Smaller in size than Pennsylvania, Iceland packs a lot into a little. A dynamic and ever-changing landscape — volcanoes and glaciers reshape the topography a little each day — stippled with geysers, waterfalls, cobalt-blue lagoons, and black-sand beaches, this small country at the top of the world often feels like its own planet. And yet it remains an attractive destination, enchanting visitors with its colorful landscape and equally colorful inhabitants, unique history, funky capital, and bottomless charm.

Your adventure begins in Reykjavík, the world’s most northerly capital, with a privately guided tour that will introduce you to its museums, galleries, historic sites, and unique architecture. Next, get a closer appreciation for the volcanic forces that shape Iceland by descending 400 feet into the heart of Thrihnukagigur, an extinct volcano. En route to Budir, explore the majestic landscapes of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, a land of lava fields, black-sand beaches, and mossy hills shaped by centuries of glaciation. Later, find yourself walking inside a glacier, and enjoy the natural treasures of the fabled Golden Circle — including the stunning Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir, and historic Þingvellir National Park. Encounter picturesque waterfalls, black sand beaches, and a mighty glacier on full-day Super Jeep tour. Finally, slip into the impossibly blue waters of the soothing Blue Lagoon near Keflavík before bidding Iceland adieu (until next time, that is.) ... Show More »

Day 1: Reykjavik

Meet your private driver-guide and vehicle for an airport transfer. For your added comfort, your English-speaking guide will help you with your hotel check-in, and take you through your travel documents.

A welcome package with a city map, train tickets (if relevant), and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful, will be provided to you on your first day in destination.

For a city so heavily steeped in Viking history, the cityscape of Reykjavik is surprisingly modern. The best way to discover the history and culture of Reykjavik is with a constant thread of food and beverage to lead you around the city. Setting out with a private guide, tastings will be provided for you as you set out on a food-themed walking tour through central Reykjavik, where you'll learn a bit of history, see the city's iconic cathedral, and get a taste of traditional Icelandic food all at once. You'll head to a restaurant located directly across from the stunning mid 20th century Hallgrimskirkja Church - the largest in all of Iceland, where you can spot an impressively intimidating sculpture of Leif Erikson, donated by the United States in recognition of the discovery of the New World by Norse explorers from Iceland. Enjoy some traditional fish stew, smoked char and traditional Icelandic flatbread with smoked lamb as a topping. As you wander the city, you'll be treated to some soup with the catch of the day paired with wine or beer, stop at a pub for some dried cod, and if you're adventurous enough, fermented shark with some cumin schnapps to wash it down. End on a sweet note with a stop for some kleina (Icelandic donuts) or cake before returning to your hotel.

Accommodation: Borg

Dignified and imposing, Hotel Borg (4*) overlooks the beautiful square of Austurvöllur, in the heart of Reykjavik. The Borg has become one of the Reykjavik’s landmarks, and is conveniently located across from Althingi, the Icelandic parliament and the cathedral. It is also a short walk from a variety of restaurants, businesses, souvenir shops, art galleries and specialty shops. The hotel’s rooms and suites are exquisitely designed with an Art Deco style and feature an extensive array of modern amenities. The on-site restaurant offers exquisite Icelandic cuisine served in beautiful and stylish surroundings, and an adjoining a café and bar.

Day 2: Reykjavik

With a pickup from your hotel, embark on a small group tour today to the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano, a unique natural phenomenon offering the only place on earth where a huge volcanic magma chamber is accessible to humans! Once arriving to a hiking access point outside of Reykjavik, your guide will lead you and a group of up to 16 participants on a moderately challenging 2-mile hike through a hilly, rugged and pitted lava field, lasting 45-60 minutes. The hike is an integral part of the day, not only because of its impressive scenery, but also because it's the only way to reach the volcanic chamber opening aside from arriving by helicopter. After the last 10 minutes ascending the mountain path, you'll arrive to the Thrihnukagigur crater base, from where you'll break into smaller groups for a descent of 400 feet to the bottom of the magma chamber in an open cable lift, exposing a whole new world of subterranean wonder. A true delight for curious minds, you'll spend around 30 minutes on the ground of the volcano exploring and admiring this once-in-a-lifetime environment. Back on the surface, a tasty bowl of traditional Icelandic meat or vegetable soup will be provided along with a hot beverage, while you wait for the other members of your group to experience the chamber floor. Afterward, you'll hike back out to your transportation for a return to Reykjavik.

Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 3: Reykjavik - Husafell

After check-out, meet your private guide and embark on a full day transfer to Husafell, via the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, a stunning area of true natural beauty. One of the westernmost parts of Iceland, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is rich in fascinating landscapes from dramatic volcanic peaks and crunchy lava flows, to sparkling fjords, sheer sea cliffs, and sweeping golden beaches. Departing Reykjavik, you'll head north along the famed Ring Road before setting out west on the Peninsula's main route. Over the course of your day you'll discover the romantic little fishing villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar on the south coast of the peninsula, both famous for their characteristic rock formations in the shapes of arches and sea stacks, along with an array of caves, and cliffs brought to life by massive colonies of birds. Continue your journey around the Snaefellsjokull National Park, home to the glistening Snaefellsjokull glacier-capped stratovolcano, immortalized in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, and onward through the small fishing villages and historic trading ports on the northern shores of the peninsula. Conclude your day on arrival to Husafell.

Accommodation: Hotel Husafell

Hotel Husafell (4*) is located in an area rich in history and extraordinary natural wonders. The hotel combines the comfort of a luxurious hotel with the spirit of exploration, while being proudly sustainable, using only 100% pure energy produced on-site. The 48 contemporary guestrooms are designed to be in harmony with the surrounding nature, offering breathtaking views, and decorated with paintings from Husafell’s world-renowned artist Páll Guðmundsson. Guests of Hotel Husafell receive free admission to its geothermal baths, for a relaxing float in wonderfully hot, fresh water, providing deep and nourishing relaxation. The hotel’s on-site restaurant offers seasonal menus where Icelandic ingredients are able to flourish in international cuisine.

Day 4: Husafell

Meet your private driver-guide and set out on a full day tour in a specially-modified Super Jeep, beginning with a drive to Iceland's second-largest ice cap, the Langjokull glacier. High up in a remote area of the ice-capped glacier you'll get to explore the vast, man-made ice tunnel known as Ice Cave Iceland. There are no private entries, so you'll enter as a group to explore this intriguing attraction. It's not quite a Jules Verne journey to the center of the earth, but it certainly feels otherworldly as you venture deep into the glacier to reveal a world of stunning blue ice. Afterward, continue privately to Western Iceland's fjord, Borgarfjordur, for some majestic scenery. You'll get to view the magical Hraunfossar waterfall pouring through the lava field into the Hvita River, and the scenic cascades of Barnafoss. Continue to the romantic and historic Reykholt, home of Iceland’s great saga writer, Snorri Sturluson, then return to Husafell via the steamy Deildartunguhver, the most powerful geothermal spring in all of Europe.

Day 5: Husafell - Selfoss

No first trip to Iceland would be complete without experiencing the country’s most famed touring route, the Golden Circle. After check-out, depart Husafell on a full-day transfer to Selfoss, making stops at the three most iconic and picturesque natural sites Iceland has to offer along the way. Explore the mossy Thingvellir National Park, site of the world’s first ever parliament dating back over 1,000 years, as well as the continental divide between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, a unique geological feature only on display in Iceland. The park offers dramatic scenery and woodland that changes colors throughout the year, making the area a photographer’s delight. Afterward, you'll be treated to a lunch experience at the Fridheimar Farm Greenhouse where you'll take part in a small group greenhouse tour and enjoy a meal among the tomato plants. Continue along the Golden Circle to discover the great Geyser geothermal area, where the dependable Strokkur geyser spouts hot water as high as 100 feet in the air, every 6 minutes or so. The final pillar of the Golden Circle, encounter the magnificent Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most photogenic waterfalls, with water constantly rushing from a river that’s fed by the melting Langjokull glacier. After, find relaxation at legendary Secret Lagoon, offering a true Icelandic experience with a dip in natural geothermal hotsprings with steam rising into the air around you. Conclude your day on arrival to Selfoss.

