Yes, Cambodia is home to Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious complex and one of the most impressive structures ever built by human hands. But it is also much, much more; a magical landscape of ancient ruins, fascinating creatures, mist-shrouded mountains, and potent peppers that have become the darling of the culinary world. Venture deep into the dynamic cities and gorgeous countryside of this elusive Southeast Asian country to learn its stories, from the dawn of time through its troubling recent past to today, where the future, finally, looks bright.

This fascinating Explorers Club Collection itinerary tells the tale of Cambodia’s history through the ages, from ancient times through the dark chapters of the recent past and into a bright future that’s still being written. It begins in Phnom Penh, the ever-evolving capital where tradition and modernity collide. Near the banks of the Mekong, you’ll explore the city’s oldest market, marvel at the colonial architecture of French Quarter, and visit the enormous Wat Phnom pagoda before sobering encounters at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Genocidal Center (the infamous Killing Fields). Beyond the capital, other secrets await. You’ll meet sun bears and Asian black bears (moon bears) at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Centre, explore the fascinating islands off the coast of Kep, visit a plantation where Kampot peppers are grown, spend the night high up in the Cardamom Mountains at an exclusive tented camp and learn about the wildlife protection efforts here. The journey concludes in Siem Reap, gateway to Angkor, the Khmer “City of God-Kings.” Here, you’ll walk the grounds of the world’s largest religious complex with a local archaeologist who will merge legend with fact as you visit famous temples like Bayon, Baphuon, Preah Khan, and others. Later, get a glimpse of the massive temple complex from the sky courtesy of a special microflight (subject to local permission), see the staggering collection of statues preserved inside the Angkor Conservation Center, and (of course) capture the postcard-perfect sight of the evening sun setting over the temple’s spires from the quiet confines of Pre Rup.

Day 2: Phnom Penh

Today is an early morning start (8:00AM) and your private guide will pick you up at your hotel for a tour that is partially on foot, as well as tuk tuks. First stop is at the Pshar Kandal, Phnom Pen's oldest market, to enjoy delicacies such as fried noodles, BBQ beef with papaya salad, noodle soup, and delicious rice and coconut treats. Then it’s a walk to the French Quarter, which will open your eyes to Phnom Penh's colonial era architecture. Admire Belle Epoque and Art Deco design, a train station built during colonial times as wells as the Buddhist Temple, Wat Phnom, the tallest religious structure in the city. A true landmark in the city is Psah Thmey, once known as the biggest market in Asia. You'll have a chance to meet a traditional fortune teller (Optional: $5 USD), and taste a variety of  local snacks. To quench your thirst, try a refreshing Teuk Ampil, a popular drink consisting of sugar cane juice poured over ice. After touring the market, a tuk tuk will take you back to your hotel.

In the afternoon, learn about Cambodia's devastating history, visiting the notorious Tuol Sleng Prison, housed in a high school, and glimpse the horrors that prevailed during Cambodia's ultra-radical Marxist movement. This excursion may prove distressing for some; it is, however, an important piece of Cambodia’s recent past. Afterwards, take an excursion to Choeng Ek, site of former orchards where more than 17,000 civilians were killed and buried in mass graves by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 - 1979. Known as the "Killing Fields," it is located around 10 miles outside of Phnom Penh. This private tour includes tuk tuk transfers, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees, food, cool water and towels.

Day 5: Kep - Cardamom Mountains

Depart to Trapeang Rung district, Koh Kong Province which is about a 3.5 hour drive from Kep. Along the way, take the opportunity to visit the Kampot Pepper Plantation. Pepper production is currently resurging as top chefs around the world have rediscovered the uniqueness of Kampot Pepper. As one of the region's main agricultural products, the pepper plantation has found itself high on many travelers lists. Afterward, continue to Koh Kong Coffee; stop and enjoy a light meal en route (on own account). Freshen up at the lodge’s lounge in Trapeang Rung before embarking on the hour’s trip over the Preak Tachan River to Cardamom Tented Camp and settle into the comfortable safari-style tents.

When staying at Cardamom Tented Camp, one of the best ways to learn about the local wildlife, nature, and external influences threatening the park – such as illegal logging, poaching and habitat destruction – is by jungle hiking along the park’s trails. Take the opportunity to visit Preak Tachan Station on a 2.5-hour forest hike with Forest Rangers!

