The Oje Trail is the perfect introduction to the Amazon’s breathtaking biodiversity. Just over a mile in length, the trail is frequented by guests of lodge, making it one of the easier paths to traverse. Following along the riverside and through seasonally flooded forests, the trail starts at the far side of the lodge’s property through an area featuring kapok trees, strangler figs, catahuya, and oje trees that are home to an incredible range of birds. In the company of a resident guide, head out on this well-marked trail and discover a small sample of what the Amazon has to offer in the coming days. In the late afternoon, head out on a guided boat ride to witness the enchanting transition from day to night as animals of the day time are replaced by nocturnal creatures. Learn about this environment and the many animals the stalk through the night including owls, nightjars, capybaras and caimans. On clear nights, the stars of the southern hemisphere dazzle.

Wake up late or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30am for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest, and is served until 9:30am. This morning, visit Lake Sandoval into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. After a morning paddling through this exotic land, you will return to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, march along the remarkable Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. After ascending the first tower, 95 feet above the forest ground, begin this journey through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. During this 90 minute expedition, be on the lookout for colorful toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and sloths. If you wish you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. Back at the lodge, simply relax or perhaps head to the Eco Center to catch the evening’s presentation.

A 25 minute boat ride from the lodge, Gamitana Creek is a dark-water stream that is home to piranhas, caimans, turtles and a wide range of birds. Explore this unfettered land with your Inkaterra guide and learn about the many animals and plants that depend on one another to survive.
