Magnificent historical palaces, the hustle and bustle of colorful cities, camels and elephants, are followed by a change in altitude that will complete your trip on a very high note. A truly entrancing journey, covering memories of the Mughal Empire in Agra, Rajasthan’s magic in Jaipur, finishes deep within the realms of Buddhism in Nepal and Bhutan.

Start in Delhi and experience the chaotic but exhilarating hustle and bustle of Old Delhi. The heart of Old Delhi is a 400-year old tangle of lanes with colorful bazaars, complemented by vibrant temples, the towering minaret of Qutab Minar, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Red Fort.

In the historical center of Jaipur most buildings are painted a terracotta pink, but there’s a lot more color around: the flower markets, turban stalls, brightly painted careering buses, trucks, and even elephants. Stroll around the city’s lively street bazaars and visit the City Palace as well as the Amber Fort, the city’s top attraction, a breathtaking construction of red sandstone and marble.

The Taj Mahal is an exquisite example of Mughal architecture built as a memorial to Mumtaz Mahal, the emperor Sha Jahan’s wife who died in childbirth in 1631. It’s without question one of the most stunningly beautiful places in India.

Then it's off to Kathmandu for a noticeable change in altitude, but be assured once the Himalayas come into view, your spirits are ready to soar. On a scenic flight across its stunning mountain range, some of the world's tallest peaks, even mighty Everest, present themselves in all their rugged glory. Later, investigate the fascinating Nepalese capital on a privately guided tour of the UNESCO-protected palaces, shrines, and temples.

Travellers come to Bhutan to 'Experience Something You Can’t Anywhere Else'. No other nation on the planet has a Gross National Happiness Index, plus a few other things that appear slightly quirky to North Americans. The colorful paintings with their rich and intricate detail on the walls make its capital, Thimpu, one of the most colorful cities in the world. Accompany your private guide to see Thimpu’s most iconic landmark: the Buddha Dordenma Statue, the largest Buddha statue in the world, measuring 170 feet. Your last stop in Bhutan is Paro, and an excursion to the spectacular Taktsang monastery. The building literally clings to the edge of a sheer rock that plunges 3,000 feet into the valley below. Finish the day with a visit to the unique temple Dungtse Lhakhang, considered one of the holiest in the country. It is strikingly peaceful around here, the quietness of the place only broken by the wind and the sound of prayer wheels.

The sprawling fort is 1.5 miles long and ranges in height from 60 to 110 feet. The architecture bears a resemblance to Agra Fort. The creative energy and ingenuity of Jaipur have long been a drawing point of the city, a lasting legacy of skilled craftspeople and artisans. Using skills passed down through generations, artisans and master craftsmen can be seen in the areas of Ghat Darwaza and Vishveshwar ji. Starting in front of the iconic Palace of the Winds, set out on foot with your private guide and spend a colorful evening walking through the city’s bazaars, mingling and chatting with store vendors and locals alike, and sampling some of the region’s notable culinary favorites. Taste pakoras, aloo tiki, samosas and ladoo from a selection of the city’s most popular street food vendors that have been carefully vetted for quality and hygiene standards. Day 4: Jaipur

Meet your private guide and driver at your hotel, and spend the day exploring some of Jaipur’s iconic monuments. Begin the day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the magnificent hilltop Amber Fort, also known as the Amer Fort. Originally established in 1592, Maharaja Man Singh I created the imposing citadel on the remains of an earlier 11th-century Jaigarh Fort, and it remained under the control of Kachhawaha rulers until they moved their capital to nearby Jaipur in 1727.

From here, continue to the City Palace, a breathtaking 18th-century royal residence to the rulers of Jaipur. Wander through the sprawling complex and visit areas that have been converted to a museum illustrating the harmony of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Part of the palace, Chandra Mahal, is the home of the current Maharaja and is off-limits.

After the palace, continue to the adjacent Observatory of Jaipur, known as Jantar Mantar. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the world’s largest sundial. The massive astronomical instruments were built from local stone and marble and is a monument to 18th-century architectural innovations during the Mughal period. End with a visit to the red and pink sandstone Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of the Winds. Jaipur’s iconic monument sits adjacent to the opulent City Palace and is adorned in an ornate pale pink façade with a tiered baroque-like build.  The original design was intended to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life and public festivals in the streets below without being seen, in observance of the strict rules of “purdah”, which forbade them from appearing in public without face coverings. The 953 small windows called “jharokhas” are decorated with intricate latticework and offer spectacular views of the city. At the end of the day, return to your hotel by private vehicle.

Day 13: Punakha

Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and still it is the winter the seat of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). Today, you will begin with a hike up through the fields of rice along the banks of the Mo Chu to the upper end of the valley to see the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning monument recently built by the Queens and consecrated in 1999. Following the hike you will drive towards Khuruthang, passing Punthsho Pelri Palace and several other winter homes of the royal family before reaching the impressive Punakha Dzong. The Dzong was built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative center of the region. Damaged over the centuries by four catastrophic fires and an earthquake, the Dzong has been fully restored in recent years by the present monarch. It is open for visitors during the Punakha festival (early spring) and in the summer months, after the monks body has returned to Thimphu. The Dzong is placed strategically at the junction of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. This ancient fortress is the winter residence of the monastic order’s head and still serves as the administrative headquarters for the Punakha region. A picnic lunch will be served on the banks of the Punak Chu. In the evening, take a relaxing stroll around town.