Accommodation: Cardamom Tented Camp (D)

The eco-camp is equipped with nine comfortable safari-style tents located inside Botum Sakor National Park that minimize the human footprint on nature and promote sustainable tourism. Day 7: Cardamom Mountains - Sihanoukville - Siem Reap

Board the boat back to Trapeang Rung where a private driver will be waiting to transfer you to Sihanoukville Airport for a domestic flight to Siem Reap.

Fly from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap. Flight time is approximately 50 minutes.

You will be privately transferred between the airport and your hotel by a professional driver and an English-speaking guide.

Soar high above the temples of Angkor, Tonle Sap Lake and the surrounding countryside of the Siem Reap area. Take a flight with Captain Eddie, a highly experienced American pilot with thousands of flight hours in the Cambodian skies aboard his British-made Quik GT-450 microlight. This special and unique experience allows you to experience the temples and surrounding area “slow and low”, averaging around 100 km/hour and sometimes flying as low as 10 meters above ground. Microlight flights allow you to be open to the elements and truly experience Siem Reap from above, up close and personal.

Accommodation: Phum Baitang Resort

Phum Baitang, the ’green village’, is a luxury resort near Siem Reap in Cambodia, gateway to the Angkor World Heritage Site and numerous natural wonders and cultural experiences. For elegant dining, Phum Baitang’s two restaurants, one locally-inspired and the other offering international cuisine, serve delicious meals using fresh organic herbs and vegetables from the resort’s own gardens. Day 8: Siem Reap

Angkor Archeological Park is as visually breathtaking as it is revered for its religious and archaeological significance. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the complex was home to the largest pre-industrial city in the world. Stretching some 150 square miles, the park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire. You could spend weeks exploring the ruins, but today seize the opportunity to see the top highlights. With a local archaeologist and private English-speaking guide, visit the South Gate of Angkor Thom where you may take an optional walk along the wall to a hidden temple. Next visit the temples of Bayon, Baphoun and Terrace of Elephants, The Leper King and Preah Khan. Bayon is a favorite with photographers, with a multitude of smiling, serene faces carved out of the rock, each one unique. Centuries of Hindu and Buddhist influence have left their imprint on the temples of Baphoun, Terrace of Elephants and The Leper King, each with their own unique design and relief carvings depicting tales from both religions. Visit the famous jungle temple of Ta Phrom. The temple is slowly being reclaimed by the jungle, with strangler fig trees growing over the remains of the complex, giving Ta Phrom a surreal atmosphere. Next, explore Preah Khan. The temple has been left largely unrestored and untamed vegetation grows among the ruins. Adorned with garudas, an eagle-like divine being, the temple has significant Hindu and Buddhist religious symbols. Take a break for lunch at Malis restaurant and afterwards, visit the Angkor Conservation Center, constructed in 1920 to house original Khmer sculptures. The Ministry of Culture now runs the center and strictly controls access, which is not open to the public. This is a special access visit to a compound that houses more than 5,000 statues protected from wanton looting that has blighted hundreds of sites around Angkor. The finest are saved and hidden away inside Angkor Conservation’s warehouses, meticulously numbered and cataloged. End the day by visiting the ultimate Cambodian temple. Angkor Wat is one of mankind’s greatest achievements, and the intricate carvings at the temple of Angkor Wat demonstrate the skill of the Khmer builders. It was constructed in the early 12th century, then - two centuries later - was mysteriously abandoned by the Khmer civilization. Now Angkor Wat is the main reason tourists visit Cambodia. Finish the tour with an unforgettable sunset on the quiet east side of Angkor Wat or at Pre Rup Temple.

  • Tin T — June 22, 2019 — Asia

The trip was fantastic, well planned, great tour guys. That was a trip of a lifetime and Kensington Tours had done an exceptional well in organizing from the fly to Japan, Hong Kong, Bali & Singapore to the hotels, daily tours with the level of details and places we wouldn't have known where to go. Can't wait for Kensington Tours to organize our 3rd trip in the near future!

