A Walk Through the Past
A historic city renowned for its universities, baroque architecture and romantic appeal, Heidelberg is a spectacular place. Found in the shadows of Heidelberg Castle, set out on a walking tour of the historic city center, or altstadt, alongside a private guide. Wind your way past the old stone bridge – constructed in the late 18th century – toward the Church of the Holy Spirit, an excellent example of late Gothic architecture. Soon you’ll find yourself on a relaxing ride aboard a funicular, ascending above the city to arrive at Heidelberg Castle. A unique residence mixing a range of styles from Gothic to Renaissance, tour the property, first commissioned in the late 14th century but not completed until the 20th century, while taking in impressive views of the city and Neckar River below.
Set out in the golden hour across the Old Bridge and up the Schlangenweg to the Philosopher’s Walk, where one of Heidelberg’s signature views opens over the castle, Old Town, and Neckar. As the light softens and the rooftops begin to glow, the path takes on a quieter evening mood. This is an independent suggestion, and your Destination Expert would be happy to suggest dining options or arrange a dinner reservation to follow.

Begin at Schwetzingen Castle, where artful gardens unfold across a landscape adorned with over 100 sculptures, the serene Temple of Apollo, an Italian-inspired Bath House, and the Turkish Gardens featuring an ornate mosque designed by Nicolas de Pigage. The north wing houses Europe’s first Rococo Theater with galleries, still hosting performances in a timeless setting. Continue to Mannheim Baroque Palace, once envisioned as Europe’s second-largest Baroque palace after Versailles. This monumental palace, reflecting the influence of the Palatine Prince Electors, boasts grand restored interiors, including the elegant ceremonial staircase and Knights’ Hall. Explore the bel-Étage, now home to over 800 exhibits—exquisite tapestries, fine furniture, precious artworks, and priceless silverware.
