What to Pack for an African Safari

So you are going on an African safari! Preparing to try something new is always an exciting endeavor, but figuring out what to pack can be a little bit overwhelming. You need to consider the weather, the culture, and the activities for a trip you’ve never taken. It's important to pack the right things to keep you comfortable during your African safari so you can spend your time focusing on the important things - like spotting elusive wildlife and enjoying one of the most exciting adventures you’ll ever go on. Safari clothing recommendations

Going on a safari means you’ll be outdoors and facing the elements both in your vehicle and in your safari tent or lodge. It’s important to be prepared for both hot and cool weather which means dressing in layers is key. Stick with fabrics that are made for fitness and yoga as they tend to be more breathable and have moisture-wicking properties. When choosing colors, go with more neutral and subdued hues. Bright colors may deter animals and dark colors may attract insects.

• Wind-resistant rain jacket with a hood. Make sure it doesn’t fit too tight so you can add layers underneath.

• Fitted fleece jacket or a thermal running jacket as a warm layer.

• Long sleeve layers to add warmth in the early mornings and chilly evenings. A chambray button down and long sleeve jersey are good options.

• Shorts and trousers. Whichever is the most comfortable for you to wear is what you should bring. Avoid jeans and 100% cotton pants.

• A wide-brimmed hat that covers your ears and the back of your neck and can keep your head cool under the sun.

• Quick-dry socks to keep your feet from shriveling in the heat. Merino wool and bamboo fibers are great for their moisture-wicking and odor resistant abilities.

• Sneakers and sandals that are well worn-in and comfortable to wear from safari to beach.

• Multi-function headband to add some variety to your outfit, to add warmth, and to cover your mouth and nose from the dust.

Safari gear recommendations

To enhance your experience and be prepared when you’re out on the Savannah, these items will make your trip more enjoyable.

• Heavy-duty insect repellent. You can also spray your clothes with a clothing repellent.

• Travel Adapter specific to the region. South African adapters are not always included in the Universal ones.

• Portable charger to keep your devices juiced up.

• Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), after­sun lotion, lip balm to stay safe under the hot African sun.

• Anti­nausea tablets if you suffer from motion sickness.

• Antihistamine tablets for possible allergies.

• Day-sized backpacks are highly recommended for carrying small items such as your camera, water bottle, and rain gear.

• Camera with extra batteries and memory cards for taking pictures during your game drives.
