When we think about South Africa, we typically think of the land: The eye-catching sweep of Table Mountain looming over the Cape Town skyline; wild creatures roaming vast savannas; the jagged cliffs of the Cape Point Peninsula. Its beauty can’t be overstated. But not all of that beauty stands on solid ground. The coastline stretches for almost 2,000 miles and is met by two seas. To limit one’s visit solely to the land is to miss out on half the magic that makes South Africa special. Join us on an incomparable wildlife adventure that blends dry land and open water. Make your experience whole.

It all begins in Cape Town, South Africa’s cosmopolitan port on the South Atlantic. Here, you’ll ascend to the peak of iconic Table Mountain by cable car for a birds-eye glimpse of one of the world’s most beautiful cities before cycling down the mountain’s slopes en route to a privately guided walking tour of the city’s charming neighborhoods and sights. Later, explore the beaches, coves, and hiking trails of the Cape Point Peninsula while keeping an eye out for African penguins on a secluded beach and funky cafés at the surfing spots that line the route. At the exceptional Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in seaside Hermanus, take to the waves on optional whale-watching safaris or test your mettle by climbing into a shark cage to dive with great whites before flying north for a rendezvous with the Great Outdoors. Let the Sabi Sand Game Reserve play center-stage for your real-life nature documentary and get close to the fabled Big Five and other wild creatures on morning and afternoon game drives with experienced trackers. A perfect balance of land, sea, and sky, all South Africa is missing is you. ... Show More »

Day 2: Cape Town

Increasingly breathtaking views over city and seemingly endless sea come into crystal-clear focus as you ascend iconic Table Mountain by cable car. Leave the noise behind and hike away from the crowds, keeping watch for wildlife and rare plants – that is if you can peel your eyes away from the vistas. Energy permitting, you will proceed up to Maclear’s Beacon (the highest point on the mountain), for 360° panoramas alongside your expert, private guide. Fresh coffee and home baked treats revive the body before heading back down to sea level, where you will hop on a bike to cruise the Sea Point Promenade. Cycling along this buzzing stretch of urban life, you are all but sure to spot a few interactive art installations which are typically found on the esplanade. Cape Town’s artistic diversity and talent are so clearly evident in numerous original creations which cover topics from Rhino Conservation to Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island history. Bikes are dropped off at the V & A Waterfront where you and your guide will explore the Watershed’s quirky craft, design and township art projects, which are geared towards community betterment and empowerment. In the afternoon, stroll the cobbled streets of the Bo-Kaap with its brightly colored, 17th century houses and (driven by your personal interests) visit a selection of fascinating historical, artistic or culinary highlights. Briefly touch on politics when you pass by the Parliament Buildings and Company’s Garden or awaken your taste buds with samples from the food artisans on Bree Street. Discover both fine and street art in Cape Town galleries or perhaps meet trend-setting local fashion designers; it is while on the ground, in the action, and on the fly that the benefits of privately guided travel truly shine through as the afternoon is tailored to your hearts-desire. As the day draws to a close, what better way to wrap up than sipping on a refreshing cocktail in one of Cape Town’s underground gin bars, or savoring a craft brew in cool local hang-outs?

Enjoy a longer lunch, dining in a more refined atmosphere that typically involves several creative courses paired with exceptional wines. Handpicked, these restaurants offer a higher level of service, yet still typify the relaxed and vibrant Cape Town culinary scene. Please note: local drinks are included during your lunch experiences however anything over and above the local soft drinks, house wines and beer will be at additional cost. For alternative lunch options, please speak to your Destination Expert to learn more.

Day 3: Cape Town

The Cape Peninsula is a complete contrast to cosmopolitan Cape Town. With its wild national parks, artistic bohemian seaside villages and working fishing harbors, this day is focused on embracing the locals and spending as much time out of the vehicle as possible. With your specialist guide, head to your first stop – Cape Town’s coolest coffee at Muizenberg’s Surfers Corner, the epicenter of South Africa’s surf culture. From here it’s off to Kalk Bay to explore the harbor and meet the jovial, often entertaining members of the fishing community. Browse bohemian art shops and perhaps take a short hike through the fairy-like Milkwood forests; the day will be curated to your wishes as it progresses with the help of your guide. Head to Simon’s Town to find our rogue penguins on a secret beach that’s typically only accessible to locals. Weather permitting, you’ll be invited to snorkel or use stand-up paddle-boards to gain a unique perspective of the penguins. After visiting Cape Point, venture deeper into the Peninsula and explore deserted wild beaches, secret coves, rock pools and shipwreck-strewn hiking trails away from the tourist crowds. This part of the Table Mountain National Park is home to ostrich, baboons, tortoises and mountain zebra, so be sure to have your camera ready to capture photos of these often elusive animals. The return journey along the Atlantic coast offers countless lookouts, hidden cafes and watering holes that are chock full of character. You’ll experience this firsthand when you stop for a beer tasting at a local surfer hang-out, the final stop before being returned to your hotel after an active day in the Cape Peninsula.