  • Ann M — June 20, 2019 — Asia

Asia Expert Yuki Ng did an amazing job of setting up our trip. She totally understood what we wanted to see and do. My husband, 17-year-old grandson and I spent a week in Seoul in June of 2019. Miriam, also known as CJ, our local guide in Seoul, was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. We totally enjoyed our time with her. We learned so much about the history and culture of Korea and with her expert guidance, we were introduced to many different and delicious Korean foods. Our lunches with her were memorable not only for the variety of restaurants and dishes that we sampled but also for the stimulating and pleasant conversations we shared while eating. She also made several suggestions for things to do in the evening that added to our enjoyment of the city. We were truly fortunate to have Miriam as our guide. Our driver Mr. Jo was also great. He calmly and expertly navigated the congested streets of Seoul and always greeted us with a smile and a pleasant ‘good morning.’ We had not been to Seoul before this trip. We found it to be vibrant, beautiful, and very clean. The people were friendly and helpful. Our accommodations were beyond what we expected. We had a wonderful time in Seoul. We could not have been more pleased.

  • Anne H — May 28, 2019 — Asia

My trip was a dream come true! From the time I landed in Beijing to the time I landed back to the US, everything was perfect. I traveled alone, but felt very safe and very well taken care of by the guides and drivers I had in the different cities and countries I visited. I learned so much about the culture and heritage of the Chinese, Tibetan and the Nepalese people. It was worth every penny I spend and much more!

  • Jackie M — March 30, 2019 — Asia

I loved it all. Thanks especially to our guide Abit, in Kathmandu, Norenda, in Pokhara, and Min, in the Annapurna region, for being fabulous people. Thanks again for also referring us to Bahari Lodge in Chitwan National park. By far, that was the best place I've ever stayed in all of my international travels: they always had a surprise in store for us, that was awesome. They let us spend as much time as we wanted with the elephants, no rush, and sent elephants to come and play with us when we merely mentioned that we loved them. A great thank you to our naturalis Krishna at Bahari Lodge in Chitwan. All fantastic people who were great with tourists like us. We also enjoyed Temple Tree Resort very much.

  • Reginald B — April 14, 2019 — Asia

This was a GREAT tour to Thailand! It exceeded my expectations in many ways (ie. itinerary, flexibility, and customer service). I would recommend this tour and Kensington Tours to family and friends. I will definitely use Kensington Tours for my future travel plans. My destination expert was Ms. Forkan. She expertly tailored my experience to my needs and wants. She filled in all the "unknowns" and ensured a safe, smooth trip/tour. Her professionalism and support was a 10/10. Thank you Ms. Forkan for designing this trip of a lifetime!

  • Ann L — June 05, 2019 — Asia

Our guides made our whole trip - we will remember them as much as China itself. Jerry immediately put us at ease and made us feel like his best friends - he was sincere and authentic and open. Katy (in Chengdu) had great energy and showed us how people really live. Even though she must see the pandas every other day of her life, she still seemed to genuinely LOVE seeing them. (And, later, when we discovered we'd left valuables in the safe at our hotel, she went WAY above and beyond to take care of things - even after we were already in Shanghai!). Nancy (in Shanghai) was amazing - we truly enjoyed our time with her and she took us to markets and encouraged us to take our time at the places that interested us most. When we'd seen enough temples, our guides communicated with each other to rearrange our tours in coming destinations. We felt like we were on the food tour of China - the meals were wonderful, and it was - really - TOO MUCH FOOD! No part of our day was wasted, but if we wanted to start later or call it a night sooner, plans were easily rearranged. We would absolutely go with Kensington again!

  • Sandra S — February 09, 2019 — Asia

We had a really interesting trip and your team made it all so easy. Our guides were not only informative, but they took very good care of us. They kept us on schedule with all the city transfers, made the Visa process so quick and introduced us to some of the things they loved about their cities as well as the scheduled sites. There were so many highlights on this trip, but I was especially wowed by the cruise on Ha Long Bay. Our guide in Hanoi went above and beyond on my birthday and arrived to pick us up with some beautiful orchids and a lovely gift. We were very happy with all our accommodations as well.

  • Daryl H. — January 26, 2019 — Asia

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the superb attention to detail in fulfilling my requests and my dreams

  • Laura E. — January 08, 2019 — Asia

One of the benefits was that the guides were very flexible and suggested and accommodated changes to plans based on the weather and other circumstances. They all said they could do this when working with Kensington because Kensington supported it and empowered them with this flexibility. A big advantage in making the trip perfect!

  • Ajitkumar P. — January 04, 2019 — Asia

The whole trip was well organized and we have recommended using Kensington to our friends.
