known as Inti Punku (or Sun Gate). This trail is considered by many to be the most essential hike in Peru as it affords stunning vistas of the landscape and culminates in a spectacular view of the Machu Picchu citadel where the entire complex can be appreciated from a single vantage point. Roughly one mile in length, and including an ascent of approximately 1,000 feet, the flat-faced stones laid on the mountainside have been traveled for more than five centuries by a dizzying range of people, from the earliest Inca settlers to the intrepid travelers of the present. Today, with an expert local guide by your side, march in the footsteps of the Inca while enjoying dramatic views of the area, including the Urubamaba River, Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Please note: this hike is considered to be moderately difficult, typically takes three to four hours to complete, and is not recommended for guests with mobility restrictions.

Board a shuttle bus at the entrance to Machu Picchu and make the 30 minute return to nearby Aguas Calientes. Shuttle buses depart frequently, leaving Machu Picchu approximately every 30 minutes.

After a fascinating experience in the heart of the ancient Inca world, it is time to depart for the Imperial City, Cusco. Board the Vistadome in Aguas Calientes and relax as you embark on the scenic, four-hour journey to Poroy Train Station near Cusco. The route follows along the Urubamba River, climbing and descending through mountainous terrain utilizing, where necessary, a series of switchback rails. Consider purchasing a light snack or refreshment to make this sojourn through the countryside even more enjoyable. Before long, you will arrive at Poroy Station near Cusco.

Enjoy a private transfer between your hotel and Poroy Train Station found just outside of Cusco alongside a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Day 6: Cusco

This three-hour, privately guided walking tour of Cusco begins with a pleasant stroll through the cobbled streets of the San Blas district where you will visit a colonial church notable for its incredibly ornate wood-carved pulpit. Carrying onward, proceed to the Koricancha Temple, once walled in plated gold and featuring courtyard statues made of solid gold, Conquistadors described it as “fabulous beyond belief.” Today, the Church of Santo Domingo rests on the site of the original temple, making it an excellent location to learn about the intersection of Inca and Spanish culture and architecture from your expert local guide. Concluding with a visit to Plaza de Armas and Cusco Cathedral, this encompassing tour is an excellent introduction to the traditions and history of this incredible city.

What did Inca astronomers see and think when gazing up to the stars high above the city of Cusco? To answer these questions, a privately guided visit the Cusco planetarium is a must. Upon arrival, first learn about Inca theories of the night sky and then watch as a virtual presentation of the southern skies simulates astral movements, bringing to life constellations that cannot be observed in the northern hemisphere. To wrap up the tour, test your eye by participating in direct observations using a telescope found on-site which will be focused on the best and brightest constellations observable at the time of your visit (weather conditions permitting). Please note: As the evening in Cusco can be chilly, please be sure to bring warm clothing.

Day 8: La Paz

Strike out to visit the city of Tiwanaku, capital of an ancient civilization by the same name. Located roughly 45 miles outside the city of La Paz and near the south-eastern shores of Lake Titicaca, Tiwanaku was once the largest settlement in the Latin world and is considered to be the birthplace of all American civilizations. This pre-Columbian ruin has sparked countless and seemingly endless archeological debates. The most recent radiocarbon tests show that this edification dates back to 1580 B.C, though others have contested the results. In this ancient and breathtaking city, visit the Kalasasaya Temple (Sun Temple) and the semi-subterranean Akapana Pyramid (Earth Pyramid). The tour also includes a visit to an impressive museum filled with ancient objects and tools that stand as proof of just how advanced this civilization really was. Lunch, as well as round-trip transfers, are included.

On the outskirts of La Paz an astonishing formation has taken shape over the millennia. Known as the Moon Valley, this all-but-lunar region is host to a mountain composed mainly of clay (as opposed to rock), which has eroded in a unique way, leaving a cascade of spires stretching across the valley. After arriving, your English-speaking guide will lead the way on a brief hike, allowing you to explore the region at your own pace, and when the time is right, will take you to a small ceramic workshop where you’ll learn about pottery in Bolivia and have the chance to purchase a keepsake if you so choose. Following your experience in the Moon Valley, you will be returned to your hotel in La Paz.

The first village you will visit is San Cristobal, a mining town which produces incredible amounts of silver. Characterized by open-pit mines and a striking 350-year old church, Iglesia San Cristobal Lipez, San Cristobal was relocated in 1998 in order to allow corporations to better access the valuable natural resources below. Next up, join an exclusive group of travellers with a visit to the rarely seen Rock Valley, a group of red rocks which form an interesting landscape of rocky spires that jut out of the desert. You will then break for a picnic lunch before traveling on toward Ojo de Perdiz. Along the way, stop at the lookout at Ollagüe Volcano where you can observe volcanic activity over an incredible desert land. With the help of your knowledgeable guides, you will determine how far your physical strength can take you, amid the immense Atacama Desert. The expeditions can be physically demanding or relaxed, they can engage you intellectually or simply let you feel the energy of the desert. Excursions are in small groups, leaving no traces.

Accommodation: Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa

Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa is the only lodge in the San Pedro region that is totally enveloped by natural surroundings. Located in the lush Catarpe Valley of the Salt Mountain Range, just over a mile from the plaza of San Pedro, the Alto Atacama’s design was influenced by local village architecture and conceived to blend seamlessly into its environment and appear as a part of the terracotta-colored ridge that rises behind it. The setting, the sweeping views, the tranquility and silence, and the hotel’s wonderful outdoor lounge spaces make the Alto Atacama a destination unto itself, and unlike any other hotel property in the region. Environmental sustainability and a strong connection with the local culture have put the Alto Atacama in a category of its own, as has its “Andescape” concept of decorative flora and stable of friendly llamas and alpacas, local cuisine, and Leave No Trace-schooled guides.

Day 13: San Pedro de Atacama

This extensive, guided group tour will take you across some of the aridest and inhospitable regions of the desert, recreating old routes formed by the ancient people of this area. You will start in the east, at the Valley of Mars, before trekking through to the Llano de la Paciencia, and on to the western side of the Valley of the Moon. From there, cross to the Cordillera de la Sal, and pass the “Three Marys” (Ancient rock formations sculpted largely by extreme winds) and on to an exploration of the central crater of Valley of the Moon. The geology changes throughout this trek, including giant sand dunes and compacted salt mineral beds. Please note, this biking tour is 24 miles (38 kilometers) long through, at times, challenging terrain.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