In a place like Cape Town, the surrounding winelands or the Cape Peninsula, nothing beats a picnic. Local flavors and generous portions tailored to your liking are on the highly-personalized menu today; ideal if the weather plays ball and you want to take advantage of the stunning outdoor vistas. Please note: local drinks are included during your lunch experiences however anything over and above the local soft drinks, house wines and beer will be at additional cost. For alternative lunch options, please speak to your Destination Expert to learn more.

Board a flight in Cape Town with service to Nelspruit's Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA). Approximate flight time is one hour and 30 minutes.

Please note, luggage restrictions apply to this regional flight: 1) Maximum of one checked bag, weighing up to 44 lbs (20 kg); Checked baggage cannot be larger than 35”x28”x17” (90cm x 72cm x 45cm). 2) Guests can also bring one piece of carry-on luggage with a maximum weight of 17 lbs (8 kg); carry-on luggage cannot be larger than 22”x13”x9” (56cm x 34cm x 23cm). Guests may also bring one slimline laptop bag.

Transfer from Skukuza Airport en route to your lodge in Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. Transfer time ranges from 15 to 40 minutes based on your arrival camp.

Spectacular, untamed and coveted by outdoor enthusiasts, Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve is revered for good reason; it is one of the best locations in the world to spot game, including the Big 5. On the Sabi, massive elephants roam as families, black and white Rhinoceros graze the grasslands, Cape buffalo cautiously track along riverbeds, leopard’s prowl, and lions roar. Discover this unbound land for yourself as you head out on your first afternoon game drive alongside your ranger, tracker and other guests of the lodge. Explore this incredible land for a few hours with a camera in hand, gaining insights into the region as the sun sets. Before long you will find yourself back at the lodge, just in time to prepare for an outstanding safari dinner under the stars.

Day 7: Sabi Sands

Before first light, gear up and head out to further explore Sabi Sands. Sunrise and sunset are when the animals are most active; in particular, herds of elephants roam the expanses of the Sabi in the morning hours as the glow of dawn radiates. Although the largest living mammal is well-known to most, there is nothing quite like seeing a herd of up to a hundred elephants freely wandering through the open plains; it is sight few people will get to enjoy and that none will forget. After a few hours out in the reserve you will be returned to your lodge for breakfast to enjoy a satisfying and well-earned breakfast.

With the afternoon in full-swing, it is time to head out on an open 4x4 vehicle for another afternoon of game viewing. With the sweltering sun on the decline, nocturnal animals begin their nightly routines. Along well-marked roads or entirely off the beaten path, your tracker will bring you into the heart of the Sabi in search of both predator and prey. On the trail of the king of jungle, perhaps you will be fortunate enough to witness a pride on the hunt. Sit back and relax, always with a hand ready for to snap photos of your favorite animals, as you explore the land for a few hours before returning to camp to freshen up ahead of another incredible dinner.

Day 8: Sabi Sands

As in mornings past, you will rise before the sun to explore the African savannah to head out on another game drive. Sabi Sands is the oldest private game reserve in South Africa. Named for the Sand and Sabie rivers that run through the reserve, it is home to many endangered species such as the wild dog, honey badger, ground hornbill and the oxpecker. Who knows what rare animals you will spot today as you explore the Sabi reserve ahead of another exceptional breakfast?

Following lunch, venture back into the bush. Both the rare Black (hook-lipped) and White (square-lipped) rhinos wander the reserve and the afternoon is fantastic time to spot these powerful, beautiful and endangered creatures. If you are lucky enough, you may spot a crash of rhinos grazing as the sun dips below the horizon. After a few hours, you will return to the lodge to refresh before a freshly-prepared dinner.
