In one sense, Bolivia is a land of otherworldly landscapes and indescribably beautiful natural spaces. In another, it’s home to centuries-old mountaintop cities built on diverse cultures and history by turns turbulent and fascinating. This tour unites both elements into a captivating whole.

It starts high in the clouds in La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital. After taking some time to adjust to the altitude (11,942 feet (3,640 meters) above sea level), you’ll set out with a private guide to tour the city’s famous Mercado de los Brujos (Witches' Market), hike through the lunar landscapes of the Valley of the Moon, and explore the ruins of Tiwanaku, a mysterious city built by an advanced pre-Inca civilization.

From La Paz, the scene shifts southeast to Sucre, the whitewashed colonial capital. Here, you’ll visit the Casa de la Libertad (House of Liberty), the Museum of Indigenous Art ASUR, and a pair of impressive churches before taking a stroll through historic Parque Simón Bolívar en route to the scenic La Recoleta viewpoint and a thrilling cultural performance over dinner.

Next stop: the famed salt flats of Salar de Uyuni. A must-do on any trip to Bolivia, you’ll spend four days exploring the region and taking in the unbelievably beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the company of a private guide. The landscape here changes depending on the season, but the beauty of Uyuni’s many sights – including Isla Incahuasi, a rocky cactus-lined island in the center of the flats; the fascinating train cemetery; the picturesque Valley of Rocks; and the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve, home of the Árbol de Piedra (“Stone Tree”) rock formation. ... Isolated, beautiful, and home to all kinds of transcendent experiences, Bolivia earns its “the Tibet of the Americas” nickname. After one visit, you’ll call it “the place you can’t wait to visit again.”

Day 1: La Paz

A valid passport is required for all American, Canadian or British citizens, including children, intending to visit Bolivia. It is recommended that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your expected departure from the country. There have been cases where citizens were refused entry for not having the six-month validity. In addition, all Americans are required to have a valid Bolivian Visa prior to their arrival in Bolivia, otherwise, they will be refused entry into the country.

Upon arrival to La Paz International Airport, you will be greeted outside of Customs by an English-speaking guide holding a sign with your name on it. This guide will direct you to your awaiting driver and accompany to your first hotel to assist with check-in and answer any questions that you may have.

Day 2: La Paz

At 11,942 feet (3,640 meters) above sea level, La Paz is the world’s most highly elevated world capital, and this altitude can negatively affect guests who are not properly acclimatized. This morning, take the time to allow your body to adjust to the change in environment, enjoying a light breakfast with coffee and juice at a slow pace. Before long, your body will adapt to the mountain atmosphere, at which time the adventure can truly begin.

The famous Witches Market of La Paz, locally known as Mercado de los Brujos, is host to all kinds of rare handicrafts and trinkets - as well as tinctures and oils that allege to assist in search for wealth or to help identify infidelity - and you’ll discover this firsthand today alongside your private guide. Later, visit the colonial Church of San Francisco, and vibrant Sagarnaga Street, another popular place to find well-made charms. You'll also visit Murillo Square where the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Government Palace and Parliament buildings are located, learning about the city's political past along the way, before arriving at the ever-popular Jaen Street, a colonial neighborhood where a number of interesting museums are clustered, including a replica of the semi-subterranean temple of Tiwanaku culture. After touring La Paz, the scene shifts to the outskirts of the city, where an astonishing formation has taken shape over the millennia. Known as the Moon Valley, this all-but-lunar region is host to a mountain composed mainly of clay (as opposed to rock), which has eroded in a unique way, leaving a cascade of spires stretching across the valley. After Making completing the 30-minute drive to reach the valley, set out with your guide as they lead the way on a brief hike to explore the region at your own pace. When the time is right, visit a small ceramic workshop where you’ll learn about pottery in Bolivia and also have the chance to purchase a keepsake if you so choose. After a day exploring La Paz and the Moon Valley, you will be returned to your hotel.

Day 3: La Paz

Strike out to visit the city of Tiwanaku, capital of an ancient civilization by the same name. Located roughly 45 miles outside the city of La Paz and near the south-eastern shores of Lake Titicaca, Tiwanaku was once the largest settlement in the Latin world and is considered to be the birthplace of all American civilizations. This pre-Columbian ruin has sparked countless and seemingly endless archeological debates. The most recent radiocarbon tests show that this edification dates back to 1580 B.C, though others have contested the results. In this ancient and breathtaking city, visit the Kalasasaya Temple (Sun Temple) and the semi-subterranean Akapana Pyramid (Earth Pyramid). The tour also includes a visit to an impressive museum filled with ancient objects and tools that stand as proof of just how advanced this civilization really was. Lunch, as well as round-trip transfers, are included.

Ali Pacha – which translates to Universe of Plants – prepares signature cuisine based on vegetable products, establishing itself a benchmark for haute cuisine in the city of La Paz since opening in 2016. Ali Pacha is focused on strengthening the link between gastronomy and the conscience of diners, encouraging all to understand that food is part of an extensive chain that involves many actors, all with an important role in ensuring the sustainability of the planet. Tonight, reservations will be made in advance at Ali Pacha Restaurant, allowing you to enjoy what is widely considered to be the best vegan cuisine in all of South America. Please note: Your meal is not included and will be paid for on location. Reservations are confirmed at the time of booking and are subject to availability.

