A Healthy Dose of History
Step back into history on a captivating full-day tour to Normandy's hallowed D-Day Beaches, where the valor of the Allies during World War II comes to life. June 6, 1944, etched into history as "The Longest Day," is a saga of courage and sacrifice that traces across these iconic shores. Depart from your hotel and embark on a journey through time. First, visit Arromanches, and witness the astonishing remains of the artificial harbor, an ingenious feat of engineering from the Second World War. This site is also home to the D-Day Landing Museum, a repository of remarkable stories and artifacts. Next, your expedition takes you to Omaha Beach, a place etched in history as the site of the most intense fighting during World War II, vividly portrayed in the opening scenes of Steven Spielberg's acclaimed film, "Saving Private Ryan." Here, some 34,000 soldiers from the 1st, 2nd, and 29th Infantry Divisions stormed the beach on D-Day, confronting formidable anti-tank and anti-landing craft obstacles. A poignant finale awaits just over a mile west, at the American Military Cemetery. This serene expanse is the resting place of 9,386 American heroes, their sacrifice a testament to freedom. You can pay homage at the graves of 307 unknown soldiers or visit the final resting sites of more renowned figures, like the Niland brothers, whose remarkable story inspired Spielberg's cinematic masterpiece.

A Journey Back in Time
Embark on a profound full-day expedition, immersing yourself in the pivotal World War II sites where American forces scripted history. Your pilgrimage through hallowed grounds begins at Sainte Mere L'Eglise, the place where more than 16,000 paratroopers made their daring descent on "The Longest Day" to reinforce the seaborne landings. Next, journey to Utah Beach, the very first beach secured by the Allies during the early hours of Operation Overlord. Known for its light casualties and led by the legendary Theodore Roosevelt Jr. this site carries profound historical weight. At La Madeleine, which served as the nerve center for the Utah landings, explore the remnants of German bunkers and a treasure trove of Allied equipment. The next chapter in this journey brings you to Pointe du Hoc, where a formidable German heavy artillery battery posed a significant threat to both Utah Beach in the west and Omaha Beach in the east, where American troops were poised to land. The capture of Pointe du Hoc was a grueling struggle, resulting in significant casualties for the valiant 2nd Battalion. Concluding this solemn expedition is La Cambe, originally one of several temporary American cemeteries. It now stands as the serene resting place for over 21,000 German soldiers who sacrificed their lives following Hitler's command to "Never Retreat, Never Surrender." This journey is a testament to bravery and a reflection on the enduring legacy of the US forces in World War II.

In Remembrance
Gain an understanding of Berlin's troubled and turbulent past on a half day tour focusing on World War II, accompanied by a private guide. Discover the last days of the Third Reich and the site of Hitler's underground bunker, learn about the atrocities of the Holocaust, and uncover Berlin's history during the war. Berlin’s unique history defined the 20th century like no other city. A booming turn-of-the-century metropolis left destitute by the First World War, Berlin led the way in avant-garde art, music and literature throughout the Golden Twenties before Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 made the city the infamous capital of the Third Reich. Divided for occupation by the Allies after World War II, Berlin became the last frontier and flashpoint of the Cold War, symbolized by the jagged scar of the Berlin Wall cutting through the center of the city.
Enjoy one of Berlin’s most acclaimed dining experiences at Michelin-Starred Rutz, where inventive German fine dining is shaped by precision, originality, and an exceptional wine program in Berlin Mitte. Seasonal tasting menus bring together highly refined technique with a distinctly modern expression of regional flavors. Your Destination Expert will gladly arrange a reservation, with the bill settled at the restaurant.

A Healthy Dose of History
Just outside the city limits stands a stark reminder of the worst days in the history of Berlin: Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Built in 1936 by slave laborers, Sachsenhausen became the model that other camps would follow. Many of the guards posted at other concentration camps were trained at this site. By the end of WWII, tens of thousands of people had been slain at Sachsenhausen, and the survivors haunted for life by experiencing the gruesome crimes against humanity committed against them by the SS guards. This tragic history continued from 1945 to 1950, when the new Communist occupiers secretly followed in the footsteps of the Nazis, using the camp to detain political enemies. During this time, 12,000 perished from malnutrition and disease. Visiting the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial is one of the most important things you can do on your visit to Berlin. While here, the story of Sachsenhausen is told with the sensitivity needed to examine how something as horrible as the Holocaust could have ever happened.
