Day 2: Lima

Founded in 1535 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, Lima’s history is both fascinating and tumultuous. Discover this history firsthand with your private guide and driver, beginning with a visit to the Larco Herrera Museum; host to what is likely the most comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian art in the world. Peer at ceremonial masks, elaborate busts, golden headdresses, necklaces and earrings, and a sweeping array of earthenware on an insightful curated tour led by an associate scholar of the museum. After lunch at the Larco Museum Café (included), your private guide and driver will take you to Lima’s historical center to marvel at centuries-old buildings such as the Government Palace and City Hall in Plaza Mayor. In the same square, completed in 1774, is the San Francisco Convent. An impressive example of Spanish Baroque architecture, it remains as striking today as it was in the 18th century despite the multiple earthquakes that have shook its foundation. Extensive catacombs underneath the convent host the remains of an estimated 25,000 individuals who were buried prior to the opening of Lima’s city cemetery; a visit to the aged tombs is one you won’t soon forget. Rounding out the day, stop by two of the city’s trendiest barrios, San Isidro and Miraflores. Stroll through well-tended promenades, lush city parks, past embassies, consulates and thriving businesses as you explore San Isidro and then enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean along the expansive, coastal boardwalk in Miraflores. Please note: Your tour of the Larco Herrera Museum will be led by an associate scholar and your guide will not join you.

From award-winning ceviche to mouth-watering Peruvian-Japanese fusion, inspired French-influenced Novoandina cuisine to farm-to-table organic delights, Lima has it all. Tonight, discover this buzzing gastronomic scene firsthand. Reservations will be made in advance at the restaurant of your choice, and round-trip transportation in a private vehicle will also be provided. Our Destination Experts top recommendations for fine dining in Lima include: Maido, Central, Astrid y Gaston, Nobu, Rafael and Chez Wong. Please note: Your meal is not included and will be paid for on location. Reservations are confirmed at the time of booking and are subject to availability.

Day 3: Lima - Puerto Maldonado - Amazon

You will be privately transferred between your hotel and Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima by a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Board a flight from Lima with direct service to Puerto Maldonado. Approximate flight time is roughly one hour and 35 minutes.

Lodge staff will welcome you at the Puerto Maldonado airport, and take you on a short shuttle transfer to the river.

Join a motorized canoe transfer on the Madre de Dios River, and after approximately 45 minutes, you'll arrive to the lodge.

After a delicious lunch at the lodge, gather with your explorer guide and choose from the various excursions available at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica. On your first day, a suitable recommendation is a guided walk along the trail system where you'll discover the Amazon Basin.

This trail offers an excellent introduction to the jungle environment, winding past impressive trees such as the staggeringly tall kapok, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and the observation of exotic insects. Also on your first night, consider participating on a twilight river excursion. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world; animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits, while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and up to three different caiman.

*Please note: this is a sample itinerary, subject to change based on weather conditions, and your individual desires.

Accommodation: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Exotic yet accessible, the Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica Lodge is situated in a private reserve surrounded by the vast Peruvian Rainforest. Climb the banks of the meandering Madre de Dios River and enter another world. Wake to a symphony of tropical birdsong and end your days by lantern light, falling asleep to the gentle night noises of the Amazon. As Peru’s pioneer in nature travel and research, Inkaterra provides an unforgettable introduction to this amazing realm of incomparable biodiversity. Inspired by native Amazon design, the private thatched-roof cabañas combine natural materials with contemporary amenities. Four cabaña options are offered, creating the most luxurious of all lodges in the Peruvian Amazon.

Day 4: Amazon

Wake up late or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30 am for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest, and is served until 9:30 am. Following breakfast, you may visit Lake Sandoval on an excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. Return to the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica for lunch.

After lunch, consider participating on the remarkable Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. Ascending the first tower, 95 feet above the forest ground, you begin your encounter with the treetop realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. Be on the lookout for colorful toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and sloths. If you wish, you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. The excursion finishes by returning to the lodge.

