Explore a City of Contrasts
Founded in 1535 as Ciudad de los Reyes, or the City of the Kings, and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, Lima’s history is both fascinating and tumultuous. Discover the Peruvian capital alongside a private guide and driver, beginning with a visit to two of the city’s trendiest barrios, San Isidro and Miraflores. Brimming with modern architecture, world-class restaurants, boutique and brand name retailers, quirky museums and inviting cafÉs, take in impressive views over the Pacific Ocean along an expansive and cliff-side, coastal boardwalk in Miraflores, then stroll through the well-tended parks and promenades of San Isidro. After being privately transferred to the downtown core, find yourself marveling at centuries-old buildings as the past is brought to light, starting with a stop at the Government Palace and City Hall in Plaza Mayor. In the same square, completed in 1774, is the San Francisco Convent. An impressive example of Spanish Baroque architecture, it remains as striking today as it was in the 18th century despite the multiple earthquakes that have shook its foundation. Extensive catacombs underneath the convent host the remains of an estimated 25,000 individuals who were buried prior to the opening of Lima’s city cemetery; a visit to the aged tombs is one you won’t soon forget.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to prepare creative, delicious cocktails from a seasoned bartender and how to pair the appropriate culinary match to your refreshments? Today is your chance! After meeting your private driver you will be taken to Hotel B – one of the city’s premier boutique hotels – where you will meet one of the properties talent bartenders. Heading into the hotel’s lively and ambient bar, you will begin a two hour course where you will learn how to prepare three unique cocktails, as well as the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind suitable pairings. The cocktails on offer change with the season, helping to ensure you enjoy the best seasonal offerings available; for more information on your prospective concoctions, please speak with your Destination Expert.

Sights and Insights
Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the idyllic town of Chinchero would be similar to many other quiet Andean villages that dot the land if not for the bustling open-air market found in the main square. World-famous, this colorful fair operates 7 days a week and is one of the best place in the country to barter for hand-woven dresses and carefully-crafted trinkets, or to simply peruse the seemingly endless wares.
Chinchero is also host to the remains of an Inca wall and an excellent fresco on the portico of the nearby colonial church, both of which will be visited alongside your private guide. Next, head out to see the salt ponds of Maras; in use since the time of the Inca. Capitalizing on a salty spring from a nearby fount, water channels through a series of terraces, funneling into room-sized reservoirs which are eventually closed, allowed to dry, and then harvested for salt. Hundreds of these pools cascade down a single mountainside, each glimmering a pink, yellow or white; it truly an incredible sight. The salt dries pink or white, pending on conditions, and has become a staple in Peru’s finest restaurants. Onward, visit a series of cascading terraces supposedly designed to test how well certain crops grew in varied conditions. An incredible example of early agricultural practices rooted in empirical thought, this area, called Moray, is a fascinating site. Learn about Inca agricultural practices in this incredible landscape before carrying on with your guide and driver to Ollantaytambo Fortress, the last Inca stronghold to resist the Spanish conquistadors. It is an incredible example of Inca military architecture, found on the outskirts of the namesake town in an area known as Temple Hill, and is often the starting point for intrepid hikers heading out on the last leg of the journey to Machu Picchu along the Inca Trail. Lunch at Tunupa, a buffet-style restaurant featuring a range of Novo-Andean cuisine, is included.
Please note: During the rainy season (December to March, approximately), Maras will not be visited as the flats are flooded during this time.
