Iceland is the ideal destination for an active adventure, and not merely for its astounding scenery and abundance of trails and hills. Perched atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the very landscape here is active and alive: volcanoes and lava flows remake the land, hot geysers burble and spurt everywhere, and glaciers slowly and steadily carve new valleys from the rock.

The adventure begins on a relaxing note near Reykjavík at the Blue Lagoon, a steamy geothermal spa famed for its healing powers and milky-blue waters. Later, explore the world’s most northerly capital on a food-and-culture walking tour with a private guide, then head to Heiðmörk for a private horseback riding experience atop small, powerfully built Icelandic horses. Next, ride an open elevator 400 feet down into the heart of Thrihnukagigur, a dormant volcano. From there, leave Reykjavík behind and head out into the wilderness for Hveragerði via Iceland’s famed Golden Circle where you’ll pass massive geysers, the stunning Gullfoss waterfall, a secluded lagoon, and other sites in Þingvellir National Park before snowmobiling across the huge Langjökull glacier. In Hveragerði, take a bicycle tour of the hot springs that pepper this geothermally active landscape, then explore the fascinating landscapes of Iceland’s South Shore — including waterfalls, glaciers, and black-sand beaches — on a private ATV tour (safety gear and hot chocolate included). ... Day 1: Reykjavik

Meet your private driver-guide and vehicle for an airport transfer. Along the way, your guide will make a stop at the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where you can enjoy the renowned healing properties as you soothe your soul in its mineral waters. A towel rental is included along with your admission. Afterward, for your added comfort, your English-speaking guide will help you with your hotel check-in, and take you through your travel documents.

A welcome package with a city map, train tickets (if relevant), and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful, will be provided to you on your first day in destination.

Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Accommodation: Alda Hotel (B) (Standard )

Situated in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, Alda Hotel (4*) is found on Laugavegur, a premier street in the capital’s vibrant shopping district. Day 2: Reykjavik

For a city so heavily steeped in Viking history, the cityscape of Reykjavik is surprisingly modern. The best way to discover the history and culture of Reykjavik is with a constant thread of food and beverage to lead you around the city. Setting out with a private guide, tastings will be provided for you as you set out on a food-themed walking tour through central Reykjavik, where you'll learn a bit of history, see the city's iconic cathedral, and get a taste of traditional Icelandic food all at once. You'll head to a restaurant located directly across from the stunning mid 20th century Hallgrimskirkja Church - the largest in all of Iceland, where you can spot an impressively intimidating sculpture of Leif Erikson, donated by the United States in recognition of the discovery of the New World by Norse explorers from Iceland. Enjoy some traditional fish stew, smoked char and traditional Icelandic flatbread with smoked lamb as a topping. As you wander the city, you'll be treated to some soup with the catch of the day paired with wine or beer, stop at a pub for some dried cod, and if you're adventurous enough, fermented shark with some cumin schnapps to wash it down. End on a sweet note with a stop for some kleina (Icelandic donuts) or cake before returning to your hotel.

Meet your private driver at your hotel and depart Reykjavik toward the nearby Heidmork Nature Reserve, site of your exciting horseback riding adventure today. Unique to Iceland, Icelandic Horses have been purebred for centuries (since the days of the Vikings), strictly avoiding influence from other horse breeds from around the world. Featuring a stature and gait entirely their own, a ride on these beauties needs to be experienced at least once in a lifetime. You'll be provided with appropriate gear and be paired with your own horse, on which you'll follow your guide on a private ride through beautiful trails into a vast expanse of bushy vegetation along beautiful green hillsides. Look for interesting rock formations in the lava fields while experiencing the horses' special gait, tölt. Ideal for beginners and experienced riders alike, your ride will last approximately 1.5 hours, and will be followed with an included assortment of traditional Icelandic snacks and a warm beverage. Conclude with a private transfer back to Reykjavik.

Day 3: Reykjavik

With a pickup from your hotel, embark on a small group tour today to the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano, a unique natural phenomenon offering the only place on earth where a huge volcanic magma chamber is accessible to humans! Once arriving to a hiking access point outside of Reykjavik, your guide will lead you and a group of up to 16 participants on a moderately challenging 2-mile hike through a hilly, rugged and pitted lava field, lasting 45-60 minutes. The hike is an integral part of the day, not only because of its impressive scenery, but also because it's the only way to reach the volcanic chamber opening aside from arriving by helicopter. After the last 10 minutes ascending the mountain path, you'll arrive to the Thrihnukagigur crater base, from where you'll break into smaller groups for a descent of 400 feet to the bottom of the magma chamber in an open cable lift, exposing a whole new world of subterranean wonder. A true delight for curious minds, you'll spend around 30 minutes on the ground of the volcano exploring and admiring this once-in-a-lifetime environment. Back on the surface, a tasty bowl of traditional Icelandic meat or vegetable soup will be provided along with a hot beverage, while you wait for the other members of your group to experience the chamber floor. Afterward, you'll hike back out to your transportation for a return to Reykjavik.

