Kathmandu is the capital of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,350 meters in the bowl-shaped valley in central Nepal surrounded by four major mountains, namely: Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri. The city rich history is nearly 2000 years old, as inferred from an inscription in the valley its religious affiliations are dominantly Hindu followed by Buddhism. People of other religious beliefs also live in Kathmandu giving it a cosmopolitan culture. Nepali is the common language of the city.  Kathmandu Durbar Square is home to palaces, temples and courtyards. The word “durbar” means “palace” and Nepal’s kings used to live here and rule from the Hanuman Dhoka Palace until the construction of the Nararayanhiti Royal Palace.  Kathmandu Durbar Square is presently known as Hanuman Dhoka, a name derived from the statue of Hanuman, the monkey devotee of Lord Ram, near the entrance of the palace. Many of the palaces and temples in Durbar Square were built during the reign of the Malla Kings (1200 to 1768) and are beautiful examples of Newari Architecture, Nepal’s most distinctive architectural style. Visitors to the Durbar Square of Kathmandu will be amazed by the architectural wonders spanning several centuries. This important historical attraction has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are more than a dozen buildings and statues of note in this small area. They include: Kasthamandap – the wooden building that is said to have given the city of Kathmandu its name , Taleju Temple -one of the oldest temples in the square, this three-roofed temple with its pyramid shaped bases, is an example of the typical Newari architectural style. Kumari Ghar- home of "the Kumari", or living goddess, Shiva-Parvati Temple, Kal Bhairab etc.  Swoyambhunath: Swayam in Sanskrit mean self, hence  Swoyambhunath mean “Self-Created One”. The Tibetan name for Swoyambhunath means 'Sublime Trees’. It was built over 2,500 years ago. It is also known as monkey temple as there are holy monkeys living in part of the temple. The site is about 70 meters above on the west side hill of Kathmandu and 3 kilometers from City centre. An excellent view of Kathmandu valley can be observed from this UNESCO World heritage cultural site. This Buddhist Stupa holds a special position both among the Buddhists & Hindus.

Day 12: Paro

Today you will embark on an excursion to view the spectacular and famous Taktsang monastery. The trail to the monastery climbs through beautiful pine forest with many trees festooned with Spanish moss and the occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. The hike will take you past a small cafeteria if a break is needed.  Built in 1600’s, this incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 meters into the valley below. It is believed that, in the 8th century Guru Rimpoche, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, landed here on the back of a flying tigress to subdue a demon. Guru Rimpoche is believed to have meditated here for three months and this place is considered as a ‘Mecca’ for Buddhists. Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. After the hike, you will visit Dungtse Lhakhang. The uniqueness of this temple lies in the fact that it is in the form of a chorten, one of the very few that exists in Bhutan. The lhakhang was built in 1421 by the famous Tibetan lama, Thongten Gyelpo (1385-1465) who was also known as Changzampa or the builder of iron bridges. It is believed that a demoness was terrorizing the Paro valley and the very hill that the temple is built on turned out to be the demoness’s head. So he built a chorten shaped temple over the demoness’s head or the hills to overpower her, as chortens most of the time play the part of a nail that immobilizes a demon. This evening, once back to your hotel, you can take a leisurely guided walk of the town of Paro.

The trip was FABULOUS! We are now loyal Kensington converts - you took care of everything, and each day unfolded with new surprises and adventures! They were made aware (by Kensington??) that it was our shared birthday trip (my 60th!) and so each Oberoi really outdid themselves in doing special birthday celebrations! Wow, amazing! Just overwhelming!

Everything was great, when we wanted to change something they were very good at doing so. I was more than satisfied. Thanks for a wonderful trip.

I loved working with Kenny and all the people at Kensington Tours. I loved how easily everything flowed during our journey. Your people were mostly wonderful with a few who simply showed up. We had a few hotel rooms that were less than perfect but in the case of Varanasi I mentioned my displeasure and the room was immediately changed. Many of the hotels were as luxurious as promised and the service was impeccable. We truly loved our trip and would happily use your services again and recommend them to our friends.

Really great experience! The quality and the individuality of how our tour was designed was perfect! Would definitely like to do another tour with Kensington!

Guides and especially drivers were very good, indeed.

Each of my guides was absolutely wonderful, making a whirlwind tour feel well-paced and meaningful as well as providing interesting historical/cultural insights and offering excellent shopping and restaurant recommendations. In particular, Sanjil made sure I got all of the best photo angles of the Taj Mahal. Vivek was an amazing story-teller who went above and beyond to make Udaipur come alive, and Indrajeet was an excellent teacher of India's many religions and cultural traditions. The Oberoi hotels were unbelievable; I have never stayed in more luxurious accommodations or experienced more attentive service! This tour was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Mahipal, our driver for 10 days, was absolutely excellent. My wife has had 3 previous neck surgeries, and cannot ride in a bumpy vehicle. Mahipal was careful to make our travel as smooth as humanly possible. Thank you! Sunita Singh was excellent in arranging everything we needed, as well as our driver.

The choice of hotels and the guides selected for each city were very knowledgeable. We especially liked Rotan in Jodhpur, Gowinda in Jaipur, Iqbal in Agra and Mr Satya Gupta in Deli. They were all very patient, humorous, and happened to be willing photographers. They even made restaurant suggestions for local places outside the hotel. Great versatility. Our driver, Mr. Ronnert Singh, navigated those tough Indian roads safely and flawlessly. We've taken a few tours but quite frankly Kensington was one of the best.

The pacing was well thought out. It's about as easy as you will ever do, i think, touring for a month in India. The Oberoi Hotels were uniformly excellent.

Just arrived back from a spectacular 13-day visit to Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. Sunita Singh of Kensington put together a perfect itinerary to give us a taste of Indian sights, sounds, people and culture and the hotel bookings exceeded our expectations. Everywhere we went we were met by the local Kensington representatives, who more than handled any request we came up with. We felt well cared for throughout the trip. The local guides selected by the local Kensington representatives were knowledgeable about their home city and they were very flexible and accommodating in seeking to make the trip special. Since we were driven in a private van from Udaipur to Jodhpur to Jaipur to Agra and back to Delhi, we could not have been in better hands. Our driver was spectacular. The trip was a success and we could not be happier. Thank you Kensington for a very special trip.
