Once a Decade: Kensington Opens 2030 Oberammergau Passion Play Journeys

Tailor-Made European Itineraries Pair the Landmark Cultural Event with Private Touring and Luxury River Cruises

Four years may seem early to begin planning a European vacation, but when the experience happens only once a decade, early planning matters. Kensington, the leader in luxury private guided travel, has opened reservations for the 2030 Oberammergau Passion Play, giving travelers the opportunity to build a tailor‑made European journey around one of the world's most celebrated and sought after cultural traditions.

Held just once every ten years in the Bavarian village of Oberammergau, the Passion Play brings together more than 2,000 local cast and crew members and draws approximately half a million visitors from around the world. The next season will run from May through October 2030, with demand expected to be high and availability limited.

"The Oberammergau Passion Play is one of those rare experiences where the occasion itself can inspire an entire journey," said Helen Giontsis, President of Kensington. "Because it takes place only once every ten years, travelers have an opportunity to think beyond simply attending the performance and create something truly personal around it whether that's exploring Bavaria and Austria with a private guide, spending time in Salzburg, or pairing the experience with a luxury river cruise along the Danube. Starting early gives us the greatest flexibility to design the journey entirely around the traveler."

Unlike traditional fixed group departures built around predetermined dates, hotels and sightseeing schedules, Kensington's approach allows travelers to experience Oberammergau as part of a fully personalized European itinerary designed around their interests, pace and travel style. Private guides, carefully selected accommodations, seamless transportation and one‑of‑a‑kind experiences can be incorporated before and after the performance, transforming the Passion Play into the centerpiece of a broader European journey.

Among Kensington's featured 2030 journeys is A Danube River Journey with Oberammergau's Passion Play, which combines the landmark performance with a luxury cruise along one of Europe's most storied waterways. The itinerary offers an effortless way to experience the Passion Play while incorporating the culture, history and scenery of Central Europe into a single journey.

Another option, Rhine River Cruise: Passion Play, combines a private land journey with a seven‑night Rhine River cruise from France to Bavaria. Beginning in Paris, the journey brings centuries of European history and architecture to life, from the medieval grandeur of Mont Saint‑Michel and Joan of Arc's legacy in Rouen to the Gothic cathedrals of Paris and Cologne and Strasbourg's UNESCO‑listed historic center. Along the Rhine, travelers experience the storied cities, landscapes and cultural traditions that have shaped the region before continuing to Bavaria for the Oberammergau Passion Play, creating a journey that places the once‑a‑decade performance within the wide range of cultural attractions in Europe.

For travelers who prefer to explore entirely by land, Bavaria to Salzburg with the Oberammergau Passion Play places the performance at the heart of a privately guided journey through the region. Travelers can discover Bavaria's landscapes, historic towns and cultural traditions before continuing into Austria and Salzburg, with Kensington tailoring the experience to each client's individual interests.

A Tradition Nearly 400 Years in the Making

First performed in 1634, the Oberammergau Passion Play is a large‑scale theatrical production depicting the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, staged once every decade by residents of the Bavarian village.

Today, the production remains deeply rooted in the Oberammergau community, with local residents participating as actors, musicians, singers and members of the production team. Its combination of history, tradition, scale and rarity has made Passion Play a bucket‑list cultural experience for travelers from around the world.

With performances limited to a single season every decade, Kensington is encouraging travelers interested in attending in 2030 to begin planning well in advance, particularly those seeking specific dates, preferred accommodations or a more extensive tailor‑made European itinerary.

Reservations and journey planning for the 2030 Oberammergau Passion Play season, May through October 2030, are now open through Kensington.