Accommodation: Hotel Grimsborgir (B) (Superior)

Hotel Grimsborgir (4*) is located in South Iceland near Selfoss, directly along the famous Golden Circle tourism route. The hotel is surrounded by picturesque landscapes of peace and tranquility, and prides itself on its friendly, first class service. Hotel Grimsborgir consists of several different houses with guestrooms, which are well-appointed and spacious, featuring modern amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. Soothe your bones in the hot tub at the end of a long day, or perhaps dine at the on-site restaurant, offering a delicious and broad a la carte menu of both Icelandic and international dishes.

Day 6: Selfoss

Fantastic tour that met all our special requests! Our anniversary celebration was perfect! Our grandchildren made so many memories from playing in the fields of the farm to sailing through the fjords and eating desserts at all the bakeries! A marvellous intergenerational experience!

  • Julie S — July 05, 2019 — Europe

Thank you to Daniel for making our family’s trip to Greece so enjoyable and memorable. We asked him for an “Instagram” worthy trip, and he delivered! The hotels on the islands were stunning, and our private tour guides at each stop easily accommodated our individual wishes. Our trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.

  • Elizabeth B — July 20, 2019 — Europe

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with your services. Everything from the drivers to the hotels to guides was five stars! We never had to wait in line and were treated like royalty. I highly recommend the private boat ride/tour to Capri. It was fabulous! We had never been to Italy and left feeling like we learned so much. We fell in love with the people and culture. We cannot wait to have Kensington book our next adventure.

  • Kimberly E — July 14, 2019 — Europe

It was the first time we have used a company of this nature to manage our bookings. Most often I book my rooms, and tours, but after this experience, I would definetely use Kensington again for a trip of this type. Our Destination truly supported us and allowed us to make changes until the plan was just perfect for us. This truly showed when we were in country and everthing went off perfectly. I was worried to have other book items on my families behalf seeing as we were traveling with kids (age 8 and 10), but I feel our destination Expert did take that into account and it was perfect.

There is so much to say about this amazing family trip to northern Spain we just came home from, but in short, the trip was even more than we could have hoped for - From the planning to the tour guides, drivers and accommodations our needs were met and in most cases surpassed. There is no way the trip could have been as successful without the help of Maryanne from Kensington Tours and her team.

  • Sara L — June 29, 2019 — Europe

Our Iceland trip was fantastic. From planning with Melissa (many times over until we had it right) to being greeted in Iceland and all of the wonderful tours we took, we had a fabulous time. Our guide, Sigga, was excellent. She guided us, told us tales of Iceland, was extremely accommodating with my elderly mom. We enjoyed being with her very much. Inke, our guide to the glacier, was also wonderful. We had a great time and felt Kensington did a fabulous job. Thanks!

  • Dawn K — July 18, 2019 — Europe

The trip overall was amazing and all the activities and travel plans went so very smoothly. Our whole familiy really enjoyed every day of the trip. Patrick McCallion, the expert from your agency who helped us, was awesome! He not only set up everything perfectly for us but helped us with reservations for dinners at fine dining places and answered many questions we had in advance. We did leave our glasses in the van at one point in Barcelona and had to contact the local agent who quickly retrieved the glasses for us without any problem. We highly recommend this agency given the quality of the experience, the smoothness of the itinerary, and the flexibility to tailored the experience to our needs. Thank

This was our 6th Kensington tour. We have gone as a couple on trips and taken our children sometimes to destinations all over the world. We have never been disappointed and have had the most personal and professional service. We would not even consider using anyone else. Thank you Alania for everything! Our most recent trip to Russia and Scandinavia was fabulous and perfectly planned!
