Day 5: Riga

The most valued Latvian drink, black balsam, was first made in Riga in the 18th century. Learn the secrets of this storied herbal spirit on a privately guided walking tour and indulge in a selection of local specialties during a visit to Riga’s Central Market. The legend has it that Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, having fallen ill during her visit to Latvia, was cured after drinking black balsam. The drink is prepared in oak barrels, which allows for development of its characteristic strength and slightly bitter-sweet taste. Savor its fruity aroma and intriguing flavor during a tasting at the characterful Black Magic Bar. Continue with a guided walk through Riga Central Market. The influences of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism can be seen in the architecture of the market complex that was the largest and most advanced European marketplace in the 1930's. You may wish to purchase some of the local specialties on display, such as black bread, honey, cheese, smoked fish and meat. Fish off your experience with a typical Latvian lunch at a local fish tavern.

The Aldaris Beer Museum is housed in a beautifully renovated building on the outskirts of Riga and showcases an authentic brewing hall that has remained unchanged since 1938. Today, learn the secrets of brewing on a privately guided visit to this most modern beer museum in all of the Baltics. Follow the history of the Aldaris Brewery as you see the exhibits of age-old beer bottles, labels and mugs. Discover the main components of beer and find out what makes different types of brews truly unique. You will also get an opportunity to see the old Aldaris brewing hall and get acquainted with the periodic table of 55 most popular beer varieties in the world. Your visit ends with a tasting of some of the Latvian ales.  Upon the conclusion of the tour you will be privately transferred back to your accommodation.

Make your way through the spooky landscape of the bog taking in the sights and sounds of this unique environment. Walk past the undersized pine and birch trees dotting the harsh moorland; learn about the bog creation process from your guide and see the wildlife that resides in the bog ecosystem. Day 7: Riga - Klaipeda

Settle in for a private transfer from Riga to Klaipeda. During your transfer visit Rundale Palace with a local guide located 66 km away of Riga. One of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Latvia, it was built in 1736-1740 as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland, Ernst Johann Biron. The palace was designed by an outstanding Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the creator of the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. The Rundale Palace is one of the few remaining palaces in Latvia, where the very essence of the 18th century may still be experienced. Continue to Hill of Crosses located 12km from Siauliai. It is believed that there was a castle, but it was burned by Sword bearers in 1348. The crosses were mentioned for the first time in written chronicles in 1850, though their appearance is connected with the suppression of the rebellion in 1831. You will then be taken to Klaipeda. Entrance fee to Rundale Palace and French formal garden are included.

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
