Where the Wild Things Are
The ultimate adventure awaits as you embark on a gorilla tracking experience in the dense tropical jungles of Odzala. Several groups of western lowland gorillas have been found in this corner of the rainforest and visitors are treated to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. With an experienced guide and tracker by your side, follow these nimble and agile creatures as they move quickly through the forest canopy. Your tracker has grown up in this forest and spends each day with the gorilla families. Often having decades of experience under their belt, your guiding team will be able to share a wealth of interesting facts about this wild ecosystem and ensure that today’s encounter is safe for both guests and the animals. Upon the conclusion of your hike you will return to your lodge to relax and re-energize before your next forest adventure.
Nature truly rules the roost in Odzala National Park. Here, the dense tropical forest is home to a staggering 4500 plant and tree species, which provide the much-needed nutrition and shelter to a host of unique fauna that has inhabited this verdant corner of Africa undisturbed for thousands of years. The majority of this emerald haven consists of open-canopy Marantaceae forest. Swaths of tropical jungle are interspersed with swampy forest clearings, often referred to as bais, that may present opportunities for exhilarating encounters with resident animals. Today, put your waterproof footwear on yet again and venture into the jungle surrounding your camp with your guide. Look out for the African beasts that freely roam this untouched land, but don’t forget to pause and close your eyes once in a while; simply listening to the cacophony of sounds of the untamed wilderness around you.

Monkey Business
Get close to one of the world’s rarest animals on a guided gorilla trek. Guests of Odzala are led on expeditions into the Marantaceae forest in search of the critically endangered species, the western lowland gorilla. The treks usually entail 3-4 guests accompanied by a skilled guide and tracker. There are several groups of gorillas found in the Ndzehi Concession surrounding your camp. Three of these groups have been habituated and two can be observed by visitors. Each group is known by the silverback at the head of the family, whimsically named after celestial beings. During today’s experience you will be able respectfully admire these magnificent primates in their untamed forest environment as they go about their usual activities.
Step outside and into the mysteries of the forest at night with your guide. On foot, look for nocturnal life in the treetops; from palm civets to various species of galago, insects and the flickering light of fireflies. Listen to the forest and feel at one with her gentle rhythm. Venturing out of the camp at nighttime gives you the chance to get up close to some of the more elusive inhabitants of the jungle that stay hidden during daylight hours.
