Kathmandu is the capital of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,350 meters in the bowl-shaped valley in central Nepal surrounded by four major mountains, namely: Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri. The city rich history is nearly 2000 years old, as inferred from an inscription in the valley its religious affiliations are dominantly Hindu followed by Buddhism. People of other religious beliefs also live in Kathmandu giving it a cosmopolitan culture. Nepali is the common language of the city.  Kathmandu Durbar Square is home to palaces, temples and courtyards. The word “durbar” means “palace” and Nepal’s kings used to live here and rule from the Hanuman Dhoka Palace until the construction of the Nararayanhiti Royal Palace.  Kathmandu Durbar Square is presently known as Hanuman Dhoka, a name derived from the statue of Hanuman, the monkey devotee of Lord Ram, near the entrance of the palace. Many of the palaces and temples in Durbar Square were built during the reign of the Malla Kings (1200 to 1768) and are beautiful examples of Newari Architecture, Nepal’s most distinctive architectural style. Visitors to the Durbar Square of Kathmandu will be amazed by the architectural wonders spanning several centuries. This important historical attraction has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are more than a dozen buildings and statues of note in this small area. They include: Kasthamandap – the wooden building that is said to have given the city of Kathmandu its name , Taleju Temple -one of the oldest temples in the square, this three-roofed temple with its pyramid shaped bases, is an example of the typical Newari architectural style. Kumari Ghar- home of "the Kumari", or living goddess, Shiva-Parvati Temple, Kal Bhairab etc.  Swoyambhunath: Swayam in Sanskrit mean self, hence  Swoyambhunath mean “Self-Created One”. The Tibetan name for Swoyambhunath means 'Sublime Trees’. It was built over 2,500 years ago. It is also known as monkey temple as there are holy monkeys living in part of the temple. The site is about 70 meters above on the west side hill of Kathmandu and 3 kilometers from City centre. An excellent view of Kathmandu valley can be observed from this UNESCO World heritage cultural site. This Buddhist Stupa holds a special position both among the Buddhists & Hindus.

Day 12: Paro

Today you will embark on an excursion to view the spectacular and famous Taktsang monastery. The trail to the monastery climbs through beautiful pine forest with many trees festooned with Spanish moss and the occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. The hike will take you past a small cafeteria if a break is needed.  Built in 1600’s, this incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 meters into the valley below. It is believed that, in the 8th century Guru Rimpoche, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, landed here on the back of a flying tigress to subdue a demon. Guru Rimpoche is believed to have meditated here for three months and this place is considered as a ‘Mecca’ for Buddhists. Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. After the hike, you will visit Dungtse Lhakhang. The uniqueness of this temple lies in the fact that it is in the form of a chorten, one of the very few that exists in Bhutan. The lhakhang was built in 1421 by the famous Tibetan lama, Thongten Gyelpo (1385-1465) who was also known as Changzampa or the builder of iron bridges. It is believed that a demoness was terrorizing the Paro valley and the very hill that the temple is built on turned out to be the demoness’s head. So he built a chorten shaped temple over the demoness’s head or the hills to overpower her, as chortens most of the time play the part of a nail that immobilizes a demon. This evening, once back to your hotel, you can take a leisurely guided walk of the town of Paro.

We had an amazing experience. Our guides in Agra and Delhi were excellent. We had a wonderful driver who was with us from Dehli to Agra, and again in Agra and Delhi. We felt well taken care of with all the greeters and assistants at every step of our journey. We felt safe and well cared for from the pick up at the cruise terminal in Mangalore until our drop off at the door of the cruise terminal in Mumbai. I have already recommended Kensington to all the jealous fellow cruisers on our ship, and many times since our first Kensington tour in Africa. You never disappoint!

What an organized, well put together company! From the moment I reached out online to the last minute details even a day or two before our trip, Kensington took care of my every need and created the perfect itinerary, with attention to every single detail. My main destination expert, Katie was absolutely incredible, capturing our most favorite interests and activities in this trip. She listened to me, asked for my preferences and priorities and passions and put together the most fabulous trip that was personalized just for us! She even incorporated personal time for us to spend with family as part of the itinerary. From the moment we got off the plane to the moment we boarded our return flight back home we were never left to struggle and we were well cared for throughout the entire 2 week trip. My local Kensington contact Chhaya was also wonderful, periodically checking on me by phone to ensure that our every need was met. The company situated every detail of our trip and we felt well cared for and situated in every town we visited. It was an incredible experience that we will remember forever and I will always seek Kensington for our experiential trips around the world. Thank you for an absolutely phenomenal journey Kensington!

The Kensington experience was beyond professional. We were treated like VIPs everywhere we went. I have never been treated so well on any trip before. Their attention to detail is excellent and responsive to our last minute changes was greatly appreciated. Thank you for the trip of a lifetime to India.

We were extremely pleased with the careful attention to service details by Kensington and its representatives. After seeing large tour buses of tourists on our India trip, we appreciate even more the value of small and nimble groups. The guides and driver were first-rate and were willing to accommodate minor changes to the schedule to fit our interests.

  • Sandra A — January 31, 2019 — India & Area

Everyone was wonderful to work with. The trip was wonderful, and we learned so much about history and culture. The drivers and guides were great! The best thing was that we never felt out of touch. Sagrika Bisht was lovely and always available. She provided us with her contact details and checked up on us throughout the trip to ensure we were enjoying ourselves. Our driver, Pyar was wonderful and always there for us. He made us feel very safe on the busy streets. We always felt KT was there with us overseeing everything. The welcome gift prepared was lovely and Laura did a great job planning. She helped pick out things to do and see and we truly appreciate her!

  • Elizabeth P. — January 28, 2019 — India & Area

The trip overall exceeded our expectations! The organization, tours, guides, and accommodations were all very good.

  • Kenneth D. — January 19, 2019 — India & Area

Jennifer May did a fantastic job in preparing the logistics for our almost month long trip to India and Sri Lanka. Everything went smoothly without any problems. The hotels were great as were the itinerary and the guides.

  • Margarita C. — June 24, 2018 — India & Area

Melissa Stankovich, our Destination Expert, was excellent from beginning to end. Courteous, knowledgeable, and prompt with her responses to our queries.

  • Glendora P. — June 26, 2018 — India & Area

The most outstanding personnel for our trip to India was Jaggi the driver. He was professional, warm and very accommodating. The guide in Jaipur was also first rate.

  • Karen K. — January 15, 2019 — India & Area

Kensington and Mark, our Destination Expert, did a fantastic job and I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone as well as use them again. Thank you Mark for a great trip!