Day 4: Reykjavik - Hveragerdi

No first trip to Iceland would be complete without experiencing the country’s most famed touring route, the Golden Circle. After check-out, depart Reykjavik on a full-day transfer to Hveragerdi, making stops to visit the three most iconic natural sites Iceland has to offer along the way, in addition to a remarkable snowmobiling excursion and a visit to the Secret Lagoon. Explore the mossy Thingvellir National Park, site of the world’s first ever parliament dating back over 1,000 years, as well as the visible continental divide between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The park offers dramatic scenery and woodland that changes colors throughout the year, making the area a photographer’s delight. You’ll also encounter the magnificent Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most photogenic waterfalls, with water constantly rushing from a river that’s fed by the melting Langjokull glacier. It's this same glacier that you'll get to experience up close as your tour kicks into high gear with a thrilling shared snowmobile excursion onto Langjokull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. Gear will be provided, and you'll ride the machines in pairs, enjoying a unique glacial experience. Bring the pace back down with a soothing visit to the legendary Secret Lagoon, where a dip in the natural geothermal hot springs provides a truly Icelandic experience. The final pillar of the Golden Circle, discover the great Geyser geothermal area where the dependable Strokkur geyser spouts hot water as high as 100 feet in the air, every 6 minutes or so, an entertaining show to say the least. Conclude your day on arrival to Hveragerdi.

Accommodation: Frost & Fire Hotel

Frost and Fire Hotel (3*) is ideally situated in the scenic beauty of Hveragerdi, the hot springs capital of the world. Visible on all sides of the hotel, nature and tranquility offer peace and rest after a long day of adventure. From the 22 rooms, you can look across the river Varma, the hot springs on its banks, and beyond to Mt. Reykjafjall and the valleys above Hveragerdi. Access to the unique and versatile outdoor geothermal spa is included in your stay at Frost and Fire, and appetites can be satisfied at the on-site Varmá restaurant, where “slow food” is served, made with the freshest local ingredients on a seasonal a la carte menu.

Day 5: Hveragerdi

Meet up with a guide and small group of up to 6 participants, gearing up with a helmet and bike to set out and explore Hveragerdi and its outskirts on this half-day biking excursion. Admire the magnificent environment while biking through the grown hills into the new geothermal park where you'll witness a range of hot springs, from small gurgling ones to vibrant, super-heated pools of water and steam. You'll get the opportunity to boil an egg in one of many hot springs and eat some bread that has been baked in a hot spring, as part of an included lunch. After that, you will journey along enjoyable paths beside the river in Hveragerdi, with your guide pointing out fun facts and highlights en route, one of which is the earthquake museum, which you'll stop to visit and discover it's earthquake simulator. In the middle of the tour, you'll be given the chance to jump off a short cliff into a cold river and then warm up in a hot waterfall, or just go straight in the hot waterfall. If the group prefers, you can end the excursion by taking a relaxing bath in the local geothermally-heated swimming pool in Hveragerdi.

Day 6: Hveragerdi

Meet your guide and embark on a private full day tour of Iceland's extraordinary South Shore, renowned for its black sand beaches and waterfalls, where you'll also take part in a thrilling ATV adventure. Over the course of your day, you'll set out along the famed Ring Road to admire the picturesque Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, discover the towering basalt column cliffs near the town of Vik, and admire black sand beaches as far as the eye can see from the elevated Dyrholaey Nature Reserve. At some point you'll detour to Flotshlid to join a shared ATV excursion, where you'll gear up and set out on a 2-3 hour adventure. You'll ride the quad bikes in pairs, and be lead out into perfectly untouched remote wilderness, far from the grasp of civilization. Pause for a moment with your ignition off, away from towns and rushing water, and hear true silence like never before, perhaps even being so lucky to step in a place where no human has ever set foot in the entire history of Iceland. Remote in this country is truly remote. Conclude your day back in Hveragerdi.

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