Nuns or anims are less numerous than monks in Bhutan. There are about 21 nunneries in the country where young nuns learn the rituals and Buddhist texts. They dedicate their lives to religion and provide social services to the local communities. The nuns live within the premises of the temple in a close community (50-100 nuns) and like a family each one of them are assigned daily chores and responsibilities. The local people offer tea to the nuns during the evenings to gain merit and good Karma. Join the nuns during the prayers, reflect on your thoughts and enjoy the serenity and calmness you feel as you listen to the melodious chants.

Day 14: Punakha - Paro

This morning, set off for Paro after an early breakfast and en route visit Semtokha Dzong, “the place of profound tantric teaching”, which stands on a hill a few kilometers out of town. On arrival in Paro, check in at your hotel.

After lunch today, you will visit Ta Dzong, originally built as a watchtower, which now houses Bhutan’s National Museum. The extensive collection includes antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons & armor, household objects and a rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts. Walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dzong, which has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the inner courtyard are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore, such as the legend of the four friends, the old man of long life, the wheel of life, scenes from the life of Milarepa, Mount Sumeru and other cosmic mandalas. Along the way you will also see the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of 108 temples built in the Himalayas by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo. The building of this temple marks the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan. In the evening visit a traditional farmhouse for an opportunity to interact with a local family and gain insight into the local lifestyle and cultures.

Day 15: Paro

Today you will embark on an excursion to view the spectacular and famous Taktsang monastery. The trail to the monastery climbs through beautiful pine forest with many trees festooned with Spanish moss and the occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. The hike will take you past a small cafeteria if a break is needed.  Built in 1600’s, this incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 meters into the valley below. It is believed that, in the 8th century Guru Rimpoche, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, landed here on the back of a flying tigress to subdue a demon. Guru Rimpoche is believed to have meditated here for three months and this place is considered as a ‘Mecca’ for Buddhists. Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. After the hike, you will visit Dungtse Lhakhang. The uniqueness of this temple lies in the fact that it is in the form of a chorten, one of the very few that exists in Bhutan. The lhakhang was built in 1421 by the famous Tibetan lama, Thongten Gyelpo (1385-1465) who was also known as Changzampa or the builder of iron bridges. It is believed that a demoness was terrorizing the Paro valley and the very hill that the temple is built on turned out to be the demoness’s head. So he built a chorten shaped temple over the demoness’s head or the hills to overpower her, as chortens most of the time play the part of a nail that immobilizes a demon. This evening, once back to your hotel, you can take a leisurely guided walk of the town of Paro.

  • Joshua J. — April 09, 2018 — India & Area

This is my third trip with Kensington, and as always, friendly, perfect and terrific from start to finish. The team is tremendous. I recommend Kensington constantly, and cant wait for my next adventure.

  • Dennis P. — February 25, 2018 — India & Area

This trip was one of my bucket list items. Kenny assisted in planning the trip and he was excellent, especially since I modified many things and had many questions. He was always responsive and helpful! He helped ensure I had the best time.

  • Marina P. — January 09, 2018 — India & Area

Absolutely perfect adventure with Kensington! Jennifer helped us map out and plan a wonderful trip to India. Our guides and drivers were excellent!

  • Bonnie Carroll — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

The trip was FABULOUS! We are now loyal Kensington converts - you took care of everything, and each day unfolded with new surprises and adventures! They were made aware (by Kensington??) that it was our shared birthday trip (my 60th!) and so each Oberoi really outdid themselves in doing special birthday celebrations! Wow, amazing! Just overwhelming!

  • Pamela L — August 22, 2017 — India & Area

Everything was great, when we wanted to change something they were very good at doing so. I was more than satisfied. Thanks for a wonderful trip.

  • Bruce Rubin — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

I loved working with Kenny and all the people at Kensington Tours. I loved how easily everything flowed during our journey. Your people were mostly wonderful with a few who simply showed up. We had a few hotel rooms that were less than perfect but in the case of Varanasi I mentioned my displeasure and the room was immediately changed. Many of the hotels were as luxurious as promised and the service was impeccable. We truly loved our trip and would happily use your services again and recommend them to our friends.

  • Renee Martin — August 14, 2017 — India & Area

Really great experience! The quality and the individuality of how our tour was designed was perfect! Would definitely like to do another tour with Kensington!

  • Richard B. — July 15, 2016 — India & Area

Guides and especially drivers were very good, indeed.

  • Alicia H. — June 30, 2016 — India & Area

Each of my guides was absolutely wonderful, making a whirlwind tour feel well-paced and meaningful as well as providing interesting historical/cultural insights and offering excellent shopping and restaurant recommendations. In particular, Sanjil made sure I got all of the best photo angles of the Taj Mahal. Vivek was an amazing story-teller who went above and beyond to make Udaipur come alive, and Indrajeet was an excellent teacher of India's many religions and cultural traditions. The Oberoi hotels were unbelievable; I have never stayed in more luxurious accommodations or experienced more attentive service! This tour was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