After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for roughly 30 minutes along the 650-foot wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush ecosystem, you may observe the various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora, trees and there is a possibility to see snakes of this flooded marshland. The walk finishes by returning to the lodge.

Day 5: Amazon

Enjoy a trip to Gamitana Creek, located 25 minutes by boat from the Inkaterra lodge. For one and a half hours, explore the rainforest along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek that is home to many piranha, caiman, turtles and birds, until reaching the Sanipanga landing point. Navigate your way back downstream, observing the abundant flora and fauna along the way. Return to Gamitana Farm to enjoy a short tour that showcases how local farmers grow fruits and vegetables.

After lunch, enjoy an excursion to Hacienda Concepcion which features over 200 different plant species, and learn about the uses of local flora. This is followed by a 30 minute canoe trip to look for turtles, sun grebes, nightjars and exotic herons.

Later on, consider heading out on the Rainforest by Night excursion. Biological activity differs greatly between night and day in the Amazonian ecosystem. Venture into the forest and experience the mystery of the animal activity that awakens in the rainforest after dark. Listen to nocturnal forest sounds and spot species that only emerge after the sun sets.

Day 7: Cusco

Begin the day with a trip to the Pisac Market, where artisans from across the region congregate to showcase their meticulously designed crafts. Vibrantly colored hand-woven textiles, elaborately decorated pottery, carefully constructed jewelry and authentic Peruvian pan flutes are just a few of the wares you’ll find on offer by the many merchants you’ll meet during your guided tour of the market square. Next, head back to Cusco where you will enjoy a delicious lunch at Incanto (included), which specializes in Mediterranean-Andean fusion and is described by Fodor’s Travel as “stylish” and “upmarket." Refueled for the afternoon, your walking tour of Cusco will begin with a pleasant stroll through the quaint, cobbled streets of the San Blas district where a colonial church notable for its incredibly ornate wood-carved pulpit will be visited. Onward, you will proceed to the Koricancha Temple, once walled in plated gold and featuring courtyard statues made of solid gold, Conquistadors described it as “fabulous beyond belief.” Today, the Church of Santo Domingo rests on the site of the original temple, making it an excellent location to learn about the intersection of Inca and Spanish culture and architecture from your expert local guide. Concluding with a visit to Plaza de Armas and Cusco Cathedral, this encompassing tour is an excellent introduction to the traditions and history of this incredible land.

Day 8: Cusco - Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu

Enjoy a private transfer between your hotel and Poroy Train Station found just outside of Cusco alongside a professional driver and an English-speaking representative.

Note on Luggage: This morning, the private guide and driver who accompany you to the train station in the Sacred Valley will also transport your primary luggage back to Cusco for secure storage. You will bring a personal overnight bag aboard the train to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival to Aguas Calientes, you will disembark the train and meet your Machu Picchu guide immediately. This local guide will ensure your overnight bag is forwarded to your hotel in Aguas Calientes via hotel porters. This will allow you to continue directly to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival in Cusco, your primary luggage will be waiting for you.

After arriving at Poroy Train Station, bid farewell to your local assistant and board the iconic Vistadome. Having settled in, the train will depart from high in the mountains along a series of switchback rails, known as The Zigzag, descending into the dale below. Tracing the impressive Urubamba River, enjoy striking views of the dramatic landscape as you begin the voyage into the heart of the Sacred Valley. Pass through the sleepy town of Ollantaytambo which rests beside the imposing Pinkuylluna Mountain where there will be a brief stop to drop-off and collect passengers. Soon the Vistadome will set off on the final, two-hour leg of the journey, before long arriving in the foothills beneath the ancient citadel in the town of Aguas Calientes. Here, your local guide will welcome you together with local hotel porters who will transfer your luggage to your accommodation.

Please note, strict luggage restrictions apply aboard the Vistadome: 1) Only one piece of hand luggage is permitted per guest, weighing a maximum of 11 lbs (5 kgs). 2) Hand luggage cannot be larger than 62 linear inches. Baggage that exceeds weight or measurement restrictions will not be permitted. Please speak to your Destination Expert for more information.

