Day 13: Bwindi

Bwindi's “impenetrable forest” protects an estimated 400 mountain gorillas – roughly half of the world’s population, including several habituated groups. The gorillas are completely wild but have become used to seeing a few humans after years of habituation. Many of the expert guides have been involved in this process since the beginning and are able to explain the complicated etiquette involved in meeting a giant silverback. This is an opportunity afforded only to a select few, as just eight visitors are allowed to view each group every day.

Wake up very early and depart with a picnic lunch to track the rare Mountain Gorillas (hiking boots required). The tracking may take between 5 and 8 hours in and out of the forest. Tracking through dense forest with steep slopes means that participants do need to be physically fit to enjoy the track. The Park Guides with you interpret the flora and fauna and the lifestyle of the Gorillas. Once the gorillas are located, spend a maximum of one hour with them before returning back to camp for dinner and overnight at the lodge.

*Please note only children aged 15 and above can track gorilla.

Ishasha Wildnerness Camp: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Ishasha Wilderness Camp is situated inside the Southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park on the Ntungwe River, and is an idyllic retreat for people who truly enjoy the wilderness. This exclusive camp offers quality accommodation and services in this unspoilt remote southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park famous for its tree climbing lions that can sometimes be spotted resting in the branches of the large fig trees in the area.  Each of the spacious framed canvas rooms, situated in the wooded area besides the river, is comfortably furnished and with large mosquito netted beds, its own private en suite bathroom and dressing area providing running water, hot water ‘bush’ showers and a flushing eco-friendly toilet.  A central lounge and dining area, under a cool thatched roof, provides a comfortable environment for meals and relaxing during the day. A shaded area beside the river offers al fresco dining and an evening ‘fireplace’ for guests to relax with sundowners and share their day’s experience.  Meals are freshly prepared with many local ingredients, offering a balance of international and locally flavoured cuisine with all meals being of several delicious courses.  The bar has a selection of local and imported beverages and friendly local staff will attend to your needs.  As the camp is within the National Park, we have designed it to be as low impact as possible with low usage of water, power and other resources. Solar power is used for lighting with power points limited to a central area allocated for recharging cameras and videos.

My Kenya trip was seriously the best trip of my life, and I absolutely loved every second of it! It was my dream vacation and the reality far exceeded the dream. Catherine, my trip consultant, answered all of my many questions and made sure everything went super smoothly. Daniel, my guide, was so fun, interesting, and informative. He went out of his way to make sure my trip was special. I really can't put into words how much I loved it other than I'm already thinking about another trip to Africa. I will definitely be using Kensington Tours again!

Our guide Elisha was absolutely incredible! He was friendly, helpful, funny, and remarkably knowledgeable about the area, the animals, and especially the birds! The accommodations were excellent and the staff at those places was wonderful. The Kubu Kubu tent camp in Serengeti was particularly special, and we felt truly appreciated and pampered by the staff. With their smiling help, we even learned some Swahili! Thank you for the trip of a lifetime.

We had no idea what to expect on this trip but exceeded even our wildest imagination. Daniel, with Kensington, laid out a wonderful plan. The upfront quality and detail on the proposal really sold us. The guides and local support crews on the trip, were on time, personable, and knowledgeable. Special shout out to Shamiel with Ilios Travel in Cape Town. He was joy and clearly loved sharing Cape Town with us.

Karen Johnson was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and very friendly. Karen was readily available during the planning process and took the time to talk with and listen to us to find out about our wants and needs and ultimately designed our perfect vacation. We can not speak highly enough about her abilities.

  • Michael S — June 13, 2019 — Africa

The trip was the best thing we have ever done. The people we dealt with were professional and made sure every part of our trip was trouble free.

  • Raymond D — March 22, 2019 — Africa

The guides were friendly and very accommodating throughout my trip. One of the guides took me to the oldest tea house as a bonus on my tour. It was great being with the people and enjoying a cup of tea. My driver invited me to have Turkish coffee which was a very nice touch to my trip. The accommodations were phenomenal, being near the pyramids was outside of this world. The Kempinski Nile Hotel Garden City Cairo was a wonderful hotel as well. Gesa was great to work with! She was so nice and accommodating throughout the whole planning process. Especially during for the first part of my trip which had nothing to do with my tours with Kensington Tours. She planned everything out perfectly on my trip.

  • Donna M — June 02, 2019 — Africa

The Kensington Kenya and Tanzania African Safari itinerary and experience exceeded all expectations. From the moment we were met at the airport, we were completely cared for. Our Destination Expert, Erin Cotton, even checked in on us during the trip. Our guides were excellent; Albert and Steve were exceptionally knowledgeable, organized and considerate. The accommodations were all fantastic with friendly staff, comfortable rooms for the family, and great food. Although the balloon trip over the Mara River was a highlight, each game drive was a memorable adventure as or guides toured Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and the Masai Mara. We got to spend some time in the local villages and dine with some of the other tourists in the middle of the bush and on a spectacular cliff overlooking the plains of Kenya and Tanzania. Most of all, every morning we looked forward to spending time with our guides searching for animals and learning more about the whole ecosystem.

Everything was absolutely wonderful - from the planning to the execution. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Will definitely work with Kensington on my next trip! (I'm headed to Hong Kong this December and think I should probably do some exploring while I'm there!)

  • Jennifer W — December 04, 2018 — Africa

Our trip was amazing! The accommodations were lovely. Our safari guide made the experience memorable! Our only job was to relax and enjoy. The guide for our day in Sawato and to visit the Apartheid museum was extremely knowledgeable. This is our second trip with Kensington Tours. We will definitely use again.

  • Tanya R — February 20, 2019 — Africa

We left everything to our tour rep, Louise Baer. She did a fantastic job. We had no expectations at all but were absolutely overwhelmed with our accommodations. We were treated so well by everyone. It was an unbelievable trip of a lifetime. Our drivers were fantastic. I felt so safe. Brilliant holiday. Thank you, Kensington!
