A Journey Back in Time
Bellinzona sits at a strategic gateway between Switzerland and Italy, a key trading point in Medieval times and fortified as far back as the 1st century BC during the Roman era. With your private driver, set out from Lugano and drive through the foothills of the Alps to Bellinzona, a the town boasting a rich medieval heritage. Bellinzona appeared to the traveler of old approaching from the South as the key to the Alps while for those approaching it from the North, it was the gateway to Italy. A group of fortified walls and three Medieval castles tower over the town. Spend the day exploring the UNESCO listed walls and the castles of Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, before discovering the charming town of which the citadels watch over. The mild temperatures south of the Alps are a warm welcome, and the town is home to a bustling market, open-air concerts, and outdoor restaurants sampling the local Canton of Ticino specialties. The town has a distinctive ItalianitÀ – or Italian-ness – unlike the rest of Switzerland, as part of the only Canton where Italian is the sole official language. End the day with a return journey back to Lugano. Please note: Sasso Corbaro and Montebello are closed during the winter months, while Castelgrande remains open year-round.