Board a shuttle bus in Aguas Calientes and begin the 30 minute drive to ascend Machu Picchu Mountain on a switchback road carved into the mountainside. Buses depart frequently, leaving Aguas Calientes approximately every 30 minutes.

Steeped in mystery, the mountain citadel of Machu Picchu has dazzled visitors since its discovery by American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Believed to have been constructed sometime around 1450 CE and abandoned just over a century later, it is one of the world’s most prized heritage sites, and for good reason; complementing a fascinating history and incredible architecture are unforgettable views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the wild Urubamba River some 2,000 feet below. With a private guide catering to your personal interests and providing an informative overview of the history and architecture of this ancient citadel, gain a firsthand understanding of – and intimate appreciation for – the pièce de résistance in Peruvian travel. Depending on the timing of your arrival, you will visit the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel found atop Machu Picchu, to enjoy a leisurely lunch either before or after your in-depth tour.

Board a shuttle bus in Aguas Calientes and begin the 30 minute drive to ascend Machu Picchu Mountain on a switchback road carved into the mountainside. Buses depart frequently, leaving Aguas Calientes approximately every 30 minutes.

High in the mountains near Machu Picchu is a well-trodden, ancient rock pathway that leads the way to the ceremonial and traditional entrance to Machu Picchu citadel, known as Inti Punku (or Sun Gate). This trail is considered by many to be the most essential hike in Peru as it affords stunning vistas of the landscape and culminates in a spectacular view of the Machu Picchu citadel where the entire complex can be appreciated from a single vantage point. Roughly one mile in length, and including an ascent of approximately 1,000 feet, the flat-faced stones laid on the mountainside have been traveled for more than five centuries by a dizzying range of people, from the earliest Inca settlers to the intrepid travelers of the present. Today, with an expert local guide by your side, march in the footsteps of the Inca while enjoying dramatic views of the area, including the Urubamaba River, Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Please note: this hike is considered to be moderately difficult, typically takes three to four hours to complete, and is not recommended for guests with mobility restrictions.

After a fascinating experience in the heart of the ancient Inca world, it is time to depart for the Imperial City, Cusco. Board the Vistadome in Aguas Calientes and relax as you embark on the scenic, four-hour journey to Poroy Train Station near Cusco. Day 11: Puno

Enjoy a full-day shared tour by boat to visit Uros and Taquile Islands alongside an English-speaking guide. A Quechua speaking population developed an efficient and unique social system that continues to be passed from generation to generation in these parts. The islands are also famous for one of the world’s finest hand weaving techniques. Board a small boat and venture out onto the waters of Lake Titicaca. Visit one of the native Uros communities located on a man-made floating island in the lake. The Uros people live totally interwoven with the "Totora" reed which grows abundantly in the shallows of the lake. This way of life began over 500 years ago when the Uros built the islands in an effort to isolate themselves from the Coyas and the Incas. From here, continue onward to visit Taquile Island. The community here lives in perfect harmony with the environment. The locals wear colorful traditional clothes which they make themselves and maintain a strong air of group individuality. Men always seem to be walking around the island knitting the woolen caps they wear. Women weave traditional clothes, which are among Peru's most beautiful. Enjoy lunch on Taquile (included) and then return to Puno in the afternoon.

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

The local contacts and tour guides exceeded expectations. My son and I were impressed with the knowledge and friendliness of the guides. The guides took a personal interest in us as individuals. Ludwig, our Inca Trail and Machu Picchu guide, combined his sense of camaraderie, humor and historic reverence to make the experience memorable. The amenities and attention to detail were exceptional.

Hotel La Aldea de la Selva in Iguazu is absolutely wonderful. What a beautiful place! The guide at the falls, Cecilia, was very good. We went on the boat under the falls too, which was fabulous. The Brazil side falls was great as well. The guide was very helpful.

When you travel with Kensington, it's like having a friend in the country in which you are traveling say, "I'll meet you at the airport, take you to your hotel, pick you up each day and show you around."