Day 5: Sucre - Colchani

With rich colonial architecture and a tragic history as a mining town, Potosi has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the history of which you’ll discover in intimate detail through the help of your guide. Visit San Lorenzo Church to appreciate its beautiful façade, tour Casa de la Moneda – the national mint of Bolivia – the exterior of the Tower of Company, the exterior of the Arch of Cobija and wrap-up the experience with a trip to the artisan’s market in the colonial area of the city where you can peruse and purchase local handicrafts. Day 6: Colchani

A quintessential highlight of any trip to Bolivia are the salt flats found in and around Salar de Uyuni. Mesmerizing and spectacular year-round, from April to November (the annual dry season) the salt flats – cracked in a mosaic of dry-mud tiles – gives the opportunity to play with perspective, while from December to March, the salt flats are sheeted in water, becoming a gigantic reflective mirror where the sky is paralleled on the flats below. The scenery is a paradise for photography lovers due to the incredible optical effects no matter the time of year. Continuing onward, you will then visit Incahuasi Island which is located in the heart of the salt flat. The largest of a group of islands in this isolated ecosystem, Incahuasi is populated with giant cacti species that measures up to 26 feet in height; an other-worldly sight in this seemingly-lunar landscape. Following your time on the salt flats, you will be delivered to your hotel in Colchani. Please note: Incahuasi Island is inaccessible during the wet season, or when rains flood the flats. Rest assured, the scenery is still spectacular.

Day 7: Colchani - Ojo de Perdiz

Begin your day in the salt flats of Bolivia with a trip to the Train Cemetery found in the middle of the desert. Here hulking relics from a bygone area rest like fossilized creatures in the otherwise empty land. Afterward, visit the magical villages of Sud Lípez and San Cristobal, two sleepy towns found in the southern section of the flats where you'll get a feel for local life in this remote corner of the world. Your next stop is the Rock Valley, where a group of large red rocks are found. Here you’ll break for a refreshing picnic lunch in the countryside before returning to your vehicle to continue onward to your hotel in the region of Ojo de Perdiz.

Accommodation: Tayka del Desierto

Tayka del Desierto, Spanish for Hotel of the Deserts, is located 40 minutes from the Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada), amidst the beautiful scenery of the high Andean desert landscape. This site is accessible from Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia and San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. The hotel provides hot water, private bathrooms, heating, breakfast, bar and restaurant, and comfortable beds with feather duvets.

Day 8: Ojo de Perdiz - Salar de Uyuni - La Paz

Depart from your hotel at dawn today to begin a day of exploration in Ojo de Perdiz. Your first stop of the day is to the Stone Tree, silent testimony of the erosion of the earth and the passage of the years, which is found in the Siloli Desert, a flatland without vegetation. Just beyond the desert, you’ll find the Reserve Eduardo Abaroa, home of the Red Lagoon. An amazing example of a bio-diversity in a totally desolate region, it is a fascinating testament to the power of adaptability. Continuing onward, visit to the geyser Sol de Mañana (or Morning Sun), so named because it is typically active only in the morning. Next, discover the hot springs of Polques, heated by volcanic activity underground throughout the region. Stop for a picnic lunch when the time is right, then explore the Green Lagoon, unique for the active microorganisms that give color to the water. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped of at Salar de Uyuni Airport to catch your onward flight to La Paz.

  • Patricia M — May 24, 2019 — South America

Overall, we were very pleased with the entire experience. Our guides were excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We were also amazed as to how well planned the entire trip was and the support we received throughout. For example, the support we received when our flight was delayed was welcomed and greatly appreciated.

  • Lyle I — March 18, 2019 — South America

Brandi went above and beyond our expectations. This was a bucket list trip for us and it was fabulous. Renee, in Peru, was incredibly attentive and caring. Mariela Zamora was an excellent guide and gave us 110% service. We are very impressed with Kensington and all of their people.

  • Robert S — June 11, 2019 — South America

This was the second of what will soon be 3 tours with Kensington. The 1st 2 included 17 people. There is absolutely no aspect of the trips that I can find fault with. All the details were carefully dealt with. All of the people from the office to those "on the ground" were professional and pleasant.

  • Lynn N — February 27, 2019 — South America

Every aspect of our trip to the Galápagos Islands was perfect. Scalesia Lodge and Finch Bay Hotel were both incredible, our excursions were wonderful, our guides were knowledgeable, and our itinerary was planned and executed effortlessly. Best last minute addition: booking a room at the W at the airport in Quito so that we had a comfortable place to nap and relax during our 6-hour layover (especially since our flight back to the States did not depart until 12:45 am).

  • Shelley R — March 24, 2019 — South America

Kensington Tours planned our trip to Patagonia when we went to visit our daughter in Buenos Aries. Everything worked like clockwork. Flights, transfers and excursions were all well planned with excellent companies and were stress-free. The excursions were varied, and the guides were excellent. Hotels were top notch and very comfortable. This is the second time I have used Kensington to plan a vacation, and they really make it easy. I gave them the places we wanted to visit and our interests and they took it from there. I highly recommend Kensington Tours!

  • Carmen S. — January 20, 2019 — South America

Thanks to Kensington Tours we had a fabulous, stress free vacation. The Kensington team (Barbara and Jenny) were extremely helpful in helping us decide on sites to visit and planning our airfares connections and always there to timely answer any questions we had. The guides and drivers were always prompt, knowledgeable and accommodating to our needs and we couldn’t asked for a better trip!

  • Gabriele M. — January 10, 2019 — South America

We had a great time on our trip to Argentina and Chile. The guides were great.

  • Melvin S. — January 31, 2019 — South America

We enjoyed the experience very much. Our guides in Bogota (Sebastian) and Medellin (Maria) were excellent and very appropriate for those experiences and are highly recommended.

  • Caryl M. — January 07, 2019 — South America

Sarah Roberts was a joy to work with. She was helpful, responsive and always had a positive can-do attitude. Just fantastic.

  • Ann V. — November 16, 2018 — South America

It was a trip of a lifetime. Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks so much for all your guidance and help.
